How do you rank a gas station? Lowell Market is way above and beyond your usual rural stop and…read moreshop, so I'm giving it five stars. They have pretty much all the necessities, including beer and wine. It's the fried chicken that locals come for, however. I finally got to try it recently, and it lives up to the hype. It's neither greasy nor dry, but right in the middle. Not too battered, either. I had it with a cup of beans and cornbread. Both were good. The beans DO have pork in them, so no go for vegetarians and vegans. Particularly good with hot sauce, which is at every table in the small seating area (that also has counter seating). Son was excited to see they carry Faygo, and he bought a case. Stop in if you are in the area!

The lady behind the counter was awesome, friendly and made my daughter's day letting her have a donut hole while I ordered literally 1 of each flavor for a dozen. You can tell they make everything from scratch because the donuts were delicious, especially the crème filled ones. The prices are crazy, we pay twice as much for a dozen donuts in Louisville. I'm glad we stopped and next year when we will absolutely go back.

Omelet Shoppe - A Little Slice of Road-Trip Americana…read more There isn't much in Beckley when it comes to very early breakfast before hiking New River Gorge NP, so we picked Omelet Shoppe mostly because it was a few blocks from the hotel and, honestly, how wrong can you go with eggs and bacon? Turns out: wonderfully right. This diner is pure road-trip gold, the kind of place where time slows down just enough for the coffee to taste better. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, greeting locals with hugs, warm questions about their families, and the kind of genuine familiarity that makes you wonder if you've accidentally walked into a reunion. And somehow, they made us feel like we were long-lost regulars too. It was all very wholesome and slightly magical. The food was simple, satisfying, exactly what breakfast should be when you're about to climb, wander, and sweat your way through a national park. So good, in fact, that we came back every single morning. Because why mess with perfection? A true little gem, comforting, unpretentious, and warm in all the right ways.

Pros Quanity- My omelet, home fries, toast, and coffee were about $13, so very affordable for some greasy spoon- type breakfast. Cons Service- Our service was spotty, and not the warmest, but can be understandable. Taste- I may have gotten the wrong thing, but overall there wasn't a whole lot of flavor (until I added hot sauce...that helped). Speed- Came in about 8:30, and it was 1/4- 1/2 full, but still took about 35 minutes to get our food after ordering. Not the slowest, but could have been better. Overall could have been a worse experience, and if you are wanting some quick, simple, Waffle House- style food, this is a good place to check out!
