This was my third time surfing. I first learned how to surf in Lima, but I realized that surfing in Lima and surfing in San Sebastián are very different. Since I had such a great experience learning in Lima, I figured I could benefit from a lesson or two in San Sebastián, where the beach was better, but catching waves was not.
I was satisfied with the services offered at the surf shop, but the instruction itself was... disappointing at best. Maybe the instructor was having an off-day, but he could at least have informed me that the waves and the surf-zones were constantly in a state of flux -- the poles denoting the swimming versus surfing zones literally changed from one minute to the next, in some of the most dramatic instances. This was something that was wildly different than my previous experience, and it would have been helpful to know in advance. This one only *one* of the things I took offense at, but it was the most glaring deficiency. Maybe he just expected me to know beforehand; but again, this was crazy different from my first surfing experience, which was in Lima.
Final rating: 5 out of 10 stars. Go for the rentals, but be wary of the quality of instruction. read more
