Anyone tried replacing a car key lately? Omg, the days of looking up a physical place and going there and getting a key are almost kaput. A quick search revealed about 10-20 places, the problem being that none of them are local or have a physical location. They all seemed to be operators who assign you to some unknown local person who can come out to you and replace the key. That seemed problematic - giving my address to strangers I can't trace back to a particular business. Add to that, there prices were double what I paid here : Here it was $75 to get a key w a chip replaced for a late 2000s foreign car. I'm so glad I could support an actual local business, reputable and with a physical location. The key was ready in no less than 30 minutes, they had me check it and then shaved it down a little more. Very transparent and I got the same info on the phone and in person. I'm telling all my friends about this place for when they need keys. read more

Stopped in to get an extra house key made, Brian greeted me right away and was super helpful with picking out a key (I wanted one with a design as this was for a friend that would be taking care of my animals while I'm gone, so it's OBVIOUSLY my key). Came to Krause Key & Lock to have two extra keys made and two Kwikset cylinders re-keyed. They can get keys made right away, probably only took them 3 mins to make two key copies for me. If it's a common key like the Kwikset key I had, they charged $2.25 per key not including tax. I brought in two cylinders to get re-keyed. This takes a bit longer. If they are busy, you should probably just drop the cylinders off to get re-keyed. Fortunately for me, they were able to get to me right away so I just waited. I waited for about 10 mins for them to re-key the two cylinders. (Make sure to bring your working key for the cylinders, it'll make the employees and your life a whole lot easier.) They charged $7.50 per cylinder not including tax. Checkout took a little longer because they actually write out your order on a sheet of paper, calculate the tax, and total all the items with tax on a calculator. But that didn't bother me, I like the old school process. The employees were friendly and efficient. I'll definitely be coming back with any locksmith needs. read more

Krause Key was my 4th try to have some keys made for my 2016 Isuzu NPR truck. My local lock service in ESTL, an ACE Hardware in Chesterfield, and even the dealership where I bought the truck brand new were not able to make the key. I know, crazy. I was in the neighborhood anyway so I stopped in just on a whim. They had the blanks, cut two keys for me, and when I tried the keys the following day they worked! About five years ago when I lived in St. Louis Hills I had Krause work on my front door lock once. Both times I have been very happy with their knowledge and service! I finally have extra truck keys! I have NO IDEA why anyone in St. Louis goes anywhere else for keys/locks. This place has consistently delivered fast, friendly, competent service. I locked myself out of my house (1 pm on a Monday) and after a failed attempt to get my spare key from my friend's house I called Krause. I have noticed the store as I drive up and down Hampton. They were very pleasant on the phone and the man took my name and number to call me back with an estimated time of arrival. He called back a minute later and said someone was on the way. The locksmith arrived in a Krause van within five minutes. It didn't take him long to get my door open; he then asked me to verify it was in fact my house (by providing him with my key inside) and made me a spare key on site. They were prompt and professional and I felt very comfortable with the cost. I was having several issues with the older Mortise lock on the home I just purchased. They came out within a week (I had no rush) and took the lock, cleaned and re-keyed it and had it back in my door and working within an hour! It was amazing. I would hesitate to recommend this lock service. The bill ended up to be a lot more than I expected based on their misleading quote and the guy they sent was in a hurry and seemed like I was an inconvenience. I'm not sure why a 2 hours of work and $200 is such an inconvenience. On the day I met them I just happened to forget my keys and the guy didn't want to take the time to pick the lock (or he just didn't have skills). I then went back to work to get the keys. Then, everything I asked him to do (which is what I told them on the phone) he huffed and puffed and looked at his watch. In the end I didn't even have them do everything and I'll have to find someone else. I should have just hired Al Gore to put in the lockbox.
