The commercials are not too long; either that or they just have long streams of music. It sure beats hearing the same song on the radio before and after you drive to and from work, respectively. I mean, if you like Justin Timberlake's, "My Love," then keep it locked on KMEL, you'll hear it at least three times in a day! For me, KRTY is a good flip-to station, because when other stations get repetitive, I FLIP-TO KRTY! Disclaimer: you must first like country music! And for you haters, country music is not bad at all. I have no idea from where that youthful prejudice has arisen. (I seriously thought it was uncool to listen to country when I was a teen. Went by to pick up some tickets won after being caller number 5 and nearly could not find the place because it seriously doesn't look like a place of business. Then after finding the place we were unsure they were even open. The studio and office is on the second floor of this old building that has exterior stair cases. We walked up and looked in some windows. All were dark (it was a Sunday afternoon) except for the actual studio. The DJ had the window cracked and we could see he was talking live on the air with his headphones on. We waited a bit and listened. it was pretty neat. He was a cool laid back guy (wouldn't expect any less of a K*PIG DJ though!). Got our tickets and met a radio personality. Seriously tho the offices totally matches the personality of the station. Random, unique, a little rough around the edges, but quirky cool!

I only visit Santa Cruz twice a year, max, but I've actually listened to KZSC 88.1 more on my…read moredrives down the 101 near the towns of Gonzales and Soledad than I have when driving around Monterey Bay. Normally at that point of the drive, it's early afternoon on Saturday or Sunday, so I often hear the same DJs or at least the same shows that have been hosted by different DJs--college students, I assume. The music can be good, bad, or totally random, especially how the songs are juxtaposed. That's the beauty of true college radio, and I don't begrudge them their poor taste or lack of knowledge of seminal bands from the '80s and '90s--and yes, I know that they were born in the 2000s, but I was born in the late '70s and I still knew from a young age who Elvis, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and many of the Motown artists were. What does bother me about this station--and something ugly about true college radio--is how much dead air there is. It's not just too much time between songs or occasionally hearing hot-mic incidents; it's a more regular thing, and I've heard the same DJs apologize for the same issue over and over. Again, I get it that these are (mostly) college kids who are learning a skill, but they should be better, which leads me to believe there's very little to no engineering help for the DJs. There's also too much advertising, but I can't single KZSC out for that, and some of the hyper-local ads are funny. I'm glad it's my audio companion for at least part of my regular trips to SoCal, but it could be better. And they need more shows devoted to music.

It's a really nice balance is of leading nationally-distributed public radio programs such as NPR's Morning Edition, PRI's This American Life, and Pacifica Radio's Democracy Now. When looking for a photo, I found some fun-facts about KUSP online: * It's non-profit community radio station serving listeners in Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Benito, and South Santa Clara counties. * Now in its 37th year of operation, KUSP serves 40,000 listeners per week with a distinctive mix of news/information, music and cultural programming. * KUSP's volunteer programmers produce seventy percent of KUSP's schedule. My issue with this rag is it delivers thousands of unwanted copies without permission. This…read moreegregious act pollutes our environment in so many ways. First, paper in landfills does not degrade well. 2nd would be all the resources wasted printing something that is not read or used. 3rd would be the use of their "delivery" numbers to infulence advertisers to purchase ads. And lastly is the frustration of having to throw 2 copies away every time they are delivered. I do not read this paper ever. It goes straight to the bin, hopefully to be recycled, but probably not due to ink and paper used. Bulk mailing is such an issue that my local post office took out all their recycling bins, as they would overflow everyday. Bulk mailing was never intended to provide "free" subscribers to a paper to bulk up their distribution numbers. It is a deplorabel waste of resources, time and energy.

I do not recommend the Press Banner - this was my experience with them regarding a name change…read morepublication. I contacted the Banner to have my name change published and gave them all required credit card and documental information. Two weeks later, I discoverd that my credit card had not been charged and that the Banner had never run my time sensitive publication. I contacted the Banner and was informed that my name change would publish in time for my court date which was now 4 weeks away. I was also ensured that a hard copy of the newspaper with the add publication would be mailed to my home address for my reference. The hard copy was never mailed my way, the Banner never sent Proof of Publication to the court house by my court date, a copy of the Proof of Publication was never emailed to me before my court date, my phone calls were never returned. I had no way of knowing if my name had actually been published. I traveled to Scotts Valley to locate a copy of the paper and discovered, at that point, that they had indeed published my name change. I followed up with the Banner after my court date had passed to discuss my experience with having a name change published with their paper. I was told they were a small paper, but could refund me partially and resend a copy of the Proof of Publication email my way. The woman in charge of running the name change publication, ensured that it had been sent my way on time and acknowledged that she had listened to my messages, specifically remembering me as the woman "freaking out". I never did receive that refund or the Proof of Publication email. Skip this experience, take your business to another paper. To add, I just received an $80 bill from the Press Banner in the mail. They were paid in full last month before the publication went out. I had to send a copy of my credit card statement and emails proving I paid in full to their accounting department. I couldn't be more dissatisfied with their lack of attention throughout this entire process.
