I got to attend the KQED FEST of 2026. It was my first time visiting the headquarters, and the space was just dopamine inducing: open space, walls of windows, areas that just scream community cultivation. There is so much to do at KQED Fest, and this is a FREE event! There was a variety of spaces designed especially for creative kids: painting, playing, looking under microscopes. There were also a good offering for the adults: panels, presentations by NPR, and auditions for Check Please, Bay Area! And if none of that sounds interesting than feel free to take your pick of tours, a stage with local live music (by such greats as: Tiny Desk Concert winner Ruby Ibarra or the 2024 KQED Bay Area Showcase winner Misa James), bingo, and lots of great food and drinks. Of course, I grabbed a little KQED swag as a physical souvenir of the day. I'm hoping (make that manifesting) I'll attend a live taping of any of the wonderful shows filmed right there at the headquarters. Thank you for opening up this incredible space for the public to visit. Attending KQED Fest fulfilled a dream long in the making for me.

When I used to live near Albertsons (now Lucky) there used to be this guy who would sell old records across the street. Amazing collectible stuff. I scored countless Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, and other great records from him. Alot of times I would buy the records just for the record art. But after scoring some choice soundtracks, I knew I had to finally listen to my gems. After buying about close to 80 records, I figured it was time to buy a record player. So I went on craigslist and found a beautiful wooden record player console. It was and continues to be gorgeous. One of my favorite things in the world (outside of....) Nothing can really replicate the sound of slow turning vinyl. Nothing. Ipods can't do Janis Joplin justice, the way a record player can capture the rasp and angst of her voice. The great thing about this particular record player is that it also has a radio. A radio with taste. It's picky and only gets the quality stations - many of which happen to play alot of old school jams (old school is relative I guess...) One of them is Kiss 98.1. My record player radio adores 98.1. It beams as Whitney Houston, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Smoky Robinson, Prince, classic Santana, 90's Usher, and more greats (Usher's 90's stuff puts usher in this category) croon out of it's fabric covered speakers. Curled up onto my bed, I let 98.1 guide me. Last night, I pulled out all of my art supplies and began painting on an old pair of white leather funky boots, that I had bought the other day from a sidewalk sale. Once they're completed, I'm posting pictures and dedicating them to 98.1. As a tribute, to a station that continues to spread classic funk, R&B, and soul. Croon on.............

An interesting sidenote is that Tony Sandoval, who sounds like a slick used car salesman, used to be a DJ in 98.1 FM's previous incarnation, KISS. Between him, Delilah, the Morning Breeze&Lisa St. Regis, expect the bland. While they tout that they're "less stressful" music for work, they're more likely to cure insomnia. Since they play the same songs endlessly, one is capable of doing karaoke, because you can practice the words. 99.3 The Vine out of Napa has more variety, along with local news&events, and 99.7 FM has new music, and the comedy of Fernando and Greg. If you've drank too much caffeine, the Breeze is a powerful antidote. I want to know what love is, I want you to show me. My heart will go on.

Gone are the days of The Ramones, Siouxie and the Banshees, The Smiths, Oingo Boingo, The The, INXS, The Divinals, UB40, Book Of Love, The Smashing Pumpkins, and so many more artists to mention. Steve Masters was the DJ, my favorite, nowadays he reviews Video Games or something related. There was a morning show. It was classified as "New Wave" but then it changed to "Modern Rock." I still have the logo keychain and I remember the bumper stickers that I slapped on my Toyota rubber bumper. I heard 1990s alternative and today's alternative music. There was no edge to it. It's disappointing.

Even when it turned into this Bollywood station I would still listen to it from time to time. I got a kick out of the advertisements - always the same ones - I remember this realtor speaking highly of herself - shameless promotion in her heavy accent while speaking English. So one day I'm minding my own business shuffling through all the stations frantically and I recognize NoNames voice. I couldn't believe it. No more Bollywood for me. Turns out they were on a yoga retreat. He said so himself. Right when the station returned they had the 1800 number to call in with your opinions during every ad session. Listening to it again was almost like getting in a time machine and going back ten years. I even felt ten years younger again in an instant. Who knew? Potions and lotions and botox had nothing on listening to this station. They recycled the same 15 songs and played them on a loop just like they always had. It was so familiar - very soothing. At the same time it was very very terrible - not like a train derailment - but maybe like a child scribbling some ugly piece of art. Bad but in a good way. One star for NoName. Love the guy. I remember when I met him. He looks just as you would imagine him to look from knowing his voice only. I got some concert tickets from him for knowing some band trivia questions on air. One star for Aaron Axelsen. Sound check is probably one of the only good reasons to listen. Sunday evenings from 8 - 10. New stuff. Interesting stuff. Local stuff. Its not better than Barbara Streissand but its different. All these years had passed. My Jetta now officially slowly slipped into heapdoom status. Saggy headliner, engine light, a knock here and there in the suspension and a big dent on the drivers door from when I had to take Mr Moose to the emergency room and time was of the essence. Engine still runs so smooth but the interior stinks. I'm not sure if Mr Moose did something in there or maybe the a/c evaporator core drain is clogged. It stinks and I don't think I'm going to fix it for it to pass its next smog check. I'm either going to spritz some freshner in it and dump it on CL or donate it to my favorite Cantonese radio station in San Jose. They gave me a shen yun calendar last time. I enjoyed that all year. Nothing can be depended on anymore in life except for Coupe Deville's and that 1053 button in my Jetta.
