I heard The Sugar Hill Gangs 'Apache'* for the first time when I was 8 or so. It was on KPOO. They play latin, blues, soul, hip hop, and jazz, and they have a news announcer with a speech impediment and that's neat. I like KPOO. *http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYprMNxcX4w read more

I'm sure the music is great, and if i had an opportunity while driving and my #6 preset station happened to be set to 89.5, I'm sure i would listen to it because independent radio is great. but the true reason this station gets 5 stars, aside from the fact that everyone seems to love it.... it makes me giggle. every time i walk down divis. i see the sign, and all i can think is...hehe. poo. so for giggle factor alone 5 stars. hehe. poo. read more

I keep KPOO on almost all the time, it's wonderful! The shows are unique, interesting, and the DJs are so passionate. Also, no commercials. If you stopped listening to radio because you realized you were getting brainwashed by top 40 BS, you're lucky to be living in SF where KPOO is a musical and cultural oasis. San Francisco would lose a lot of soul to see this station go- please listen, please support! Be sure to turn on JJ on the Radio Tuesday mornings to get the best soul, funk, Motown VINYL way to start your day- always puts me in a good mood :) read more

K-P-O-O San Francisco. Baby Baaaaaaaaby!!!! THE BEST radio station in the bay area. Wait, the state. Wait, no...THE WORLD!!!! The Good: Funk, soul, jazz, classic R&B played mostly (entirely?) on vinyl, evening news. JJ On the Radio Harrison Chastang Bobby Spiderweb The Church of Saint John William Coltrane Tuesdays!!! Baybee Baybee!! How can you listen to KPOO and not fall in love with this station? This is such a great station - I love the huge diversity in programming and I absolutely adore the lack of polish in the newsreaders. I am so excited that they stream on the internet since KPOO was one thing that I really missed about living in SF when I relocated to the East Bay in 2004. Keep up the excellent programming! read more

Wake up every BODY! Nice Gospel, Reggae, R & B, Soul, Blues, Jazz, New and Old School Hip Hop, Bay Area Slappers, Funk - black music by and large...my favorite overall station from the Bay. They got politics and community commentary. Very inter-generational as well, older DJ's reachin' farther back and still doing their damn thing with as much passion as they likely did back when. Very educational in that sense, a lot of obscure cuts that are new to me, even when I thought I had heard most all of em'. Nyce... read more

K to the P to the O to the O: K-POO! My dial is almost permanently set at KPOO, from Monday mornings with DJ Marilyn to some of the great old soul shows to Francesca on Friday nights to Chata's Salsa show on Saturday afternoons (been listening to that show for over 23 years)....KPOO's got me covered. And I am *always* surprised at least once during every show: "OMG listen to this (totally unexpected number)!". read more

Absolutely my all time favorite radio station. They are listener supported, commercial-free and kick-ass. JJ is my favorite. Saturday nights from 10pm-2am. Tuesday mornings he makes it hard for me to get outta bed and go to work as all I want to do is keep a listenin' to the best SOUL SOUNDS OF THE 60's and 70's. The other shows rock as well. But he's the the one who always can put me into a happy smilin' kinda mood. read more

This is great radio. I can turn this channel on any time and always find something good. There is always something different on and I appreciate that. There is everything from old school soul to jazz, there is some awesome funk and Latin music as well. You add a bit of news, politics and world happenings and you have this gem of a radio station. Don't touch that dial. ETA: The guy with the LISTHP is my favorite and he plays some good jazz. read more

Not a good source of music if you looking to motivate and get your day going in a upbeat way! They should try to be a lot more diverse considering where they are broadcasting!! 2 thumbs down for this station read more

Check out Kmaxx on KPOO: 10 pm-2 am SAT = Ghetto Gumbo Rap He plays unedited (original) versions of the songs -- no ish. Also he is a hero of mine -- a survivor of police brutality. Thanks for keeping it real, KPOO! read more

Please don't just listen, support. Just listening is what happened to listener supported station KDFC 102.1 KPOO is member supported and awesome. Radio normally is dribbling boring as f*%k junk, 89.5 is a not so. I believe KPOO is a cornerstone of the Bay. They stream online worldwide too. read more

They've an amazing and diverse selection of music and i've now just been able to get them more clearly since moving to San Mateo. I usually tune in during late hours and get my reggae or hip-hop fix. they'll play an entire album of Tupac, then play some Blackstar, followed by underground stuff...all in an hour. read more

Fantastic radio station! KPOO is a small, independent, non-commerical radio station and they play a great variety of: dancehall, jazz, hip-hop, soul, gospel, salsa, blues... The type of music totally depends on the DJ so you could be listening to Caribbean music, get out of the car at the grocery store, and come back to find KPOO is now playing jazz. The music is usually excellent no matter what the genre and they definitely play things you won't hear on any other radio station. Set one of the buttons in your car to 89.5! read more

this local is tops in my book. their music and talk shows lock me in whenever i scan through the radio dial. Mind you, i grew up loving disco r and b and soul, then progressed and related to hip hop rap, and further expanded to jazz and blues, which is a lot of what the dj's at kpoo play. for me, it's like listening to kmel in 1988. i have a soft spot for sos band, el debarge, heatwave, shalimar, guy, cameo, rebie jackson, jodeci, prince, the time, oh you know. their talk shows are interesting, relevant bay area views and fair as well so yeah, i like it. they were playing ice cube and the lynch mob jackin for beats the other day, i loved it! read more

Proof that terrestrial radio is not dead, but as vibrant and exciting as ever.

Probably the most solid-gold Cadillac 5-star business on Yelp. San FRANcisco, baby Baaaaaaaaby!

The BEST radio station in San Francisco. By far. Try to catch the oldies on Wed night (I think?), reggae on thu nights and Latin on Saturday afternoons. It is really outstanding. And I love local radio! Please support them if you can. read more

I seriously love this radio station. One of the few radio stations I can listen to without shutting it off 10 minutes in from annoyance.

KPOO is one of the finest radio stations I've ever had the pleasure to share listen to, let alone share a city with. Not only is it commercial-free blah blah blah, it is the first black-owned and operated radio station on the west coast, playing music by and for "po' folks" or anyone who just likes damn good music. They also cover important political/community topics, such as making affordable housing available to redevelopment in the Fillmore to the Bayview-Hunter's Point shipyard meetings. Absolutely do not miss the Grinder's Grooveyard on Mondays from 8:30pm to midnight, which is all really heavy crazy good old rare R & B. I am pretty sad when I go out on a Monday night and have to miss it. read more

This is my favorite radio station anywhere, and has been for over a decade. I love the variety, the personality, and the community spirit. Baby baby!!! read more

When I want free movie/concert tickets, I listen to KUSF. But when I want to dance while I'm washing dishes or cooking, I listen to KPOO.

The FAVORITE Radio Station for our whole family!! Amazing music!!! And totally cool DJ's!! Long live non-commercial radio! DONATE TO THIS STATION so we will always have them!!! read more

Wow. A genuine radio station! I discovered it by accident, but what a find! Great selection of lovingly selected works of genius. Check the schedule, or just listen and discover things you've never heard before, or rediscover things you have. read more

I grew up on KPOO. There are still many great DJs and great shows. That being said, Friday night and most of Saturday night (especially the reggae programs) are terrible. The DJs have not played a new song in 10 years, as if he's too good to seek out new music. On Friday night starting around 6pm and and Saturday night starting with the later afternoon early evening reggae, I feel like KPOO has been taken hostage by low vibration, low energy, uncreative DJs....real ego-centric DJs who think they are sooo special. Do some homework. Listen to other creative stations. Find some new music P-L-E-A-S-E! read more

i miss having a car only because i listen to the radio in cars and nowhere else. and when in the bay area and in a car, i listen only to kpoo. the most consistent blues, doo wop, jazz, r&b, hiphop, salsa, etc. station that i've heard on the airwaves. read more

I love this radio station. I've called in many a time to ask what was the name of the song that was just played, and the person on the other side is always so nice and knowledgeable, that I end up talking for more than 5 minutes. I like that they aren't constantly playing the same 4 songs over and over and over again. I've learned quite a bit from the djs at this station, and am always happy when I can receive them clearly. read more

Love this station! It is fantastic. Whenever Chinese Star Radio comes on KUSF I turn directly to KPOO...then it is stuck there for days and I love it! I have found all the radio i need in between here 89.5 and 90.7. Fantastic....we should just get rid of the rest of the dial! read more

This is by far my favorite radio station. I moved out of the western addition years ago and now stream it every day-nothing else compares to the jazz, Latin, and soul coming out of the Kpoo. read more

what a surprise to find they are on Divis.D. street!!! Weren't they out by the Oak-town/Bezerk-way? well, always interesting political discourse, contrary to anything that Lim-berg-er Cheez-whiz-KNEWTgingrinch wants to spew. Good jazz, hip-hop and local stuff. read more
