Dr. LaBrie is a wonderful veterinarian and animal surgeon. We brought in a neighborhood cat that had a long cut across his eye and he was able to repair the eye lid and saved his sight. Unfortunately, this same cat, which is now permanently indoors, got in cat fight and walked away with a serious and rare infection. Dr. LaBrie has walked us through each step of treatment including finding a lab that would mix the specific antibiotics into liquid form so we could administer the medicine successfully. Brilliant and compassionate while also pragmatic and honest. Highly recommended. read more

The staff here are terrific. They are very pleasant and knowledgeable. The vets explain everything in detail in terms you can understand. They are very gentle with the animals. I've looked for a good vet many places and here is where my dogs will be taken care of. They do surgery, blood work and all necessary procedures along with well-dog visits and emergency visits. I had my pup do a teeth cleaning, and two extractions. I was advised that two molars would be extracted ($700). Only one was extracted and I never got a phone call as to what I wanted to do. They took it upon themselves to not extract the other tooth. Now my sweet pup is suffering and having to get the 2nd molar extracted. By a different vet. But the fact that Kothman/Lebrie never called and took it upon themselves to NOT extract the tooth makes me furious. $1k later here I am. read more

My all time favorite vet office. The doctors and staff are kind, talented and super knowledgeable.

Took my puppy to get spayed here. They left a staple in her from the surgery. They said it would dissolve but it never did. It ended up getting infected and I had to take her into an emergency vet clinic on 1604 because she was throwing up and very lethargic. She ended up going into septic shock from the infected staple and we had to put her down at 9 months old. The vet at emergency hospital on 1604 called kothman vet to let them know what had happened and they left a staple in her. I went $3,000 into financial trouble trying to save my baby. When I called Kothman vet to tell them, front desk lady just said "we don't use staples" I have proof of the staple in her a month after spaying and I have proof the vet on 1604 found a staple from the ultrasound and it was infected. I was never even allowed to speak or meet the doctor when I took her in because of "Covid protocol" at Kothman vet. She died because of Kothman vet's simple mistake. We took her here because the good reviews and didn't mind paying extra for good service. IF YOU LOVE YOUR DOGS DONT TAKE THEM HERE. Edit; as per Kothmann vet's lame response. I am a college student with limited supplies. I don't even own a stapler let alone do not see how my puppy could've swallowed a staple in my bare apartment. Anyways, here is a picture of my puppy A WEEK AFTER HER SPAYING. We were confused by this staple because we were told there were no staples and everything would dissolve. It looked red and swollen which is why we took the picture to compare if it was getting worse or better as time went on. Shame on you all for victim blaming. Kothmann Vet left a staple in my 6 month old beagle. When I contacted them about it they said they don't use staples. Here is proof a week after her spaying surgery there is a staple. My puppy got an infection from the surgical site, we took her to an emergency pet hospital and she ended up going into septic shock because her organs were failing from the infection. We had to euthanize her because she was in so much pain and her organs were failing. Here is proof the ultrasound found the staple on her surgical site. The owner at Kothmann vet tried to claim the emergency vet hospital said "she swallowed the staple." This picture is proof the staple was not swallowed but left from her spaying surgery. If you love your animals, take them somewhere else. We went $3,000 into debt trying to save my baby girl beagle. Dr. Labrea performed her surgery. read more

This Veterinary clinic has lost my business and I hope many others read this review and consider taking their business elsewhere. I have been coming to this clinic for over ten years and had nothing but wonderful things to say until now. My dog developed an ear hematoma which is not a threatening condition but the staff here filled my head with fear and pushed a surgery for the removal of the hematoma. I researched hematoma treatment and came across two things, one for the draining of it using a needle, or two, getting it drained surgically. After taking my pup to different vets, I got told to wait on it for the body to reabsorb it and if over time if it didn't seem to decrease in size,then to schedule surgery. I was advised to not do the draining with a needle method, as that brings a high risk of infection. I was advised that at Kothman as well and they urged me to do the surgery as soon as possible. Keep in mind my dog had only had the hematoma for 2.5 weeks. So of course I did what I thought was best and with the vet I've had for years. 3 weeks post surgery, the hematoma comes back and with a vengeance. After spending a little over $600 at Kothman, they tell me they will charge to see my dog and for whatever procedure they have to do. Which by the way they said the procedure would most likely be to drain the hematoma with a needle! After they told me that, which clearly contradicted their advice 3 weeks ago, I decided to get the opinion of other vets again and What they told me was that she should've never gotten surgery until after 5 weeks of it not decreasing in size,and that they never recommend doing the neddle method because of the high risk of infection (which could actually kill my dog). They told me that the hematoma will look worse before it gets better and that I unfortunately just waisted my money with Kothman clinic. Shame on Kothman for using fear and taking money from people during a pandemic. read more

Dr. Kothmann is retiring and leaving his clinic in the hands of a snooty, entitled little prick!! A vet who won't listen to owners or fosters on a dog's demeanor. Wont bend down to a dog that can't or shouldn't be lifted on his table bc he's too lazy to do his job. Then turns around and lies about the events of the situation. In his own words "If you don't like it, feel free to take your pets to another vet" Well that's the only good advice he's given I will take them to a more attentive, respectful vet that actually listens!! read more

One of the most unprofessional clinics I have ever worked with. Dr. Kothmann is retiring and leaving his clinic in the hands of a lazy unprofessional staff. We explained to them one of our fosters is traumatized and SHOULD NOT BE PICKED UP AT ALL!!!!!!!!! When taken to the back the dogs foster was told she could wait in the lobby. Less than 5 minutes later Dr. Labrea comes out to explain he cannot issue the HC for transport because our foster bit a vet tech when they tried to lift her on the table. He claims they had a muzzle on the dog and she got it off. The never had a muzzle on her until after she reacted to being picked up for the 3rd time after the first two times were unsuccessful. I called to talk to them because my foster at this point is hysterical because she told them what not to do and they thought they knew better and ignored her. When I called heather answered the phone "Kothmann, May I place you on a hold" I tell her you can but I am calling about this dog so I need the vet or manager was my response. She is claiming I was irate with her and tore into her. The vets story was they muzzled the dog, took her to the back, she broke out of the muzzle, bit a vet tech, and they remuzzled her. I asked him why couldn't you do the exam on the floor, his exact response "I'm not going to get on the ground and chase her around to do and exam" why not??? We had four other dogs there who were easy and you couldn't modify the exam for a traumatized dog?? We have proof she was never muzzled until after. He reported this dog to the city and not we have to see what will happen. This is the second dog this same dr has done this to within a month that I know of! If you are a rescue with a scared dog in ANYWAY DO NOT GO HERE!!! He will either deem your dog aggressive or report them because they will not listen to your advice on how to treat these babies!!! If you don't wanna work with rescues DONT OFFER RESCUE DISCOUNTS! It's that simple. He advised us "if you don't like it feel free to use another vet" and that is the best most honest thing to ever leave his mouth! read more

My baby had a scab and irritation on her belly that looked suspicious to me. I noticed Monday morning as I was heading out to work, so we needed a last minute appointment with the vet. Dr Chris LaBrie was able to see us the same day...hallelujah! Daisy's best friend, Gabi, goes to this office regularly and her mama recommended Kothmann pet hospital to us. So very thankful for that recommendation because they are awesome! Dr Chris gave me his opinion and made me feel much better about my little one. I also had him look at her teeth because there is some mild tarter/plaque buildup on them. He explained to me that little dogs with their crowded teeth are predisposed to it, and that her gums looked fine. Based on that, he wouldn't recommend a cleaning at this time since the risks of anesthesia outweigh the benefits. Can I saw "wow!?" The last vet I took her to would have put her to sleep for the cleaning without hesitation (and $500 later...ugh). This is an honest, down to earth veterinary pet clinic that doesn't try to sell you on unnecessary treatment. Go see Dr Chris and his staff. They are amazing! And reasonably priced. I have been coming here for almost 5 years. I have rescued 4 dogs and have brought them all here for their shots and all needs. My second rescue went through heartworm treatment procedures here as well. Victoria is wonderful and extremely compassionate for animals. Dr. Labrie is awesome and always answers my questions and Dr. Kothmann is also a sweetheart. Sage and Heather up front are also very friendly and their vet tech who's a young man is so kind. Their prices are very fair and don't try to rip you off like other places in Alamo Heights. I highly recommend to anyone and everyone asking for a new veterinarian. read more

I understand Dr. laBrie responded to my review implying I have never used this office. That's odd, given this vet, LaBrie, performed surgeries on two of my dogs. Lots of clients, so, understandable not to remember. I came to Kothmann after being a client of Dr. Larry o Wood for 25 years. Upon his retirement, I came to meet the vets that would be caring for my dogs. Older vet was pleasant and helpful. Dr. L. walked away...no excuse me, nothing. Maybe a bad day as the office was full. Last incident happened when there was confusion about dropping off an animal and an office person called and said, "so, are you bringing her in or what". On the day this happened, I went to Kothmann to pick up records for my dogs. Three office personnel attempted to print out the medical histories, with no luck. One employee said "well, guess we need pa new printer". They struggled and approximately 15 minutes later, I leave with the needed paperwork. I used to work there a long time ago, while going to college for my nursing degree. I have known Doc for decades and have taken my animals there just as long. I can tell you behind the scenes everything was always done professionally, and up front things continue to be that way. Dr. LaBrie has been awesome as well and a pleasure to interact with. I love the staff, they are compassionate and committed. The only time I've had to go elsewhere was when we were sent for some particular specialty, or for an emergency. This was my first visit to Kothmann's, unfortunately it was to have a young cat euthanized. This cat had an owner, but was an outside cat only ... kinda a colony cat visitor. He was sick and I took him to another vet 7 days prior. I was giving meds twice a day, fluids, breathing treatments, but the cat would not eat. He was in bad shape and it was time for him to cross the rainbow bridge. I called this clinic the day before, but did not make an appointment. I decided late at night that it was time. I showed up in the morning, they took me in even without an appointment. The front desk was very kind. The vet I saw was Dr. LaBrie. He was very compassionate and spent the entire procedure with me as did the tech. I may start taking my personal pets there. The outside doesn't look like much, but the inside is super cool, the original, Dr. Kothmann put a lot into it. If you are considering another option for your pet, give them a try, maybe go there before you actually need them. read more

Dr. Labrie spent time talking to us about food choices, chip solutions, training procedures, etc. Then he examined Arlo. I will definitely take Arlo back here!! read more
