Now they have expanded into serving delicious take out foods such as falafel, salads, fries, and different delicious sandwiches. They have the best, baguettes, bread, coconut puffs, cinnamon buns. Really. And OMG their water challah is absolutely to die for. The owner is always around and willing to help if you have any issues, so are the wonderful women behind the counter.

Here's what I found. When I came in there were seven or eight customers, yet the place was noisy. Staff noise, lots of people moving around doing what? Not a quiet meal but I was hungry so I put up with it. The server took my order: a (huge) bowl of soup, a salt beef on rye with mustard, and what I thought would be a small order of cole slaw on the side, and a glass of water. About ten or fifteen minutes after I arrived, a guy came and sat down near me and ordered. Then I began to wait. Within five or six minutes, the fellow on my right, received his food. The server had brought me my water, which was the only thing she did right. I sat and waited for at least another 15 minutes. Finally I pointed out to the server that I had arrived earlier but the man to the right was already eating his meal. She finally went and got the soup, which probably should have come immediately. The soup was absolutely the worst I have ever eaten in my 81 years on this planet. It smelled like dirty sink water, and tasted like it too. It had matzah balls, which were mediocre at best, and I ate them, but the soup was beyond disgusting. Then I waited some more until I could get the eye of the server. I let her know I was ready for the salt beef. The meat was lean, as I had asked for, but it was quite dry and barely warm, like it had been sitting for a bit. It also lacked sufficient mustard for me so I had to ask a different server for more. My server(?) never appeared again. The cole slaw was fine, an exception to everything else except it was a very large order and cost 11 pounds, I think. To pay my bill, which came to over 38 British pounds (more than $50), I had to signal another server since mine had, as I noted, disappeared. The final price, for what I got, was not just exorbitant, it was highway robbery, as we say in America. Noise, horrible service and server, horrible soup, mediocre salt beef --- possibly the worst experience I've ever had in a Jewish deli, and I've eaten in dozens all over the US, in Canada, in Ireland, in England, and even in Israel. I'll never to back to Ruebens and I don't advise anyone else to either.

While Ivor Silverman further down the road don't have the range of bread products and baked goods, they are licensed and do have challot if you need them in a pinch.

This influence is definitely on show with the food, with brunch featuring twists on classics such as shakshuka and scrambled eggs - different? yes; delicious? yes; special? not in my opinion. Where Zest really falls down is service. From waiting over 5 minutes to be told there was a wait of around 5 min to be seated, to the waiter completely not hearing our order and needing us to repeat it, to his brash outlining of the bottomless brunch rules (which he then excused by saying he wasn't being rude!), to the chefs looking exasperated at the lack of service - it was all very Fawley Towers! The menu (kosher dairy) is vegetarian and fish, with strong Middle Eastern/Mediterranean influences thanks to Algerian-Strian-Israeli chef Eran Tibi, who worked with Ottolenghi a few years ago. (Tibi's family has owned restaurants for generations.) Plus, this place has the most attractive waitstaff. It was hard to decide what to order, but I finally settled on the Sephardic ratatouille (with aubergines, courgettes, sunflower seeds, and a single roast cherry tomato) and sweet potato gnocchi. The ratatouille was great but very small. However, the gnocchi was fantastic. The gnocchi were pan-seared and piled on a bed of sort-of baba ghanoush, with yogurt drizzles and pomegranate seeds, surrounded by a smattering of crispy fried onion pieces. It was absolutely amazing. Meanwhile, I saw some of the soup of the day (sweet potato and bok choy) being served, and had to order some. The bok choy added just a necessary hint of sourness to the sweetness of the soup; it's served with slices of toasted challah. I need to go back and try everything else on the menu. My only complaint is that everything is pretty expensive for the size, but you always pay more for kosher, organic, seasonal, and made with this much expertise.

The sandwiches, paninis and bagels we ordered were good as well with one hiccup...My daughter ordered an egg and avocado sandwich and the avocado was not ripe, so that was disappointing to her. My husband and I enjoyed our food. They had some games at the table so it was fun to play those while we waited. Overall, a good experience, it was relaxing and as we were leaving the son gave my daughter a pastry and said he was sorry about the avocado.
