What caught our eye was the weathered 1800s cabin, jail cages and wagon next to the museum. We thought..."this could be interesting"-and it was! Monty McCanless, who is a tireless worker and member of the Historical Society, gave us a personal tour. First, the 1800s kitchen complete with wood burning stove, side board, table, utensils and pantry staples. There is much in this museum that relates to early pioneering women: their dress, quilting, and a club -The International Federation of Women's Club (that my mom belonged to several states west) scrapbooks and memorabilia. Fowler blossomed with introduction of a canal and sophisticated irrigation systems in the 1800s. You see pictures of the irrigation pipes as well as the pipes and maps. Many trades, occupations are chronicled. There are doctor and optometrist tools, branding irons and brands, saddles of popular locals, inside of a post office, old electric gas station signs, sharks tooth and arrowhead collections and a few Native American artifacts. This hardly scratches the surface of what's there...well displayed BTW.

Make sure you set aside a couple of hours when you come to visit. The history of Las Animas and the characters that made the town are well documented here. The tour guide at the museum is a wealth of knowledge, and the presentation is simply spell binding. If you have noticed the museum and wondered, make a point to go. Enjoy and learn of Las Animas' unique yet important place in the history of Colirado. If you think you will be boared, you are soo wrong, this place is well done and fascinating.

Had a good variety of exhibits from objects and education to personal contributions of passer-by and locals. My favorite installation was herbal remedies from visitors and I got some good ones I'm going to try! They also have an exhibit that teaches about the long history of mining in the area from a human and family perspective, where a visitor can say which mine their family is associated with. Such a wonderful place for someone like me who has family history in the area, or someone who has never been there and just wanted to walk through. Glad I finally made the trip. One of the finest museums I've been to in a long time (I've been all over the world to many museums), and honestly I learned a lot more than expected from such a small town. Very impressed and will be recommending to colleagues and fellow travelers. Keep up the good work! Kind and friendly staff with a nice gift shop- got half my Christmas shopping down! You come across a lot of household items that you might not see in a large metropolitan type museum. There are old antique weapons, a saloon, wagons, and a little schoolhouse; like something you would see out of Little House on the Prairie. Walking Main Street an thankfully stumbled upon this gem…read more A.R Mitchell was a Trinidad native and was known as "King of the Pulp Magazine Covers". Most of this art museum is dedicated to his works and accoutrements. If you are fan of Cowboy/Western Art then is a must stop. I Particularly was interested in the Spanish folk art, and Native American pottery. This museum hosts a lot of local artists, with Hans Droog being of particular note, his "Swirly Horse 1" is mesmerizing. The building the art pieces are housed in is 115 years old, this building itself is a work of art, the hardwood alone floors made me swoon. You can easily spend an hour here moving on the 1st floor then 2ed floor and then back down to the gift area. Allyson, was very kind to take time out of her busy day and explain Mitchell's relationship to Harold Von Schmidt who's use of color is unique, his style and expressiveness draws you in, you feel as if you are in the scene he has created. Allyson also answered a million questions, the chat with her was as interesting as the art work. Free admission is the cherry on top.
