I am hoping our experience isn't the norm and it was just a "bad day". I wanted to write the…read morereview because we tried this karate center based off reviews and because my son is still affected by his experience here. We set up an appointment to meet with the instructor as part of the beginner package that they advertise. They were informative and cordial on the phone so I was expecting nothing less when we came to the appointment. Introductions were made, I was asked to fill out paperwork, and while I did that my son was fitted for a uniform since the one I brought wasn't the right colors for their place. The instructor took my son back to the mat and started the lesson. There was no tour of the facility or us being asked if we had questions or time for our son to take in his surroundings and get comfortable and ready. We noticed the instructor demanded our sons utmost attention and cooperation and if it was not given he was reprimanded in a demeaning tone. Then when he gave instructions to my son that he did not understand, my son got nervous, and I tried to speak up for him letting the instructor know that with the masks and since my son is hard of hearing, he could not understand what was being asked of him. I was shut down immediately, told that he did in fact understand, and he continued to demand that my son do what he was instructing. My son turned around to me in tears, running over and saying he just wanted to go. My husband and I were in complete shock. We tried to comfort our son and then ask if he wanted to continue but he was too shook up to continue. To treat a 6 year old and talk to him in such a way was not what we expected at all. We had to leave after only being there for 10 minutes and while we were not charged, all that was said was it wasn't a good fit. There was no remorse for my son leaving in tears. So I write all of this to say that I think this is a good place if your child can focus extremely well, and can take strict instruction immediately when its given to them and act without asking questions. I support and understand discipline and focus being taught in karate but that was extreme even to my husband and I. My son is now anxious to try anything new where he has to meet a new instructor because he doesn't want it to be like "that karate place". It has stuck with him even at 6 years old how he was treated and that it was not kind. Like I said, I hope it was just a bad time for the instructor, and indeed not a good fit for us, rather than it being the norm.
