This review is on the cooking classes offered at Sur La Table. We decided to take the Lunar New…read moreYears cooking class to learn how to make soup dumplings. The cooking place was pretty cool. There was flavored water to sip on while we waited for the class to start. The whole cooking experience was shared between 4 different people. The table is kind of small for us to work on especially with how many people attended the class. The kitchen had a tv to see what was going on but for some reason it wasn't facing the chef so it was pretty useless. The class has helpers to the chef which was very useful. There was someone to helped with cleaning dishes, someone to help us when we couldn't figure out what to do or if we had questions, and someone who helped create the prep of ingredients. Our teacher was nice but it felt like we rushed through cooking the dish. The important stuff was pre prepared which was kind of a bummer. Like the dough for the dumplings was kneaded already and the filling for the soup dumplings were premade. I was also kind of bummed to know that it's super hard to make the soup dumpling filling. We also made some stir-fry noodles and green beans. It was interesting to learn how green beans are prepared to be so crisp via blanching in oil.

Our chef made sure that we understood his instructions to prepare the meal. He emphasized the importance of "mise en place" which means having everything prepared in advance. Our meal was Seared Scallops with Champagne Beurre Blanc, Saffron-Scented Risotto with Peas and Prosciutto, and Chocolate Souffle with Salted Caramel Sauce. We started with making the Risotto. Each couple was matched with another couple and took turns with the preparation. There was a 10 minute break to give the class participants the time to walk around the shop. We finished the risotto and made the scallops. The souffle was the only portion of the meal that the students did not prepare. We enjoyed the experience and decided to take another class.

We had a fun class with Ms. Jenna; she's very kind and conscientious. Most of my arts center experience is with Wallingford Arts Center (now Community Arts Center) having grown up close to it. I remember wearing smocks and play clothes to those classes as a kid because we got dirty and did cool artistic stuff! Wayne Art Center told us to send kids in clothes that can get dirty so I did, but none of the other kids were dressed in anything but their Target and Boden "finest," which was just so lame. I know it's Wayne and not the arts center staff. I don't blame them or Jenna; they're reading the room. Wayne = the movie Greener Grass. My bad. Aside from some tempera, he didn't do much with paints, used pastels once, and no charcoal or other mediums that could soil clothes. I guess here, it's a b!tchfest liability thing, but it's a missed opportunity to me because kids are capable of much more. I appreciate the staff for doing all they can. Like all things Wayne, it was professional, but like all things Wayne, it lacked the inspiration that my kind of art requires.

There was no instruction and it was not a cooking class at all. They simply divided us into groups and told us to follow the recipe they handed out. It was a huge disappointment and I would not recommend this cooking class.

My husband originally hired her as a surprise for a romantic dinner for two for my birthday. Chef Sue made us "seared ahi tuna with broccolini and forbidden black rice with toasted sesame seeds." She also made a gluten free apple tart for dessert. It was all prepared and served to us in our home. Best part was ... the clean up was done by Chef Sue Clair as well. I felt like royalty and the meal was top notch. After that experience, we hired Chef Sue Clair for prepared meals. What a great decision. We went with a bi-weekly package which consisted of three entrees (4 of each and customized for our dietary needs) I LOVE SOUPS ... so I choose a lentil curry carrot soup as one of my entrees. All I can say is yum!!! Chef Sue does it all ... romantic dinners, customized meal prep, dinner parties, delivered food for events ... you name it. She's one of the best and I would recommend her over anyone if your in the Phila
