Without a doubt my favourite of the inner city beaches in Auckland, Kohimarama is like Mission Bay's grandmother. It's quiet, unassuming and generally doesn't attract loads of teenagers and their footballs.
I find the sea around Mission Bay dirty and full of seaweed. Because of its location near the port, the water just feels a bit contaminated so it doesn't make for good swimming conditions. It's strange considering Kohimarama's close proximity to Mission Bay but this beach just feels so much cleaner and less polluted. You can actually see your feet when you stand in the water here!
Also, due to the fact that there are hardly any cafes or restaurants littering it's sidewalks, Kohimarama never really feels that busy. It's the perfect place to come for a relaxing afternoon in the sun with a picnic and a good book. Quiet, peaceful, perfect. read more
