Burnham Bakery and Piggery Cafe - Brunch! Delish!

What a place! Well worth the drive and what a picturesque drive it is. The first thing you notice…read moreis the magnificent looking silos. On a wet summers day the mist was rolling in so it made it all the more pretty. Everything about the cafe is thought thru, from the bakery to finishing touches of the decor. Our waiter was efficient and had a great sense of humour. He certainly made it all the more memorable. The drinks came quickly followed by our delicious meals. We were there for breakfast but there is everything from buying a loaf of bread and toasting it yourself, pastries to the purchase of three different sized picnic baskets. And if the salads on display are anything to go by I'll certainly be back to order one and stroll through their gardens. They are currently expanding the gardens. But there is plenty to do! From lawn bowls, children's play areas, picnic area and meet bubble and squeak the residents of the pig sty. I couldn't recommend the Piggery Cafe enough. I will certainly be back. I could imagine that it will get busy on the weekends if during the week was anything to go by - so be prepared. Happy eating.

Really enjoyed it. We had the cheeseburger, a whole grilled trout with a side of rosemary fries,…read moreand a smoked sausage hot and pink from the smoker, a little spicy and served with pickled cucumber and carrot. One of the few places in Melbourne that cooks burgers to order, but unfortunately we ordered medium rare and it arrived well done. Still tasty though! The trout, however, was genuinely AMAZING. Succulent and cooked to perfection on a hot grill. Chips were golden and crispy with a rosemary salt, really good. The sausage and pickles were delicious. There's no phone signal (for us anyway) so it's a rare chance to fully focus without the temptation of peeking at the phone. The meals took a fair stint to arrive, but we weren't there for fast food and the location is incredibly beautiful so it was a nice chance to stop and breathe. Speaking of breathing - we were seated outside, and every time the wind gusted our way there was a waft of .... I don't know what. Sewage? Pigs? Something on the septic side of the scent spectrum (I know, pure poetry). It wasn't pleasant so I removed a star for that.

Burnham Bakery and Piggery Cafe - Bad 'cashew and almond pancakes with banana and seasonal fruit'. Dry, expensive ($14), and the 'seasonal fruit' was a quarter poached pear.

Had a long hard morning climbing the 1000 steps of the Kokoda Memorial Trail and my girlfriends and…read moreI were looking forward to a well deserved protein hit (read: bacon and coffee please). We headed over the road to cute little cafe called Brew'd. We entered to find wooden floors and exposed brick which gave a funky New York loft vibe. We were greeted by... Oh wait, we weren't. We came inside and hovered awkwardly around the counter for about 5 minutes, waiting to be seated, or perhaps were meant to seat ourselves? Is there table service? They need a sign or something because the barista sure wasn't in a hurry to let us know, or to even say hello really. Hmm. Eventually someone directed us to a table and we helped ourselves to a menu. It was pretty impressive I've got to say. Lots of choice and very well priced. I ordered smashed avo, bacon and eggs which I paid for.. In cash... Because they are cash only. No I don't mean they have a $20 minimum, I mean it's 1980 again and we're all expected to walk around carrying pineapples. Ugh this is my pet peeve. If you are a business where people regularly pay you amounts higher than $10, GET AN EFTPOS MACHINE!!!! It's very lucky that my smashed avo more than made up for this massive transactional faux pas. It was delicious! They also do really, really good coffee. Their coffees come with a little chocolate on the spoon. I love a bonus treat with my coffee, Brew'd definitely knew their way to my heart. Even if I had to pay in cash for it.. The good: nice decor, expansive menu, very well priced (avg $15 for a hearty brekky), really good coffee, bonus chocolate The bad: cash only!!! Slightly non-attentive staff

Took a chance driving over from Wantirna South in search of a decent brunch as there was only one…read morereview but came away happy we did. Managed to secure a table outside which was a bonus and we were promptly given menus and told to order at the counter. The menu isn't enormous but contained all the standard fair and tbh it's nice to have your choices limited when you're fighting off the effects of the night before. I went for the Veggie Breakfast and my wife chose the Atlantic Eggs and both came out within 10min. Both dishes were an ideal size and the presentation was very appetising, my tomatoes were nicely grilled, the mushrooms were properly sautéed not pale and watery as can often be the case and the spinach and feta were in good proportion. The only criticism would be that the poached eggs were a minute over done, still slightly runny yolks but definitely over. I tried my wife's eggs and the hollandaise was rich and perfectly tart but again eggs slightly over (at least for our liking). Overall $45 for 2 good brekkies and 2 coffees is very reasonable and we'll definitely add this to our brunch rotation.

So the teas are good. I remember my first visit here about 6 years ago and buying over 10 different…read moreteas because I was so excited by the sheer volume and variance of teas available. But then I took all my tea home and the magic of the store left my body and I was like 'why did I just buy all this tea?!' Don't get me wrong, if you're a tea lover then this place is worth the journey to explore. Staff are helpful and you'll want to spend ages in the shop. But I feel this place has become a tourist trap. Nothing is sacred in the Yarra Ranges anymore and its overrun with bus loads of people coming here to smell some tea. It's easy to get caught up in the hype but in reality, its a tea shop. There are plenty around Melbourne that don't require such a drive and I don't have to brave mass crowds to get some damn tea. On a recent trip to Melbourne I returned to tea leaves and the magic didn't work. I was actually not in need of tea, and with the crowds of people scrambling around I could not get out quickly enough. They've increased in notoriety of the years and it makes me sad for actual tea lovers who just. want. to. get. some. tea. Unless you're willing to fight for parking, wait and hour to get into Mrs Marples and spend that hour squished inside tea leaves, it hardly seems worth it anymore.

Winner of nine tourism awards and operating for seventeen years the shop itself is very impressive with items I have not seen anywhere else - definitely a must-visit for any tea lovers out there. You won't want to carry any bags in here because it is very easy to knock things over. The store itself is very cluttered with plain shelving that reaches up to the roof and every shelf packed full with a variety of teapots in every shape, size, colour and even facial expression. My favourite was a little Martian teapot that at $72 was a little out of my price range but was very cute none-the-less. As well as the hundreds of incredible teapots there was also tea, coffee, chocolate and biscuits available for purchase. The chocolates looked absolutely gorgeous and the coffee impressive in big glass jars lining the counter. There was an A4 poster on the wall with tea facts written on it which was pretty groovy - definitely check that out if you want to learn something new. The service here was a little lax as despite the bell ringing to signal my entrance no one greeted me at all. The first time I saw a staff member was to excuse myself as I passed her in one of the narrow aisles. It wasn't very impressive in that regard. Tea Leaves is open from 10-5.30 every single day of the year except for Christmas and is a great place to get a signature teapot for you or for a fun gift for a friend.
