Have you ever seen a real embalming table? I have, at Segur-Knapp Funeral Home. In my day, the high school offered a field trip to this place. I assume it was for health class which, when you think about it, is a good promotion for a healthy lifestyle. I learned about the embalming process, the cosmetology aspect and other fascinating things. I sometimes wonder if, in the days of CSI, these trips have become more graphic. Maybe they mention purging now. What's purging you ask?
PURGE - A discharge from the deceased through the mouth, nose and ears of matter from the stomach and intestine caused by improper or ineffectual embalming, due to putrefaction.
I'm not sure these guys get paid enough.
Later in life, I attended my Grandfather's funeral at this same establishment. It was nice, traditional. I thought about the Preparation Room and that table, about the difference between knowing about the process and knowing the person who was prepared. I talked a bit with the men who work there. They've known my family longer than I have, and might have to prep a few more of us before retiring. It's quite a job they have. They do it with dignity.
I'd love to take that tour again. I'd ask about aspiration. read more
