More details:
I'm starting a new business, and I needed portraits for my new website. (My husband was also overdue for professional portraits.) A friend recommended Jesus as a photographer for professional headshots, and we liked the online photos of our friend and her colleagues.
Jesus has a gift for making us feel at home. I have a quirky, big personality and my husband is pretty reserved. Still, when my husband and I compared notes afterwards, we each raved about how Jesus made conversation and gave instructions/feedback that made us feel comfortable. We even enjoyed ourselves, despite both of us having been a little nervous beforehand.
After the shoot, Jesus sent us at least 60 photos each so we could choose the 5 we wanted him to touch up. There were at least 15 great ones and 10 gems, so narrowing it down was tough. After choosing my five favorites, I wrote an extremely detailed list of requested touch-ups, and Jesus was very understanding and flexible about my list of requests. The final photos are amazing. He actually ended up sending about 15 polished photos, because he offered different crops of each of the 5 photos I'd chosen.
For the amount of time and effort Jesus put in, his fee was very reasonable. Even though we live about an hour south of San Francisco, my husband and I are already hoping to return to Jesus for a couples portrait shoot.
Jesus gets extra bonus points for the following:
- At our request, he arranged to have both of our hair and makeup sessions outside in his garden to decrease COVID risk.
- He choreographed the outdoor photo shoots to take place in a variety of settings around the block where his studio is located. That allowed for multiple poses and lighting combinations.
- He built in multiple wardrobe changes for my husband and me, and we'll be using photos from each of our outfits.
- I have a chronic eye problem that makes my eyes very asymmetrical. He took that all in stride, and he chose poses and angles that minimized my eyes' uneven appearance.
- His website for sharing thumbnails and polished, high def photos is reliable and easy to use.
- A detail that shows Jesus' thoughtfulness: As my husband and I were having our hair/makeup sessions in his garden, Jesus had music playing softly in the background in his studio. I mentioned in passing that I don't tend to listen to techno, and Jesus subtly switched the playlist to classic boleros and ballads from Latin America. He was spot-on in guessing and switching to music I enjoy.
A few additional details:
- Parking in the studio's swanky neighborhood is challenging, but Jesus offered a parking spot in his studio driveway.
- Apparently, Jesus usually sends a contract to the client ahead of time, but we hadn't received one. So we needed to wait for him to send us the contract after the shoot before we could pay him and choose our favorite photos.
- Our friend told us that Blue Chair Studios arranged the details for the hair and makeup stylist, but, in coordinating arrangements with Jesus, it seemed like maybe the client typically arranges that. Please check with Jesus about who is supposed to find and arrange logistics for the stylist.
