Lounge is expensive too. I have to admit, I do get most of my items from the sale rail, but it still tends to be over and above your usual high street branch. However, I also think that the quality is above and beyond. For a start, they tend to go with a few designers that they have individually sourced so you are always going to find something a little different. Often, they only buy in one item of each size and pattern, so you can be pretty sure you are not going to bump in to someone wearing the same dress! Everything is well made and the cut is usually flattering and fits well. The girls in the shop (the owner and the staff) are all really helpful, offering advise and suggestions of what goes with what. They are friendly and happy to chat even if you are just browsing. Lewes is full of independent boutiques but Lounge is definitely one of the best.

Lounge was the last shop I entered in to, probably the first one that wasn't a chain store or a charity shop. Unfortunately though, the clothes weren't really right for what I wanted. The products were fashionable enough, offering formal and evening wear, all for women. Price wise, it was also a little bit steep. This isn't greatly surprising in a place like Lewes, but I just wasn't bowled over by the selection, especially not at the prices, and especially when Brighton is so close.

Actually, one of the areas missing here is the rather annoying set up of make-over and fragrance 'experts' set up near the entrance, so right away I preferred this less-congested location. The Health side of the shop includes vitamins, cold and flu fighters, band-aids and other first aid treatments as well as alternative medicinal therapies. Two pharmacists were on shift at the time of my visit, despite it being quite slow. The Beauty section - separated by a large doorway, almost as though a different shop - has items for hair and skin, bath products, hairdryers, curlers and straighteners, and fragrances. There's also a line of baby products, a small snack aisle and a photo section that includes albums, frames and a digital print shop. In summary - smaller, but enough.

It sells the…read moreusual large range of pharmaceutical products, cosmetics and toiletries, and there's a photo shop as well. The pharmacy section can get quite busy, presumably catering to Hove's large population of pensioners. It doesn't have much of a range of electrical goods or an opticians, but these are available in the large city-centre Brighton branch - reached by the frequent number 7 bus which goes straight there and takes about 10 minutes.

There are items pilled everywhere yet it's easy to navigate and find things- a difficult balance to achieve. And, the owner has found that balance between cutesy and chic. You don't always notice it but those little balancing acts are hard to do- so credit to this shop! The women's section stocks Marimmeko dresses in fabulous prints, Orla Kiely clothing and accessories in more great prints, Cath Kidston accessories in more great prints! Cath Kidston extends into the kid's section with her polka dots and cowboy prints. They have camper shoes for mother's and soft flannel toys for the kid's and Linum fabrics for the house. Very nice.

They person who does the buying for the Laurels is obviously into patterns, as they stock a lot of Orla Kiely stuff, Cath Kidson homeware and Marimekko clothing. Personally I find Orla Kiely patterns a bit blobby, and Cath Kidson a bit too twee, but if you like that look then this place is great. It is certainly a stark contrast to shops like Flint who go in for the 'any colour as long as it is a variation of off white' look. The stock, being branded, isn't particularly cheap (the Marimekko dresses were around £150, despite being very simple designs), but the fact that they sell lots of little bits and pieces means this would probably be a good place to look for presents for mums/kids, etc.

I should have been able to guess the price range from the designer names on the walls - Dolce & Gabbana. Stella Mcartney, Paul ... something. The cheapest top I saw was £125, and it was just skimpy, thin fabric. I suppose you'd be paying for the genius creativity that went into the design, though. Is that the way it works? I kept looking, though, for interest's sake. Jeans - £335, a lovely sweater for£ 425. It was all nice stuff - accessories included shoes and belts and bags, and I noticed a few stylish winter coats. So, I suppose I would recommend Mottoo if these prices seem about right to you.

These sale items are near the front of the shop, and, upon closer inspection, I'd say most of them were quite cute, but with one strange detail per item. Some have strangely puffy shoulders. Others have a zipper down the first of the top. You know, just odd things. Some clothing racks are marked as under £10 and include a few pairs of jeans - but in a sort of weird, sky blue. The regular priced outfits are much nicer. I saw some great suit jackets for around £65, and lots of sweaters for between £40 - £50. The selection is quite impressive, as the shop continues much farther back than it first seems. Boots are displayed in a few places throughout the shop, and the shoe section in the back contains an assortment of brightly coloured high heels, winter boots and flat shoes. Accessories include the usual selections of jewellery and winter attire and there are also a few watches available, starting at around £20.

Lulu Rose is Yoma's sister shop located in Kensington Gardens. Whereas Yoma is marketed at women in…read moretheir twenties and thirties, Lulu Rose is aimed at a younger demographic. The shop is packed with vibrant, youthful clothing and many of the same bags and accessories you'll find at Yoma. This store is much larger than Yoma and can get quite crowded with teenagers at the weekend. The selection of stock is impressive- it doesn't particularly wow me, but I'm probably 10 years older than their average customer! (wow, that's depressing...) The bag selection is great and very up-to-the minute with lots of tote bags and holdalls. I distinctly remember Lulu Rose being one of the first places I saw metallic bags and purses (before they were everywhere), so it's probably a good place to go if you want to jump on board with the latest fashion and accessory trends. In the past I have always thought the clothing was kind off the mark, but lately I've seen a couple of good old body-con dresses (who isn't selling them, seriously, they're everywhere?!) and some pretty cardigans in the window. I prefer Lulu Rose to Yoma, because I don't feel its masquerading as something more upmarket...what you see is what you get.

After much searching elsewhere, Lulu Rose was among my last options. Thankfully I managed to source a bag that was in the sale, reduced for £35 down to £16. There were perhaps half a dozen items that I considered buying, which is certainly better than the previous shops I had tried. Some of the clothes were a bit average, looking like Top Shop inspired items from 3 months previous. Still, I was able to find a good quality bag for a cheaper price than I would have expected.

Footasylum's branch in Brighton's Churchill Square in terms of overall feel is probably one of the…read morebetter branches of the footwear retailer (they sell some cool clothing too, not just footwear!) from the same owners of JD Sports, elsewhere in the mall, and I've visited some pretty pathetic branches in terms of that in the likes of Manchester and Sheffield Meadowhall. The store had a decent selection of items, some of which were at decent prices. My main issue with the store was the checkout area, which I found to be a little strange, with staff slow to dealing with customers and they just seemed to feel and look disinterested, there also wasn't a staff member visible on the shop-floor to help customers, which also delayed the customer experience and is an example of this. Potential to be one of the better Footasylum branches in terms of the look and feel of the store, but the potential to be one of the worst in terms of service. 2.5 - but more deserving of a two-star rating
