My husband and I came last night for the first time, just before closing (we didn't have a choice to come earlier). The staff was AWESOME. We talked to one of the two brothers and their father who owned the place (I was bummed to forget their names) and they were so beyond friendly and helpful! The food was soooooooo good. We had two lobster cakes, some white fish, Mac and cheese and some hush puppies. Wow we could barely make it home before eating it all! We also ordered a walleye to bring home and they got it all ready and packaged super fast. Really awesome place; even the other customers were super nice to us! Classic seafood market and hot food takeout counter. We had fried fish and baked fish along with assortment of sides Reasonably priced, fast service. The only trouble was calling to place the order. I am generally satisfied with my orders from Klein's, however, today I purchased 2 lbs of fried oysters and I noticed an EXCESSIVE amount of fried crumbs. That's usually ok to find some of the breading but the amount in this order was unacceptable considering the order was $46.99 plus $1.41 adm fee for using a debit card . The attached photis depict what was on the bottom of my order none of which is osyter, these are ALL crumbs. Just got off the phone with the store and was told "I don't know what to tell ya". Needless to say, I'm not happy with that response. BTW, the oysters were, as always, de-li-cious even though I feel I was charged for a lot of fried batter. read more

I've lived in Akron for almost five years and only recently discovered this local seafood market. I went in search of raw shrimp for our New Year's Eve seafood boil and they had exactly what I needed at a good price. The shrimp cooked up beautifully. Klein's does not sell sushi grade fish but they have many other fish selections, some whole, some filets. They even have the small boxes of seafood boil spices and frozen hush puppies. Kleins is so wonderful! Firstly, the neighborhood they're in leaves something to be desired. But. They have been around for decades, so don't let the surroundings scare you off. They have the absolute friendliest staff that is also incredibly knowledgeable and able to help with ideas, recipes, and suggestions. One thing I always go for, is the crawfish. My husband is a southern boy, and crawfish boils are something we like to do a couple times a year. At the register they also have a nice assortment of seasfood seasonings, boil mixes, and breadings, to coat your fish in to fry. The prices are reasonable, quality exceptional, and I love being able to support a local small business. They have even helped carry things to my car-- which is something I absolutely love. read more

If your are visiting out of state be aware thy are over priced, if they fry/cook for you has no flavor. They charge for condiments I am talking about the ketchup/ hot sauce packets you get from fast food chains .15C or .90C ridic. It appears to be in a predominantly black neighborhood and another way to keep the minority poor by charging 10x the amount you would pay anywhere else. They are very friendly which is a plus. I would not recommend due to high way robbery to say the least. read more

The food has always been good at Klein's; really good. The only reason I'm giving four stars instead of five is because of the extra charge for condiments even when placing large orders! If I'm spending over $100 for food I think there should be a certain allowance for condiments. read more

Flew into Akron from Dallas and went to Klein's. I got 1lb red snapper and wife catfish dinner. Both where really fresh and tasted good. Only thing I needed was some hoot sauce packets. read more

I recently purchased a bag of jumbo king crab legs for around 155 dollars just to get home cook half and realize a REALLY bad odor. LIKE REALLY BAD! like they were left out too long and then refrozen. my problem is, I purchased from here A LOT! when I just called they basically told me that they had no complaints so it was nothing they are going to do about selling me bad food. I would not be spending any more money here. As you shouldn't either. Just informing everyone because, I could have been seriously sick if I would have fully consumed them and they basically said oh well we got your money. Not a good look. Where else except Klein's are you going to get this quality of fish... for this price! Fresh & delicious! If you get one of the dinners you get 3 nice pieces of fish, better than most all other of the local restaurants and a fraction of the cost! The hush puppies are decent but the fried okra is amazing! My family celebrates a traditional Italian Christmas Eve - meatless and everyone MUST eat 13 dishes. I had struggled for years after moving to Akron to find a fish market until, about 3 years ago, a co-worker told me about Klein's. First off, it's not in the best part of Akron. I'm saying this living in quiet West Akron, but this place is not ideal. Second, I second the review that defined this place as "ripe". When I was walking in there today, a young boy was leaving with an actual clothespin on his nose. Funny, but 30 seconds later he would have been offered $5 for that little life-saver! The selection inside, however, is pretty good. Lots of fresh fish, shellfish, etc. My load for the day was sea scallops, shrimp, squid, crab and smelts. All priced where I expected it and service was prompt and attentive. For a Northeast Ohio fish market, this is good - although this would be considered the coastal equivalent of Rally's. read more

I really think Klein is getting undeserved scores. I haven't seen a fish monger this far into the Midwest that compares. They sell real, never frozen, beautifully fresh whole fish. They also sell fillets, which I can't vouch for, because why would you buy fillets when you have the opportunity to buy something that is visibly fresh, with a nice clear eye and no fishy smell? If you don't want to deal with filleting on your own, they are professionals and will scale and fillet anything in the case. I also think that the seasonality of the whole fish demonstrates their commitment to freshness--you can only get certain items at specific times of year because that's when they're available. I think a lot of the comments I see here are strange--for a fish market, it's not smelly. It's smells like fish and ocean, but never rotten. Honestly, I have a feeling that the reviews are coming from people who are used to buying their fish at the supermarket, where there's no smell because the previously frozen fillets are still thawing in the case. This is a real fish market for people who know what to do with something beyond salmon, tuna or cod, or trout. By the way, they do sell those fish, and make a mean smoked trout. Arr! It gave me scurvy! Ok, no scurvy over here, but, I did have some issues. The place is connected to a little take-out place that sells fried versions of the seafood they sell fresh and it seems like they have a nice little thing going on. I walked into the "raw seafood" side because I wanted some fresh seafood. It was ripe in there. I mean, I expected to smell fish, but this...my senses didn't know whether to freak out or shut off. We got red snapper and crawfish. The red snapper was filleted for us, which ended up being two shredded flaps of fishmeat, scales, and bones. That was a throw-away even after cleaned and cooked. It just tasted past its prime. However, the crawfish were awesome. I was able to take the pre-seasoned, precooked crawfish(from China, sadly), and dump them into a crawfish boil with corn and sausage and potatoes and Old Bay for maybe 5 minutes (since they were already cooked) and they came out perfect. Not a single mushy or flat tail. For the crawfish, I will return, but nothing else. read more

Definitely know you are in a fish market. The smell hits you coming through the door. That's what an enclosed fish market smells like. If you take some time you can find some really fresh fish. They will filet them and send them next door to be fried or broiled for you. Add some hush puppies and you got lunch baby. read more

I recently ordered chicken livers like I always do "please do not fry hard" Because I was at work, a co-worker picked them up. THEY WERE BURNT!. THEY TASTED AND SMELLED BURNT. When I called to complain, Tim said, they were not because he cooked them, and that there was nothing that could be done about it. So sorry to read that other reviewers didn't have such great experiences at Klein's. I've lived in the Akron area for over 20 yrs and only just went there for the first time a few weeks ago. I wish I had known about it sooner. Does it smell like fish? Of course. Consider: have you ever been to a Chinese restaurant and it smelled like hamburgers, or do you go to a crab shack on the coast hoping to smell beef stew? I hope not. It is not a new facility, and it's not fancy, but it did seem clean. Klein's is not in the best area of the city. It's in a strange little area not on the main drag. Since they've been open in the same location for a very long time, this obviously works for them. The clientele was varied, which I think is a plus. There were quite a few customers coming & going while we were there. Prices seemed decent, but since I don't usually buy seafood from the grocery, I cannot make a direct comparison. There was plenty of staff on hand at each counter to help. We purchased scallops, shrimp, and halibut which made great grilled skewers after marinating overnight. We also bought some red snapper, which they fileted for us. The snapper took about 4-5 minutes in the smoker & needed no seasoning besides a little sprinkle of sea salt. For all of this, we paid about $30. I will definitely go back to Klein's. Don't forget to go across the street to DiFeo's meats. read more

I was looking for some fresh seafood. I walked into this amazing place where service was fast, workers were polite, it couldn't get any better. When you looked through the glass containers displayed, you could see either a whole fish not skinned, or several peices of the fish. The types of fish varied, but their were tons. First of all, everything was a decent price. I didn't want to spend to much, and I got a lot of fish, for only $25. I fried it in some delicious seasoning and breading, and it was the best fish I had tasted in a very long time. I had never tasted something so fresh, and mouthwatering. read more
