The South Branch of the River Raisin meanders through the park year round. Birds are singing and small wild animals getting a drink of water. During the fall, the leaves turn yellow, orange and red. It's our favorite park in Adrian. The park is a part of the Kiwanis hiking trail that starts at the southern part of Adrian to the town of Tecumseh, MI, about 10 miles away. The part is well maintained. During the winter time, it is covered with several inches of snow. The parking lot is behind the Lenawee County Jail, manned by the Lenawee County Sheriff.

Mary J. McCann Park is on the east side of Warner Road, south of Bemis and north of Willis. It's a…read morebit hidden by all the trees, but the entrance is well marked with a sign and a fence. There is no parking lot, per se, but there is room to park about a half dozen cars. There will be mosquitoes as soon as you emerge from your car, so be prepared. Also bring your hat and sunscreen, if it's a hot and sunny day, because even though this place looks shady and dark from the road, most of it is open prairie. It's only about a quarter mile through the buggy part of the park. Stay on the trail to avoid the poison ivy, which is a native species, so no complaining--it's a food source for luna moth larvae--did you know that? If you keep heading due east, you will emerge into a very open and sunny part of the park. There are signs to identify some of the trees and flowers you will see there. Some of the signs identify non-native species. I wish they would distinguish. Just a little detail that we nature freaks would notice. There are mowed paths all over the open part of the park. Here and there, you will find plantings of native wildflowers. In the very center of the park, there is a pavilion, but no tables. I think the chimney provided as a home for chimney swifts is a neat idea. Where did they nest before there were chimneys? Hollow trees, I suppose.

What we really liked was the pair of waist-high metal funnels that allow you to play the telephone game. Each person stands at one and speaks into the bell. You are about 25' apart, but you can hear each other like you are whispering into each others' ears. Neat-o! Over by the lake, it's too mosquito-ey to linger for long. You are basically behind the back yards of several homes, so be considerate. We also walked out to the driveway. There seems to be a trail head across the street (the other side of Platt) but don't go over there. The poison ivy is in the lawn itself. It will require more mowing before it gets killed back enough. There is a large, open area at this park that would be perfect for radio controlled planes. Close to lots of other parks that ring the same lake. It's called Ford Lake, but don't confuse it with the Ford Lake near Belleville. The name comes from the fact that Henry Ford converted the old mill on this lake for auto production.

There's alot of entrance points and the trail does go far; on the day i was exploring you had people more riding compared to walking. The Kiwanis Trail is an eight mile paved recreational trail for biking, jogging and walking built…read moreon an old railroad bed between the Michigan cities of Tecumseh and Adrian. The trail runs through beautifully secluded woodlands with plenty of welcomed shade on a hot summer day. As with most "Rails-to-Trails" in this part of the state, the trail runs over mostly flat terrain which my wife and I found perfect for cruising. I also noticed that several sections of the trail had been re-paved since the last time I rode this trail making for some very smooth riding. As the trail enters the college town of Adrian, the surroundings become more urban as the Kiwanis Trail becomes the Riverview Trail in the city proper. In this section, the trail runs through Trestle Park with its historic amphitheater - home of the Adrian City Band. Convenient parking can be found at both trailheads: Trestle Park in Adrian and the intersection of Ives and Green just south of Tecumseh. Today we thoroughly enjoyed riding the full 17 miles back and forth between Tecumseh to Adrian...a 5-star ride all the way.

A Vietnam Veterans Memorial has been developed at the site which is overseen by a special Heck Park Committee, which has members from the Park Commission, the County Board, and the Vietnam Veterans Chapter 142. Heck Park has Parking, Restrooms, Pavilion seating approximately 30 adults, Trails, Playground, Basketball court, Sled Hill, Veteran's Memorial, Charcoal operated cooking grills available but has no electrical outlets.
