I pulled into the gravel lot in front of the Buy Rite and had trouble finding a spot to park. Clearly they were busy for lunch. The exterior and interior don't do much to provide ambiance per se. The interior is part general store, part restaurant, and part screen printing business. Everyone in front of me was ordering fried chicken (and being told they'd have it in 12-15 minutes). But me? I was there for a hot dog. I ordered one all the way with no onions, fries, and got a fountain drink. I stood around the screen printing machines until my number was called then took my order to the car as all of the inside seating was taken up. Five people who, seemingly knew each other, all sitting at different tables. Didn't leave much room for anybody else. The hot dog was ok. They had forgotten to leave the onions off. The chili had good flavor but the slaw was boring. The fries didn't have any seasoning on them. All in all, just a disappointing experience for me. "You been there?" I asked my buddies. Nope. "It's not just a convenience store, right?" Shrugs. It's Friday. It's July 1st. Why not celebrate the coming holiday with America's culinary gift to the planet: the triple cheeseburger. I called it in, the very polite lady on the phone took my order. "You want everything on that, baby?" Yes, ma'am. Kitchen sink. I'm on my way. Sam's is a place where everyone knows everyone. It's a grill, but it's also part of a community. And when I rolled in, I felt like part of it. I waited a while, because the day of the week and the month meant everyone was getting takeout. I had a great side chat with the other guys waiting, and watched them pay out all three burgers and grill them. First time here, I said. "Oh, you'll be back, baby. You sure you want slaw and chili?" Of course, I let them know that there is no other proper way to dress a burger, and they agreed. I brought my greasy brown paper bag of goodness (after grabbing my combo soda out of the cooler) back home. Everything was wrapped tightly in wax paper, and after hurriedly tearing it open, I was rewarded with just a classic Carolina burger, stacked high and falling over under its own mass. Not greasy, not gooey, just freaking delicious. The fries were wrapped in a little paper boat, crisp crinkles. This is another Oxford gem. Friendly, not fast, just great food. It's hidden in plain sight, and I'm not sure why people aren't crushing this place weekly.

It quickly became overwhelming and even through there was several things we wanted to buy, including fresh meat, we decided the smell could easily seep into the food through the plastic wrap so didn't get anything. I spoke to the young girl at the check out and said, you must feel like you're high when you leave if this smell here is like this all the time. She agreed it was pretty strong, but after a while she gets used to it. I was so concerned for her safety, not knowing if there was a leak somewhere in the building that could cause an explosion, that I called 911 and reported it to the Person county EMS. They said they'd go out to take a look to which I replied, better safe than sorry. Hopefully whatever it is will get resolved because an hour later my eyes are burning and I'm coughing. There was never an issue like this when it was Twins, so don't know what's up.

Discussing my passion for great dogs, my aunt mentioned a grill in the back of a convenience store in Butner. I set out around lunch time one Monday to see if her recommendation would make the cut. Her food has always been fabulous, but some time in the 80s, she married a man who preferred canned biscuits to her perfectly made biscuits of love. But I'm digressing again, as I'm apt to do. Anyway, I had to ask her a couple of times to be sure I'd know I was in the right place. The convenience store has gas pumps and apparently a car wash. In fact, the only signage I could find was "Tom's Car Wash" along the side of the building. There is a restaurant attached, but that's not the grill I'm reviewing. Once inside, it's a typical convenience store, circa 1975-80. It's not an old country store, and it's not a bright and shiny Family Fare. It's local and friendly. Lots of folks seemed to know each other, and to be honest, I probably knew at least five or so folks they know, but I decided to be in cognito. The grill is in the back. It's mostly to go, but there are two tables. If you want sweet tea, you can purchase it at the grill, but if you want a Coke or anything else, you have to purchase that at the convenience store check-out and buy your food independently. The grill serves several sandwich-type items and a main dish or two a day. I was there for the hot dogs, though the idea of home-made chicken and dumplings was rather tempting. Their hot dogs are regularly the best priced I've seen in the Triangle in a LONG time. Less than 1.50 per hot dog, including mustard, slaw, chili, and onions. But I hit it just right. On Mondays, hot dogs are just 99 cents! I can't say these were the best hot dogs in the world but they are pretty darn good, and the price just can't be beat. The location is a bit out of the way, but if you find yourself in Butner with a hankering for a darn good Carolina dog, you know where to go.

I was curious as to what was being served, so I approached. I tried the hibachi chicken and shrimp with rice, which was delicious. The portions were plentiful, and the food was freshly cooked. They were busy, so there was a bit of a crowd and very few pleasantries upon approaching due to the pace of trying to get people in and out. They gave me a pager to hold onto until my order was ready. The person in the truck advised me on how many feet it could reach. I waited in my car until I was buzzed. I will try SoulBachi again.
