Ooooh I love a good buffet - and a cheap one too! Kitchen Workshop is a great spot, that I feel is kind of a hidden gem in Melbourne. I had certainly never come across it before I looked on the Crown Casino Website, but as soon as I did I made a reservation. The room is light and bright, and filled with so many diferent food options, including Asian, a carving station, Seafood, fresh pastries, and of course my favourite, dessert! The food is quite good for the prices, and is fresh ie. it hasnt been sitting there for hours upon hours. The other great thing is that all the buffets are manned, so if you have any questions or would like anything on particuar, the staff are on hand to help you out. A perfect inexpensive buffet, great for families.

A buffet is great, but if the food isn't always at its freshest, then it can be disappointing. That's what happened at Kitchen Workshop, too much dry food on offer. I think your dining experience will depend on what time of the day or night you go, which will determine the freshness of the food. The most outstanding part of the experience was the desserts, so many to choose from and all fresh and yummy.

You either love a buffet or your indifference to it. Let me say that I am mostly indifference to buffets so take my words with a grain of salt. I'll try to be unbiased as much as I can Pro - Kids eat free on public holiday, which is why we thought we'd try Kitchen Workshop ( however note that Public holiday charge is over $40 per adult). -There is a variety of dessert and mostly the servings are always topped up and the choices on offer is plenty. there is something for everyone, one of our favourite was the beautiful Pavlova. Other choices include chocolate fountain, various mousse, asian dessert, puddings and cakes. -The Asian food bar is excellent with some unusual buffet offerings as well as kids favourites, a variety of dishes that are hot, tasty, fresh and regularly topped. -Salad bar, Soup bar, Noodle bar, Roast bar, Prawn and Oyster bar, name your poison -Soft drinks and instant coffees are included in the price. -Tables and plates cleared away regularly and promptly and front cashier is very friendly, offering people a look around before deciding if they want to stay Cons - Drinks does not include juices or Cafe style coffee. Great if you love soft drinks, not so great for those who don't. - Oyster and Prawns are limited to half dozen/ a few hundred grams of serving per adult. Even Star City Casino buffet in Sydney is more generous than that. - This purely Depends on personal taste, but the 4 of use found ourselves walking past most of the offerings and only finding about 2/3 dishes each that looked to our taste. We tried most of the dessert but didn't find many of the dishes too interesting. -Staff service is inconsistent, some were friendly others were very very grumpy. All in all, buffet is always a good value if you feel up for a big meal, the food seems to be fresh. Make sure to check the price before you go as they seem to have different pricing and offers most night.

Food tastes like it's been sat there too long. Some of the deserts that are supposed to be warm are cold, others are just plain disgusting.

Breakfast they say, is the most important meal of the day, it gives you energy, gives you clarity…read moreto get through the day, it sets the tone. So finding the perfect breakfast, well let's face it, is reality easy in a city such as Melbourne. So many cafes and restaurants offering their take on poached eggs, smashed avocado sprinkled with the latest super food grain and freshly juiced kale and ginger juice makes it a smorgasbord of choices for today's customer. Hotel restaurants around the world have been offering up a breakfast buffet since the dawn of time, with a large degree of failure. The biggest challenge being keeping the offering hot and serving up a variety that keeps them a step a head of their competition. Collins Kitchen in the Grand Hyatt Melbourne offers up this time honoured tradition and where others have missed the mark the Hyatt have not only exceeded the mark but have set the barre to new heights. Firstly this is a grand restaurant overlooking the plain trees of Russell Street, with warm and inviting furniture that lets you know you're in a five star dining room in a world renowned hotel, a perfect place for the perfect breakfast. The major difference here is how they offer you the food, there is not a trestle table or Bain marie in sight, instead they have four show kitchens, each with a dedicated chef, either cooking to order your choice of eggs, be it poached or a wonderful fluffy omelette, or continually cooking crispy bacon, sauté mushrooms or an array of dim sum. Fresh fruit, an assortment of freshly baked bread and a chef offering to squeeze you a super juice, is awaiting you in another kitchen. There's a deli with smoked salmon, turkey and ham on offer with a great selection of cheese and crackers. If that doesn't fill you up then you'll need to head over to what one can only describe as heavens kitchen. Freshly made waffles and pancakes with fruit compotes and cream. Pastries and cakes galore will give anyone with a slight sugar addiction the fix they need. The only way to make this experience better would be to offer ice cream for the waffles, but that's just me being slightly greedy. This is not a place for a quick breakfast, to get the full experience you need to spend a couple of hours here and for $42 is certainly value for money.

High Tea at Hyatt So…read moreI just came back from the Hyatt high tea and I had a lovely time. The three of us were given two stands that displayed 9 sandwiches and 8 cakes. We were also given 10 scones and more than enough cream and jam (raspberry & fig) to accompany. The setting here at the Hyatt is beautifully laid out, the table settings are good quality and room oozes of class and style. The service was fantastic, the waiter for our table was extremely polite and professional. I found the servings to be very generous here, we had so many left over cakes-unfortunately they do not offer take away services, and so it's a bit of a waste if you don't finish it. The sandwiches included an egg salad, aged waygu beef and smoked salmon. The cakes included a chocolate mud, chocolate opera, pistachio sponge, cheesecake and strawberry mousse. I was also surprised by how many scones they gave us, did they really except us to eat that many? Overall this was a very pleasant afternoon, the ambience of the place was quite and relaxing and the prices were around $30ish per person. I will definitely head back here soon, perfect place for afternoon tea.

I think I'm…read moregetting to the point where these restaurants have been more disappointing than they have been 'great finds'. My son got the tonkatsu (breaded pork, but it had a slightly different name here). Normally this dish is served with a plum sauce, but not here. We did ask, but I'm guessing something was lost in the translation because they brought back the tempura dipping sauce. The dish itself was good. Our daughter had the tempura, which was ok. There was shrimp and veggies. The biggest problem with this dish was eggplant....the batter on these was undercooked....this was not pretty, and when I took a bite the oil just oozed out in my mouth. Our banquet included saki. My complaint here is normally this is served with the bottle in warm water to keep the saki warm, but this just came on its own. It wasn't long before the saki went cold. The soup was nice, the Goya was again, okay. The best part of e meal was our sushi....little California rolls and salmon. The salmon was just beautiful and the California rolls had different seeds on the outside that really gave it a nice flavour. The service was good, the food came out at a good pace. But overall they loose it in the quality of the food and preparation. With all the other Japanese restaurants around you can find a better place.

The environment was super classy, with high ceilings and marble walls and floors. The servers were polite and attentive majority of the time. There were a few times we had to flag them down to take away our used plates and refill our water and wine. The was an extremely wide selection of food. The categories include: salad, cold cuts, cheese, cold seafood (oyster, crab, lobster, shrimps, etc), carving station (turkey, ham, roast beef, lamb), Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, dessert (chocolate fondue, ice cream, cakes). I wasn't able to try out all the food, but the dishes that stood out was the halved lobster with melted herb butter, the stir fried clam, baked salmon, roasted ham, raw oyster, Queenland tiger shrimp and the peppermint chocolate ice cream. The disappointing dishes include turkey (dry and rough), roast beef (dry), king crab (very mildly sweet to tasteless), roasted cauliflower (way to mushy), stir fried asparagus (tough and fibrous). Also, the sushi and sashimi selection was disappointing and the sashimi did not look fresh. The price of the wines were reasonable for a hotel restaurant. Overall, for ~AUD$200 (excluding alchohol) per person, I would say the buffet price is reasonable.

The spicy and sweet pork with crunchy port skin was 5/5. The first time i have seen a white chocolate fountain and it was delicious! They also had a milk chocolate fountain. The ambiance was beautiful with natural light and look very clean. The low point was asking for hand sanitizer, which they provided and allowed us to keep at our table. The only item I had to ask for so not low just not immediately available. Will visit again and already told my friends about it. We were celebrating our Anniversary and they brought us chocolate that read happy anniversary.

Melba has always been my favourite buffet in Melbourne. It's always fresh, plentiful and varied…read more They label things well and there's truely something for everyone. They do great Indian food, great sushi, beautiful pastas and salads and fish and the most delicious desserts. It's pricey, but I think there's definite value here. The staff are always friendly and helpful and it's a perfect spot if you have a special occasion or just a treat for a change for lunch or dinner. HOWEVER ... that being said. We just came here again for the first time in a while for a very special occasion. We made the booking for 8 people. When we booked over the phone, they didn't once say that since we are coming for lunch and having guests, the best thing to do would be valet park with the hotel for a flat rate of $19. No. They didn't tell us that. Instead, we paid $75 - yes $75 - for just over three hours of parking with Wilson. It is daylight robbery and should be regulated. The hotel lost that business by not disclosing it to us, and instead our money went to Wilsons. But the thing is, when they know you're hosting guests, the least they can do is verbalise that on the phone with you at the time. Otherwise, the day went smoothly (other than the idiot waiter who told us our table was the one "over there with all the big balloons" on it after we urged him to keep it subtle as the guest of honour was with us as a surprise ...), and I recommend the lunch here for sure. Just be sure to NOT park downstairs unless you valet.
