Nicest restaurant in Battle Creek. The quality of food is unmatched locally. I especially love the Wagu. The pasta dishes are always excellent as well. The wine list is very good and I especially love the Malbec blend which I've not see anywhere else. They also have a good beer list with a few unique brews. And to top it off they always have several excellent desserts to chose from. The interior of the restaurant is very classy and cozy. A bit small but not overly crowded. We were in town for a meeting and treated to dinner here by the team members... we were able to squeeze in early, as I heard this place gets very busy! Very comfortable ambiance. Super clean... and an open kitchen in the middle of the restaurant is a perfect touch. It also allows for personally thanking the chefs for what is sure to be an outstanding dinner! ;) Everybody's food was obviously cooked with a ton of 'love' and was super fresh. Wow, this place is great. The atmosphere was simple and casual, but nice enough. The service, the menu, and most importantly the food were are excellent. By far the best Chicken Marsala I've ever had out. The dessert was...well, predictably incredible, too. The place gets five stars and earns every one of them. Seriously. It is now a mandatory stop for dinner whenever I am traveling within 50 miles or so, which sadly will be far too infrequently. Yes, it was just that good. read more

Went there for a special occasion. We had a friendly greeting when we walked in the door, and as we walked by the open kitchen, we were greeted by the kitchen staff. Our waitress was very nice and explained the specials. We ordered a bottle of wine and cheese appetizer. I wish we would have taken a picture of it was delicious. The waitress, Alexis, was outstanding. The food was very good. The bread with oil at the start needed oil! The bread was great, but the oil was lacking seasoning. They were very understanding with me not wanting polenta with the bass so they subbed parmesan risotto. The bass needed salt. My husband said the chicken marsala was really good. It had a ton of mushrooms in it. He started with the mushroom soup amd LOVED it. I got the baked goat cheese a d we both loved it. Overall, we would visit again. staff and service very good and attentive! The mushroom risotto was a huge dissapointment over cooked too much liquid and smelled off(almost like vomit). I could not eat 5 bites. the scallops were not cleaned properly I got gritty sand in my mouth and a rubbery (foot,muscle) was left on one of them. the seat and cook of the scallops was on point but the prep was poor. the cocktails, crab cakes and lobster Mac were very good. they could have offered to take the risotto off my tab since it was not eaten. they did not and I was not going to make a scene while trying to have a nice time with my wife. read more

We haven't been for dinner yet. But we tried brunch and it was fantastic! they just recently started opening on Sundays from 9 to 1 for brunch. The menu has lots of different options on it. You can get anything from a traditional breakfast to huevos rancheros to shrimp and grits. And we tried a little bit of everything! The wait staff was wonderful even with the place being packed. They truly seem to live the place and the customers. All the dishes we had were awesome and we especially loved the huevos rancheros and the French toast. I don't know what kind of bread they use but it was so good. We almost ordered a second helping for the table while we sipped on our drinks. And the drinks were yummy. Mimosas all around which you can get in different flavors and then other not as traditional choices. The pours were generous and it was lovely and cozy to sit and sip with our group. The food was OK at least the dish that I had, but for the cost of the meal I guess I expected something different. That is not to say that I would not recommend this place to family and friends, I think they have a product that some would find amazing. For me not so much. I wanted to write an update on Kitchen Proper because of my most recent experience, which is one I will never forget. Kitchen Proper truly has the best seared chicken I have ever had, and I love pairing it with a rigatoni and marinara pasta. One night I order rigatoni with marinara and chicken and specifically asked for no parmesan cheese. I also ordered a sorbet. My father went to get the meal and when he came back I was disappointed to find that my order was wrong. They had put parmesan on my pasta and had neglected to include my sorbet. I called Kitchen Proper and explained the situation. They were incredibly apologetic and took full responsibility for the error on the order. They then offered to do something I never expected. They offered to re-make the meal (with no additional charge) and then deliver it to my house! I took them up on the offer and within 25 minutes my meal was at my house, with some bread and olive oil in another container, and with the sorbet. The worker once again apologized and said that I did not need to give my other dish back. Kitchen Proper went to the most extreme lengths to fix an error that they easily could have blamed on me. They apologized and did everything that they could to rectify the problem at hand without inconveniencing the costumer. Even though this experience started out as one that could have ruined my perception of Kitchen Proper, they took all the productive steps to make the costumer happy. After this experience, my statement still stands that this is the best restaurant in Battle Creek, not only for their delicious food, but also their unmatched customer service! read more

Been waiting to try Kitchen Proper, and it didn't disappoint. We had the goat cheese appetizer skillet, and it was fantastic. Not typically my thing, goat cheese, but with the nuts and berries, pretty darn amazing. Girlfriend had monk fish, and she really enjoyed it. She managed to share a couple bites with me, and I was impressed. Had never tried monk fish before, but it was very tasty. Huge filet, cooked perfectly with a great, buttery taste and texture. I had the chicken marsala. Very rich, lots of flavor. The chicken was cooked well and the noodles were not overdone. Lots going on but everything went together very well. Cheesecake for dessert was different, and by different I only mean different texture than I'd ever had before. Very smooth, light and almost buttery. Overall a great flavor and the crust was amazing. The wait staff was attentive and took great care of us from start to finish. We apparently slid in under the wire, because as soon as we got our drinks, the place started filling up, to include a group of 20+, yet they still managed to make things happen smoothly. We'll certainly be back for more... Lot's to try, and based on the first visit, we're pretty sure whatever we order will be great. read more

If I could give this place 6 stars I would! Husband, son (9) and I walked in without reservation - wanted a nice dinner before the baseball game. Waitstaff were more than welcoming and set us up front of the window seat. We were so lucky to get in because it got busier as we ate! The whipped gouda with bacon and caesar salad were phenomenal! My son had the grilled chicken and the green beans. It was perfectly grilled - he loved it. Hubby and I split the whitefish main, with risotto and we should have had a second because it was the highlight for me! I saw another patron with the sauteed scallops and mussels- will definitely try that next time. It was a fabulous dinner. The staff were thoughtful, quick and allowed us the time to have a nice family meal. We will be back! read more

Kitchen Proper offered a fantastic experience! I couldn't be more impressed with the service, food, and decor. We walked in about 30 minutes to close, noticed the open kitchen concept and took the chance. We were greeted and served with kindness. The food was delicious. I highly recommend the salmon fettuccini Alfredo to pasta lovers. The sauce evenly bound to perfectly cooked al dente noodles while the salmon sat on top cooked medium. If you're in need of a sweet treat, try the flourless chocolate cake. It's flavor is similar to the inside of a truffle. Keep in mind that the restaurant has limited space (80 person capacity) but does take reservations. We ended up leaving about 30 minutes after Kitchen Proper closed and there was absolutely no rush to leave. The cooks were prepping for the next service, waitresses cleaning up, and other customers socializing. Went to Malia, found Kitchen Proper in its place. OK, so we clearly don't get to BC very often, but this was a happy find! It was Kid 1's birthday, and she celebrated with lobster ravioli, most of which went into the belly, with a couple leftover to take home. Declaration: delicious! Kid 2 ordered a side "nuts and berries salad" with a diver scallop add-on. The scallop was priced at $5, a bit of sticker shock, but it was perfectly cooked and K2 wanted more. (Sorry, kiddo, not tonight!) The Hubster ordered the duck, which was cooked to order and flavored nicely with mustard. The pairing (cabbage) went perfectly with it. So many duck entrees are sweet, almost cloying, and this was a lovely change of pace. I ordered the beef ragu, which was a substantial serving of tender braised and shredded beef in a classic ragu sauce over pappardelle pasta. Sweet mother of all yum! (Don't pass this over, it is not your standard "pasta with meat sauce"!) I forced myself not to eat it all (though was tempted). I'm going to have a fabulous lunch tomorrow and make the office jealous! We started with the hummus plate, which had both grilled and pickled veggies and pita that was tender inside and crispy outside. Beautifully plated and enough for 4 to share before dinner (though more pita would have been nice!) Had to skip dessert, since there was birthday cake waiting at home. Next time... Did I mention that the service was wonderful and literally everyone welcomed us on the way in and thanked us for coming on the way out? Felt like royalty!
