I had heard stories from family members, but never experienced anything myself until recently. Longer story below, but the short version is that I asked for a replacement perception, and the very first response from the self described office manager was "You're a grown adult and should know better than to lose it." I had no previous contact with her for her to respond like that. I was flabbergasted by the response and entered the clinic to confront her about her statement and was bombarded by accusations of abusing my medications, threatened to have police called, all while just standing at the window waiting to talk to the doctor. I was dismissed as a patient due to "disrespect towards the staff." Apparently South Shore Medical has no concerns for their client base, and allows their staff to talk to clients however they please. I have been a patient of doctor Dr Rooney's for nearly a year, but several of my family members have been his patients for many years. I had recently had an appointment to refill my medication, I am prescribed Adderall which helps me with my studies in nursing school. I received 3 months worth of prescriptions, but didn't need to fill them immediately because I had a majority of my last prescription remaining. When I did finally run out, I was unable to locate where I had put my prescriptions but thought I could easily have them replace since they had replaced an expired prescription with ease in the past. When I arrived at the clinic, the receptionist explained that the policy prevented her from replacing the prescriptions, and my only option was to schedule a new appointment. I wasn't happy to hear about the policy I wasn't aware of, but I scheduled the new appointment and left. When I got to my car I did one more pass to see if I could find the papers, but I was unable to. Because it was the week of finals, I was on my way to a study session and would not have benefited from it as much as if I had my prescribed medication, so I decided to call back into the office to see if there was any way they may be able to help me. When the girl picked up the phone I explained to her that I had just been inside, but I was hoping there was someone that could authorize at least one prescription because I was studying for finals. She responded by saying "No that's not our policy, you are a grown adult and should know better than to lose these things." I was immediately angered and hung up the phone to speak with her in person. I walked back into the clinic, and when I confronted her, I was immediately insulted several times, told I should know better, I was taking narcotics, I could be selling my prescriptions, she wouldn't listen to any responses. She had an answer for everything, including how apparently pharmacies don't check ID's when filling narcotics so I could sell them to anyone, and how the doctor had bent over backwards to replace my prescription last time. That is until she found out the prescription that was replaced was expired and their policy allowed for that. When I asked to speak with the doctor, I was refused and threatened with the police being called. When I asked why I was never made aware of their policy against replacing prescriptions I was handed a copy of the controlled drug contract I signed which stated they where not responsible for lost drugs, and prescription would not be filled at night or on the weekends. When I said told her I didn't want to replace lost drugs, I need a reprint of a prescription, she told me "As a nursing student I should know that a drug and a prescription are the same thing." When I told her "As a nursing student I know a drug is a medication, a pill, and a prescription is a piece of paper allowing me to received the drug. They are not the same thing." I was asked to leave. They have my pharmacy on record and can easily check if my prescriptions have been filled or not, but they refused.

While I knew the lab was across the street from Main Campus, I did make one wrong turn before I found where I was supposed to go. They could really use numbers on the buildings to help navigate people. There was only a half dozen people in the waiting area in a huge space that could easily hold hundreds. I checked in at the main desk with two friendly, kind and communicative women. All of my check ins with receptionists have all been positive, and informative/helpful. I completed my urinalysis collection on site and waited to be called. I turned in all my DIY tests and sat to have my blood drawn. I verified my information about a hundred times, but it also helped distract me from the needle. No one likes needles, really. I had 5 vials taken and when she was wrapping up my arm she chose a teal tape to match my shirt. On the previous Monday, the phlebotomist picked pink to also match my shirt. It's the little things that go a long way to make us feel human, rather than a number. Again, I was in and out in no time and felt that I was on the right path to taking care of my own health.

If I could give less than one star, I would. Around 2001, my father started out going to a doctor…read morenamed Stewart for a chronic injury sustained during boxing, but would have to get a referral to go see them. They were prescribing him 90 lortab tablets a month and he was managing his pain and there were no serious addiction problems at that time. Around 2002, he had to see this thing for a referral and this thing suggested "why not skip the referral and just come to me?" as it wrote my father out for a prescription of 90 percocet tablets (much more powerful than loratab). My father, lacking self-control after having lost his father was more than happy to take them. Over the next 7 years, he bumped him up from 90 percocets to 120 percocets and 90 oxycontin 80mg tablets a month. Then, when that wasnt enough, he would write him out for 120 percocets, 120 xanbars, and 90 morphine 200mg tablets. Needless to say, our lives spun out of control with my fathers addiction and this thing was more than happy to perpetuate it. I was always the one going in to get my fathers prescriptions because he turned into a recluse and the way he and his staff would treat me were nothing short of disrespectful. They didn't care that I had gray hairs at 17 or that the stress was killing us all (this was no secret). The only thing he would offer was a half-hearted suggestion of going into in-patient therapy and when my father said that wouldn't work for him, continued to write death on a prescription pad with no other course of action. It was almost like he would forget we were in the throes of the worst addiction I have ever seen the next month and kept on writing. Once, when I went for help, his nurse told me he was out on vacation and he walked out of the back right after she said that. I was a child and was doing what my father told me and thinking this man was an angel when he would "save" my father from withdrawals by writing out a prescription early. This thing was always nice and smiley about it all, too. Like they were cracking jokes about what a bunch of lowlives we were in the back room. The nurses treated us with utter contempt and were very nasty. I understand we must have seemed like a lowlife junkie family, but my father mever took a street drug other than marijuana. He never tried heroin, crack, meth, or any drugs you could get on the streets. His only experience with drugs and addiction came straight from this things pen and paper. The happiest day of my life was when he died and no other doctor would write my father for the amount he was asking. Our lives changed for the better and my father to this day will not even touch a tylenol. He didn't even need all these pills! Rot in pieces and I hope you didn't make the worms puke.
