During a meeting with my school counselor and other students who needed academic support, Damian called me his "best friend." After I thought everyone had left, I spoke privately with my counselor, only to realize Damian was still listening to our conversation and waiting for me. I reported the situation to the dean, but nothing was done. I am also deeply concerned that Damian reportedly burned another student with a lighter and was not expelled. This incident was dismissed as minor, which is alarming. Students deserve to feel safe, and serious incidents involving harassment and physical harm should never be brushed aside. I hope the school takes student safety and reports of misconduct seriously.

The school is diverse with students of all backgrounds. There is a huge field for sports. As part of the curriculum, students are allowed to work in order to gain experience. The work days are on Fridays and they are dropped off at their employer's office and picked up at the end of the day and returned to school. This is a great way for students to gain experience and begin building a strong work ethic as well as a great resume. Because this is an all boy's school, events with other schools (all girl's) are held. Such events include dances through out the year. Verbum Dei is a great alternative for families who want to guarantee their child's success and who want to ensure that their student will get the most out of their education in a low-income area.

All they do is scream throughout the day. Sometimes the screaming is blood-curdling. I once had a visiting relative comment on this and they thought that the students were being attacked in some way. They weren't joking and were genuinely concerned to the point they thought we should contact law enforcement. I had to remind them that they do this every day, it continues after school in the after-school programs. Once, as I was going for a walk by the school, a student, possibly separated from his gym class made a very crude and offensive sexual remark at me (an adult) relating to oral. There were zero adults present and I had no idea how to report this as I was very far from the entrance of the school which is on Firestone. Not very long ago, about 2-3 months ago, a lone student behind the fence was just yelling, "n-er, n-er!!!" repeatedly for close to two minutes straight. The parents are self-entitled. They will block your driveway when it's time to pick up a child. They have been in my own experience combative and aggressive. In the mornings, the parents will play their corridos and Banda music very loud in a residential area. There is a female teacher who uses her megaphone throughout the day to talk to her students during what sounds like gym period. She is the only teacher I hear! It becomes such a nuisance as I work from home. This school makes it very difficult to complain as there are no online forms to fill out, no way to submit any sort of documentation. If I call, they tell me I could only file a complaint in person during school hours and where's the time for that? In this day and age where it's easier to access things via the internet, you still have to go in person. I have lived by this school for decades. This is far from a decent school. It needs a lot of improvement and consideration for the residents that live around it. (For some reason this review shows I am located in San Francisco. I live and currently am located in South Gate.)
