    Fish tacos and Masala prawns

where do I start!? from the thoughtful and modern new interior design, to the carefully curated menu that represents everything that I love about Indian food, Kinu is incredible. We went on a Friday for a late lunch and practically ordered everything on the menu because we couldn't decide. the mango lassi was some of the best I've tasted, and everything from their take on fish tacos to the show stopping biriyani that came as full table-side performance from our server was incredible. Some of the dishes are as low as $8 which really was insane. They even catered for our 5 year old "fussy" eater by adapting one of their Naan selections. I cannot recommend them highly enough, we flew in from Toronto for a short visit and honestly I can't wait to eat here again when we come back (oh and as a side note, yes we did take alllll of our many leftovers back to the hotel and my husband and I ate them stone cold for breakfast - still just as delicious!)

    Paneer pakora was okay
    Christina L.

We ordered butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, plain naan, and paneer pakora. The pakora was lacking flavour and overall not that good, but the curries and naan were fresh and very well seasoned! The quality of the chicken in the curry was very good. The amount of rice that comes with the curry is really small though. We like our food spicy and they offer many different levels of spicy. We will be back!

Assortment of vegan dishes from lunch buffet
    Matt B.

I visited for the lunch buffet ($14.50 plus tax), having anticipated their many vegan options. My expectations were exceeded: they had tons of vegan options on offer for the buffet, including chana masala, dahl, aloo gobi, and a peas and cabbage dish. They also had veggie pakoras / bhaji and a salad bar with lots of vegan options. They even offered to do vegan naan (made with coconut oil instead of butter). The food quality was excellent, especially for a buffet; the aloo gobi and pea/cabbage dish were especially excellent. I left feeling full and happy. What a place -- I'll definitely return next time I'm in Victoria. Highly recommended.

All you can eat is a challenge waiting to be fulfilled, every time.

I haven't found any other all-you-can-eat buffets in Victoria that I like as much as Sizzling Tandoor. Their lunch buffet is open daily until 3 pm and it's $13 per person for an unlimited, delicious, Indian feast. To be quite honest, it's hard to eat a lot of anything because the naan and rice fill you up so much but I love having the opportunity to try a bunch of different curries and only pay one price. If you're heading over and time isn't an issue, I recommend going at about 2 pm on a weekday, as it's relatively empty but the service is still amazing. All of the staff that I've encountered there have been incredibly nice and conversational and a big plus is that they bring an entire large bottle of water to the table so that you can fill up your glass whenever you'd like, instead of waiting for your server to notice your sweat and pour you some more. For someone like me, who loves spice (even though spice doesn't love me...) this is perfect. For food suggestions, I highly recommend just trying a little bit of everything and seeing what you like the best. Personally, I'm a huge fan of their butter chicken because it has a good kick to it without being overwhelming (plus the chicken is super soft and delish) and I'm ALWAYS stoked to have more of their veggie pakoras. Sizzling Tandoor, you'll always have a special place in my heart.

Not very good. I would call it Westernized Indian food. Definitely wouldn't go back. Way over priced for quality too.

Our group arrived some time after 9pm on a Friday evening. I knew we were in for a treat as soon as we opened the door. There was an amazing aroma of spices that was waiting for us inside. The service was great! We were immediately sat at a large table near the entrance. We had a great view of the entire restaurant. Every table was taken, and I'm assuming it was their last dinner seating since it was past closing time. We were given samples of a pilsner from the local Hoyne Brewing Company as our guide was telling us about this unique restaurant with Kerala cuisine. It was so smooth and light. It actually pairs well with spicy food. The experience became magical after receiving this beautifully plated fish/rice ball. I love the presentation with the curry leaf on top. It's like a cross between an arancini and a fish curry. This was a flavor bomb. Absolutely delicious! It was crispy on the outside, and packed with a yummy filling of minced fish and curry spices on the inside. I've never had anything like it. I would go back to Victoria just to eat at this restaurant. It was that wonderful! I wish we had more time here. We were only in port for 3.5 hours. Fortunately, it was enough time to take this tour. I'm not sure we would have found it otherwise. I feel so fortunate that Cafe Malabar was one of the stops. The restaurant location is new to Mermaid Wharf. It was previously located in Victoria Public Market. I predict lots of good things happening for them in the future. The hype is real!

We had a high bar because we had just gone to an Indian restaurant in Chicago that was over the top good. Sizzling Tandoor met that bar. It was just as good as Chicago. Many reviews mentioned the Rogan Josh Lamb so we ordered that and balanced it off with Chicken Tikka Masala. We each ate half of each entree. A side of plain Naan completed the meal. We like hot food and we're going to order hot, but our server, Muskan, convinced us to get medium hot. It was perfect. Muskan was attentive but didn't hover. She engaged us in a nice convo after our meal and was very pleasant. The most difficult part was deciding which we liked better. The lamb won, but only by a small margin. Both were excellent.

As per the descriptions I read of this, the spices are subtle and mild unless you ask for extra heat. Which suites my taste. The vegetarian curry had a variety of vegetables and spices + choice of 3 vegetable dishes. My carrot, broccoli and beet choices were each special subtle and full flavors. Came with a mango yogurt and chutney and a crunchy garnish too. I upgraded my rice to Chamba which has a more interesting flavor and texture and I also ordered Raita extra because I love this tangy veggie-herb yogurt side. It all hit the spot and I would go back again next time I'm in the area. The container has to be handled carefully since two of the dishes were quite soupy but you could also order a sturdier cup in a larger serving. The owner was super friendly and also offered me little tastes of a couple other dishes while I decided. (It was a non busy early afternoon time) These include a couple meat options also available and were very good also. Easy parking, on north end of the town.

That should have been a warning, but we didn't take heed. First we got a dosa which was REALLY good! A spicy chutney with potatoes. We were off to great start. Wooohooo! Then came a curry with a delicious cashew sauce trying its very best to save the awful rubbery vegetables floating in it. Though the sauce made a valient effort, I am, in the end, absolutely convinced that those were frozen carrots and green beans...either that or they were actually rubber. Then, we hit rock bottom with the "green salad". Some badly chopped tasteless vegetables lined up like they are ready to be stir-fried and no dressing. I guess you were supposed to squeeze a lemon on them. Yum, yes please, I would love thick slices of raw onion with some lemon squeezed on it, who wouldn't? So take a dosa to go is my advice. Or go somewhere else. Fake flowers on the table, so maybe those carrots and green beans were made of rubber.
