She was hit by a child while having 3 adults in the same classroom "supervising" her. There was no exact explanation as to why they didn't witness the incident. My child had an "accident" and I always provided an extra pair of clothes as expected, but my child was left with her dirty clothes throughout the day. The hours state they are available for business at 7am and for me this was expressed how important it was to be their on time. The staff would walk in right at 7am and by the time I walked out from checking her in and everything else that needed to be done, i was 10 minutes behind schedule. I expressed thus to the director and we couldn't continue allowing more incidents occur and decided to not continue having our child be here. We requested our 2 weeks of daycares money that we had paid in advance to be refunded and they refused and said their policy stated we needed to give a months notice stating we were removing our child. We were furious to hear how the wanted us to leave our child there to have more incidents occur. A refund wAs not given back to us and were un-sympathetic. Bad experience from day one.

Everyone is very involved(parents and staff). They always communicate and make sure your child is on track and not falling behind. My daughter has a learning disability which they created a 504 plan. Mrs. Cosentino(the school principal) and Mrs. Somovia(vice principal) have been very supportive along with many other staff members. They are all very caring and doing everything in there power to help the kids succeed. I highly recommend this school to anyone looking for a private school education even if you are not catholic. As soon as my little one was consistent, they switched to the potty-trained rate. Thank you! They provide food and snacks (included in the price) and the school is opened as early as 7:30Am-5:30Pm. This was one of my favorite things about the school . We did the 8hr/day, 5d/wk option and it was amazing. My daughter was there for a year and we wish we could keep her there but she had to move on. My daughter learned a lot (zoo phonics, reading, writing, cutting, geography, biology, the planets, etc). My 4 year old surprised us with naming the continents and saying significant things about each continent. She recited the anatomy of an insect (including the thorax)! She told us about the flower's stamen, pollinators, chlorophyll, and photosynthesis! She's 4 years old! That's insane and we are super happy. You also get to keep a binder of your child's work and you can see the progression on top of the crafts and projects they send the kids home with. The holidays are festive too! She loved the school and didn't want to leave. The school provides a monthly newsletter, the curriculum for the month, and the lunch menu. As parents of a tough- minded child, the partnership we had with the teachers helped keep our little one's attitude on check at home. With that said, we gained friendships along the way. I started at SV in kindergarten, and the first few years weren't bad. I was a kid, I made friends, I was happy, and I learned the alphabet and how to read. Everything was going great. Then COVID hit, and everything just degraded from there. Our sports teams used to be very good, but now that whoever signs up gets in and the coaches are parent volunteers who kind of struggle, the teams had a habit of holding up unfortunate losing streaks. How the teams does is based on the athletic ability of its players. If they suck, the team will inevitably suck. I speak from the perspective of a former student-athlete who partook in some of the very few sports available. Then there is the case of the academics. On the bright side, my class was blessed with excellent junior-high teachers, much so our eight grade home room teacher. The way some of the teachers taught while I was in middle school made me so confused and unprepared for high school. I had to seek the help of my peers who had to learn the math lessons themselves and ask them for the formula. It also didn't help that math was and never will be my strong suit. Some of the staff got a little too comfortable and spoke to the student in ways their peers would to them. They are also double-sided like the edge of a sword, showing kindness one second and tearing you out the next. Some may say that acting in a way that makes the teacher seem like they are of the same generation of the student towards them would make them more comfortable with that teacher, but I strongly disagree. The staff are there as ADULTS who must be role models to these students who are still developing their prefrontal lobe. I became very uncomfortable with the way these teachers spoke to myself and my peers, thus making me want nothing more than to graduate asap. It shouldn't make a difference now that I've moved on to an excellent school that I love, but I fear for the future generations. Despite being ipad kids, they deserve to have a good education as a youth and to have proper support. They deserve to have role models that make them want to follow in their footsteps in the future. They deserve to understand every math lesson in the way I never really did. Even if they don't understand that lesson, they should feel comfortable enough to go to the teachers on their own time and seek help. Bad things out of the way (I haven't mentioned all of them but this should be enough), I did love the friends that I found there. The school community is small, which is both a blessing and a curse. Blessing being that you get more individualized attention (if at all) and you're more likely to be friends with your entire class, curse being that if you have drama (trust me, all sixth graders will get into drama) then you can't have anybody to turn to if you have a horrible falling-out or if everybody just hates you. The last part is kind of your problem. I was lucky that I had friends to confide in and ones that were very close to me. Despite having to part with some of them, I'd say that they were the good things that happened to me in my years of going to this school. If you didn't read the whole thing, here's the summary of what I just wrote. Don't send your kid here. Even if you live close by, you might as well send them to Sierramont. If you really want to go to a private school that bad, send them to SJB or something.

Some professional areas I love about the school are the academics, the social skills and manners that my daughter learns daily. She comes home singing and is overall happy. The YMCA childcare program at Booksin has a great team of teachers who care for their students and…read moretheir safety. They are trained and supervised by a select group of professional childcare directors who are hired by the South Valley YMCA (which manages the Childcare programs in San Jose Unified District). They are also required to take CPR and First Aid training courses in case of emergencies. While their childcare program is a little bit pricey compared to its competitors (Engenius, Kingdom Crew, etc), the benefits with the YMCA are worth it because the teachers help the kids have fun while learning about honesty, responsibility, caring for others, and how to solve conflicts between each other. They also offer financial assistance for those who need it (check with South Valley or the website). It also has a good learning curriculum and a variety of summer programs, which kids can enjoy. Of course during the mid-pandemic, the teachers will make sure to wipe down the classrooms throughly as well as the materials and toys. Right now, they are required to teach kids how to wash their hands properly. Overall, I definitely recommend the Booksin community to register their kids with the YMCA After School Childcare program and the Summer programs.

We were lucky that for the first 3 years of our daughters life, we could rely on grandparents for complete childcare. When going to work, our minds were at ease knowing she had excellent care and attention at home. The downside was that at 3 years old, our daughter had not had much opportunity to socialize with other children or stay with an adult other than her grandparents or parents. We were of course, concerned that the transition to child care or school might be disastrous. I cannot be more satisfied with our decision to enroll our daughter at the Challenger School, Shawnee campus. We began with the summer school option, enrolling her in a half day program, 5 days a week when she was 3 years and a few months old. This was the perfect transition for a child who had no experience staying with other adults outside of family. Her cognitive, social, and emotional progress was visible immediately. That Fall, we enrolled her in a full day program in the 3 year old class. A year later, and we are still so happy with our experience. Our daughter will be enrolled in the 4 year old program for the 17-18 school year. While the curriculum and academic expectations are indeed rigorous, the staff is so incredibly loving, caring, and nurturing. The instruction is given in a way that engages the students through music and art. The children genuinely have fun while they learn and appreciate the structure and routine. We are always impressed with the work our daughter brings home. She is only 4 and can print her name, blend letters to phonetically read and write 3-4 letter words, add and subtract numbers, and so much more. Her experience is not unique as most if not all the students in her class can do the same. On top of this, every staff member from the administration, security guards, secretarial staff and teachers are excellent. I feel as though I am leaving my child with family. This is an incredibly important feature to me as I need to feel as though I am leaving my daughter in loving and capable hands when I drop her off to go to work. We have bonded with a number of parents from her class and get together for the kids birthday parties and other social events. I cannot imagine a better place for our child. However I do like Mrs Bamber, she's very supportive bc she helped my child get better grades. Although fifth grade is the hardest grade because of the biggest jump in curriculum. The turnover among teachers and headmasters are high at this campus. Don't know if it's the same for other campuses. It's upsetting when you're getting new teachers who aren't experienced in teaching. Honestly Challenger also preps you to be concerned when transferring schools because Shawnee is so small it will be easy to get lost in other campuses and like I hate this school. But they give you gold for completing PreK to eighth grade so I like that
