I came here on a Sunday. On the weekends, it's all day dinner menu and pricing. It's $16.99 for lunch and $26.99 for dinner. Kings Sushi is the only AYCE sushi restaurant and it has two locations, this location and one in West Ashley. When you come in, there's a claw machine and paper drawings by past customers lining the walls There are Japanese paintings on the wall and Japanese umbrellas lining the ceiling. Unfortunately, the only good aspect of our dining experience was the service. The waitress was nice greeted us and asked if we had any questions and checked on us periodically. The food came out quickly. The food is very subpar. For the sushi appetizers, they give only a little sashimi and mostly filler with cucumbers and salad. Some of the fried appetizers were acceptable, like the dried shui mai and spring roll. I wouldn't recommend the calamari or gyoza dumpling. The salmon bowl was okay, but definitely pass on the tuna martini and sashimi salad. The sushi rolls weren't good at all. They gave thin slices of fish and padded the rolls with plenty of rice. The spider roll (fried crab) which is a sushi roll staple was hard and inedible. The shrimp fried rice was decent. Of note, if you want sashimi (no rice), it's an extra 75 cents per piece. There's a term in the popular vernacular nowadays called "mid." In this review I'll give facts to help bolster the understanding of the term but I got a feeling most won't need it. Located in a safe although sometimes difficult area to access (depending on the time of day), Kings Sushi is an extremely clean and safe restaurant to enjoy some Asian favorites. While the focus is on sushi, they do have other items like Habachi in case that scratch needs to be itched. For me I like the fire and knife twirling theatrics in front of me so I'll be abstaining from trying anything other than sushi and appetizers. First up are the fried spring rolls which I love so forgive my irritation when I got two Energizer battery sized rolls as I was expecting something more substantial. The flavors were average but fried perfectly however I felt like I had a fast one pulled on me so I was a little angry. As for the shrimp "tempura" skip this b/c it wasn't tempura at all but dinky, unflavored fried shrimp. I'm never happy when a restaurant takes a short cut and rather than making the proper tempura batter (ice cold and smooth) but deep fries the ingredients. Finally, the seaweed salad was another let down. The texture was on the money but it had an abundance of what I would describe as "sugar water" with little punch of rice wine vinegar and literally zero sesame oil. They completely missed the balance. Let's get to the star of the show, shall we? First up, the palate cleanser ie ginger was missing for my three rolls, which I like to eat between switching rolls to clean the mouth so new flavors can be fully experienced. I'm starting to get the feeling the attention to detail is sorely missing here, thus "mid." My first roll was the rainbow roll. From my experience as a former chef who's lived across America there's some wiggle room for the toppings. The requirement is a California roll that's topped with tuna, avocado and salmon but the last ingredient is most traditionally white fish, but then I've had shrimp, eel or whatever. Kings Sushi make theirs with tilapia and considering I hate this "semi-bottom" feeding fish therefore I wrote on the website "please substitute tilapia with white fish as I hate it." Considering they have white fish on the menu I thought it wouldn't be an issue. Well, what I got was a Rainbow roll of only tuna, salmon and avocado. This wasn't what I asked for but acceptable I suppose. Next up was the queen roll which honestly was pretty much the same as the rainbow roll but without the tuna. The rice was perfectly cooked and what I do like from their rolls is the Kani (krab) is shredded not whole. This is a very nice touch and makes for a much smoother experience. As for the fish it was as fresh as could be expected so I enjoyed the experience. My final sampling was the Hawaii roll which I wanted to try to mix things up a bit. Again, the tempura was subpar but the mango added a nice tropical sweetness that I really enjoyed. There's nothing spicy about the crab but the chefs special sauce was a nice compliment. I don't like spicy food but a little more kick would have played perfectly off the mango. To be perfectly honest the saving grace was the mango otherwise it would have been extremely boring. Kings Sushi has a very nice staff and they take care of their customers. However, I feel there's a lack of attention to detail or cutting corners. One of my biggest take-aways is the portion sizes are pretty small for the price. For comparison if one and a half rolls fill you up those equals about 3 here. The pics can speak for themselves. Now, would I go back? I review a LOT of places so there needs to be something that stands out to bring me back. Sushi King used to be decent, not great but decent. Today, it was horrible. They don't provide you with ginger and wasabi, you have to ask for it and wait to eat because it's another five mins. Everything one is sweet but when you ask for something, they forget. Restaurant was close to half full so it wasn't busy. They will miss things with regard to your order and things came out not as good, the crab ragoon. The salmon nigiri and just overall quality was horrid. I Have been to King Sushi several times and it is always fresh and delicious! All the food comes out very quickly. The staff is always kind and available for you to put in another order of whatever you like. This is not a buffet... but better! Upon being seated, you fill out a paper to pick any appetizers you want, sushi, hibachi or teriyaki. Once that is served and devoured, you can fill out another paper for more food if you wish. The price is very reasonable, especially for weekday lunch. They ask that your first order be what you know you can eat, and if you wish to order more, that is fine. They have lots of different sushi rolls to pick from- special chef's rolls and all the basic rolls too plus sushi. The sushi rolls aren't amazing but they're still good and worth what you pay for. Highly recommend the Sea Angel and Christmas rolls. The pork gyoza, pork Katsu, and shrimp shumai were SO good. Must get. The crab rangoons, seaweed salad, Kani salad, avocado salad, veggie tempura, and miso soup were also good. There's lots of room to sit inside and the service was just fine. This place has just opened on Dorchester Rd in the Oakbrook area of Summerville. It's very large on the inside, booths and tables. There were quite a few large groups there together, so they are definitely accommodating to different group sizes. They have a different way of doing all you can eat, without it being buffet style. We paid $14.99 a person, sat at a booth with a menu, some ordering forms and a pencil. Concept is, you can order anything off the menu made fresh to order for you. Menu is everything you could want from a Japanese restaurant, Soups (miso and others), salads (simple salad to seaweed salad), hibachi entree (chicken, beef, shrimp), teriyaki entree, fried rice with a meat or shrimp, special sushi rolls and simple sushi rolls. BUT they ask that you order 1-2 items at a time to reduce food waste. But don't worry, you will be full before you walk out of there. We ordered 1 side of crab rangoon and 1 side of edamame, to start with. Then my friend got the shrimp fried rice entree - this was a pretty good sized amount of shrimp fried rice. I got the spicy angel sushi roll, and it was really delicious, not too spicy and not too large or small of a roll. Next round was more shrimp fried rice for my friend and I got the hibachi shrimp entree. I really enjoyed this entree not just in taste and freshness but also the size. It isn't ginormous amounts so that you over gorge yourself or are wasteful, it's smaller amounts so you can have small meals of different things. We enjoyed the good food, interesting ordering concept and were quite full, not overstuffed, when we walked out, with minimal left on our plates. You walk in and are seated and presented with a piece of paper and pencil to order. You pick whatever you want and it's made fresh for you. We love sushi so we tried this place as it was our first time here. There's hardly any fish at all in the rolls . It's all you can eat. They have an ala carte menu as well but that will run you much more than the all you can eat. I would much rather spend a little more for quality sushi than this all you can eat veggie rolls . This was our first and definitely last visit. I'm not going to talk about the food, but an incident we experienced. My husband was yelled at by our waitress tonight- which was completely unacceptable and unprofessional. She came up to our table wearing cleaning gloves and a empty trash bag in her hand to chastise my husband for ordering a beer from a food runner. We were all shocked and my husband was very apologetic while he explained that he wasn't paying attention when he had asked for the beer. She ignored his apology to complain that he caused her to be interrupted from cleaning the bathrooms and then snapped "So do you want the beer or not?" My husband was embarrassed and felt obligated to say yes but after that we really wanted to leave. We waited for her to finish cleaning the bathrooms and watched her take out the trash. I did not ask for a manager- we all have worked in food/bev and figured she was just having a bad night and expected her to come back and apologize but that was not the case. When the waitress finally DID reappear, I asked for the check and she left to get it without a word. Also, this was happening roughly 45 minutes before they even closed (we had arrived right before 9PM and left at 9:28PM). I wish I had gotten her name, cause being purposely rude, disrespectful, and avoiding your table is NOT the way to make your tips. I hope she got that message with my $1.
