Personally, I'm a fan of small time local watering holes and I found myself at home here, engulfed in the smell of cigarettes, downing a few cold longnecks as I made company with the regulars. Yes, there are pool tables, Foosball, tvs, a touch tunes jukebox and the likes but this is a blue collar bar that functions as a place to unwind after a long day. This is about the closest bar to Lamar University for when you seriously need that drink & a good tine after class. Darts, a whole back room full of pool tables, cheap beer, $1.50 set ups of you'd prefer to bring in a bottle of your favorite liquor, & a jukebox with just about everything you could find yourself wanting to hear. You can smoke inside in the front, if you're into that, & the spacious back room is your clean air haven if you're not. They've recently been having some live shows by a few amazing local bands, so if you haven't stopped in yet to check out this awesome little dive, show nights are a great excuse to do so. I was worried that it would be too salty but it was not. An absolute balanced season burger that was smashed between two delicious buns. The fries that came with the burger had to have been fried in beef tallow. The side of fries were phenomenal just by themselves. You don't even need ketchup for these! I was absolutely blown away by how crispy they were while maintaining that perfect potato fluffiness on the inside. I try to order fries no matter where I go just to see how they throw down in that fryer. These are hands down the best fries I've had in 2025.. maybe even for the last 5 years. I can not think of a better fry and now I'm sad that I will be going back to San Francisco seeking a fry that comes close. I also want to commend the exceptional service I received here at Avenue Axe. The bartender was so sweet and friendly for taking care of us that late into the night. I will 200000% be back with a much larger party and can not wait for the next bite of that smash burger + fries.
