I'm all for independent stores, as I find that their specialist knowledge is generally more along the lines of being friendly and informative rather than rammed down your throat as can be the case when the word "commission" is passed around in bigger stores. But that said, Kings just didn't strike me as being competitive on its offerings, save for ink cartridges. As Jack points out, with that online voucher, you're likely to save on your alternative source of ink, but unless its ink you want (or some exceptionally rare paper) there's not much to draw you in here. Generally, I just use regular paper, and haven't wanted to fork out on an expensive photo printer, so get mine developed down at Jessops, so the range of pricey parchment didn't appeal. There are a couple of printers knocking about and all, and a selection of PC peripherals bolsters the stores range, but this kind of stuff is normally cheaper from other sources, and that is especially true here. So, I walked all the way across town to Kings in search of a new ink cartridge because I had seen the previous Yelp review about their discount voucher. Of course, because I was out of ink, I could not print out the voucher. I explained the paradoxical situation of needing to print out a voucher in order to buy ink when I needed to buy ink because I couldn't print, and offered to show the clerk the voucher on my Blackberry. However, he refused to honor it; it had to be printed. I explained, calmly and politely, that I had made a point of choosing to shop there specifically because of the voucher and because I wanted to patronize a local, independent business, and that if they couldn't honor the voucher, I would never patronize them again. I pointed out that they had a printer in the shop, and if they really wanted to keep my business, they could just print out the voucher for me. Still no dice. Instead, I was told, rather sanctimoniously, that I should have thought ahead and that next time it would serve me better to do so. They're right - next time I will think ahead, and I will simply order ink cartridges online, which are cheaper anyway. They've just lost my business permanently over 2 quid. It's really not the amount that mattered to me but the willingness to value my business. read more

I can see how annoying it would be to be turned away having not printed off a voucher for £2 (come on, let's try and save the trees a litle)....however. I cycled down to King's Cartridges expecting minimal service for my cartridge. I was given the options of a genuine HP cartridge, a generic cartridge and also the option to refill in the future for much cheaper. The staff member was helpful, and I overheard him selling printers to a student without so much as a hard sell. I plan to return to King's Cartridges next time. read more

Yes I have just returned from thier shop and very bemused and frustrated at thier attitude toward myself in explaining that I have had 4, yes four visits to them in being that the original refills they supposedly had filled, [WHO KNOWS TO WHAT EXTENT THEY ARE FILLED, ARE WE ALL BEING SOLD SHORT ? ], were not doing the jobs at hand. I even had my daughter and son-in-law look at it, and they both said to put new ones in and see what happens, if it prints then it's the refills. So I did paid £66, low and behold they work Weeeeeeeeee Heeeeeee on purchasing the new ones from Kings I explained to Chris the Manager that I had been in before about this and he said that they were all guaranteed ! So today I went in as I said.....the managers colleague said to me that I have my right to go to the Trading Standards, didn't want to listen to the fact that I had only purchased the refills before Christmas, they kept on saying "they are empty" , "they are empty, so what can we do" and, they needed a receipt, I except that, but come on, two refill refunds, I am not asking the earth. Anybody else out there who have been short lived on print ? They most certainly have lost my custom and I'll put it about how they treat customers, perhaps we should argue if thier machines are short changing us, IN INK !!!!!! Strange experience in this shop ... went there because it was independent rather than a chain. Phoned beforehand to check they had the ink cartridge in stock that I'd seen on their website. I asked if the price was the same in store - it wasn't, it was £10 in store, rather than £6.90 on the website, but the guy said he'd honour the website price which I thought was nice of him, so I set off for the store. On arriving there was no-one in there at all just some rather strange music playing loudly. I waited some time and after 5 minutes or so I called out hello, and the guy came through from the back talking on the phone. He ended his call and then got the ink cartridge for me but said it would be £8.50. I queried the price and he said it was the website price plus vat. I wasn't happy as vat wasn't mentioned or displayed on the website but having made a special journey to go there and needing the ink in a hurry, I paid the man and went home to install it. What a nightmare - the ink shot everywhere and stained my hands, and the prints were rubbish - totally unusable. My fault perhaps for choosing non-brand replica ink cartridge, but still bloody annoying. Did I return it? No. I had the distinct feeling an argument would ensue and I would be left feeling bad like a difficult customer, I didn't want to have to deal with that so I wrote it off as a bad buy and won't be returning to this store ever again. read more
