My home town of York is blessed with a great selection of pubs but nothing like this. I saw lots of beautiful food being served but having already eaten was unable to try any on this occasion but certainly will next time. If real ale is your bag you MUST try this place. I would also advise a trip to the White Horse opposite which is fantastic also (in its own way).On the downside, smokers are relegated to the garden and no heating is provided out there. Many other places have taken care of this with infra red heating but it is a minor grumble.

Over a 100 plus Belgian beers on offers as well as National award winning ciders and perrys. They are trying to get the kitchens up and running again which can only be a good thing. The only slight down side of this place is that to enter you have to walk the gauntlet of the filthy smokers who gather outside the only door and spread their smog. They should be encouraged by the staff not to stand at the door

As its the closest bar to my home, the Highlander is, I suppose, my 'local' and while I'm not a…read morefrequent visitor, I'm always happy to stop by for a drink or a bar meal if the mood takes me. Located on Scarboroughs Esplanade, its more popular in the Summer months when the beer garden on the front is open to catch the sun, although trade seems to be steady all year round. Theres a range of drinks on offer, as you'd expect, including occasional guest beers, and the bar meals they serve are surprisingly good - nothing out of the ordinary, but what is on offer is always tasty. The Highlander also does a carvery on Sundays for (I think) £6.99, which is, again, very nice and well worth the money. Service is quick and efficient, and always friendly. The regular patrons are human, which is a welcome change in this day and age, and for those of who who like a filthy smoke, theres a smoking deck to the rear.
