Kingman Museum is southwest Michigan's only Natural History museum. We have been a part of the Battle Creek community for over a century, beginning as one of the first Public School-owned museums and expanding to include hundreds of educational exhibits and a state of the art planetarium. Kingman's dedicated staff and volunteers offer custom programs and events for schools, churches, family gatherings, and more! Public hours are noon to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The museum is closed to the public Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, and open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays for office hours and pre-scheduled groups or special events.

History

Established in 1933.

Kingman Museum began as small collection housed in the Battle Creek Public School donated by explorer Edward Brigham. In 1933, a new building was opened on Leila Arboretum to house the newly named Kingman Museum of Natural History, with Brigham as its first director. The museum continued to acquire a vast variety of rare and educational artifacts under Brigham's direction and later under that of his son, Edward Brigham, Jr. Kingman was one of the first museums to be owned and operated by a public school system. However, in 1997 due to financial hardships, the Battle Creek Schools withdrew funding, leading the museum's doors being closed to the public in August of 2000. In September 2000, with the purpose of saving the museum and its collections, members of the Kingman Initiative formed a board of directors to govern a new organization to be called Kingman Museum, Incorporated. In February of 2003, its doors were reopened to the public.
