An interesting tour of Sanitarium artifacts and Adventist village. We were on a docent lead tour and it was informative. A few basic questions posed by us about Dr. Kellogg were met with "I don't know", but a quick Google search filled in the blanks. read more

This is a small (free) museum created by the 7th Day Adventist church in honor of John Harvey Kellogg, the brother of WK Kellogg who was the man who started the Kellogg cereal company. John Kellogg was obsessed with health and opened a sanitarium in Battle Creek with the mission of helping people get fit via good diet, exercise... and enemas. This museum has a very interesting selection of the exercise and therapeutic machines he used to treat the people at his sanitarium. You can even sit on/use a lot of them, which is unusual and very cool for a museum. However, it's a very shallow and sanitized take on the man and doesn't really go in depth on all of his beliefs (especially any of the stuff that would be considered laughable today). John Kellogg is a super interesting guy and the whole story of the Kellogg brothers is worth learning about, but this museum isn't where you'll really get that whole story. The museum is curated by the 7th Day Adventist church so that's probably why it's basically an all-positive spin on his life. It was also a little awkward when we arrived and realized we were going to being escorted around by one of the employees when we would have rather just walked around by ourselves (especially since it's a very small place). The employees were all very nice, but we didn't necessarily need a guide. There were also a bunch of facts and stats about health posted on the walls that seemed a bit dubious, and I would have liked a moment to Google them and see if they were actually correct. If you're in the Battle Creek area this is worth a visit to see the different machines and just for the strangeness of it all. I also recommend reading the Wikipedia pages for the Kelloggs or watching the movie "The Road to Wellville" to learn more about the Kellogg brothers. As for hours, the website is very confusing and they never answered the phone when we called to see if they were open, but one of the employees said they were open 7 days a week. We went at 2:30 and there were lots of people already there, so go on any afternoon and they'll probably be open. read more

Such a fascinating place. So many inventions Dr. Kellogg was famous for that we still use these days. Proven ways to help people with health problems and depression. Knowledgeable people in the museum to explain it. You have to call ahead to make appointments. Not open during Covid. Lots of interactive exhibits. We toured this museum yesterday, and loved it. Great tour guide, and our son and 12,10, and 4 year old grand children loved it. Lots of hands on activities, a movie, tours through log cabin homes, school, and the Kellogg museum. Can't believe we have lived in Kalamazoo for many years and never knew about this museum. Lots of info about inventions, cereal history, health and nutrition, and even the beginnings of the seventh day Adventist church. read more

I think that this place has a long way to go to be truly interesting to the average visitor. We were probably most disappointed that KELLOG's no longer has factory tours... and that this was about all there was to see in Battle Creek. Don't bother. read more

Went to visit a lifelong friend in Battle Creek and we went to the museum, when we went in school children were there on a field trip and were having a great time with the hands on things available to them. Our guide was a young man of about 18 who worked at the museum and was also going to college. The young man took us to first see a video about Kellog's Sanitarium which was very informational, there were lots of period medical machines there some you could try out, Kellog's old bicycle that he rode all over town hung from the ceiling. After the museum we were escorted to several of the seventh day Adventists houses, some original. Our guide was very informative and when we got to the church he played the organ for us which was a plus as no other guide played. We spent about three hours there in the small village. I very much enjoyed our time spent there and came away with a new outlook on the seventh day Adventist people, who they were and what they were about. If you are in the area make it a point to visit. read more
