Dog Mountain was one of the highlights of our recent 12-day New England road trip, and in fact, it…read morebecame our No. 2 favorite destination, and only surpassed by Acadia National Park in the No. 1 position. If you are a dog lover and/or dog owner, this is a place for you. First, you can bring your dog(s), on a leash or without, and let them run free (except in the gift shop... there, they must be on a leash)... but outside where the air is so fresh, the terrain is beyond beautiful, they can run around to their hearts' content. In addition to the breathtaking grounds, there is also an exceptional gift shop filled with all kinds of things from clothing to furniture and everything in between... all about dogs and all designed by Stephen Huneck, the creator and owner of Dog Mountain. In addition to this great gift shop is a Dog Chapel, also created by Mr. Huneck. It is a very beautiful, spiritual homage to dogs... a place where people of all faiths and walks of life can gather to reflect on the love of their dog(s)... living or departed. When I say there were THOUSANDS of post-it notes and pictures of dogs, I think I may be way off... maybe MILLIONS, plastered on all of the walls of the interior of the chapel. Truly amazing and inspiring. I felt bad because I didn't realize we could bring our own photos to affix, but maybe if we ever return, I certainly will bring some. I did, however, write a message to our dearly departed doggies in a big notebook. I couldn't help it, but I cried buckets while there. It's okay cuz I wasn't alone, to be sure. It is DEEPLY moving, and while it was very sad for us, it is also very uplifting, too, because it's a place to honor your loving dog(s). I heartily encourage you to visit whether you live locally in St. Johnsbury, in the State of Vermont, on the east coast, or from wherever you reside, if you are a dog lover, you need to go !! Such an amazing place, and one we will NEVER FORGET.

Dog mountain sits on over 100 beautiful acres overlooking the Vermont hills. The open fields, ponds and walking trails are made for dogs to explore freely and watching the dogs run across the grass with pure joy feels like a part of the art itself. You can really feel the love here. We arrived midday and I had intended to view the chapel and then take my dog hiking on the grounds, but I ended up spending so much time in the chapel that it was close to sunset by the time we left. From the outside, the chapel is simple and charming, but inside it absolutely overwhelmed me. The walls are completely covered in handwritten notes, photos, drawings, and memorials left by people honoring the dogs that they've loved and lost. I spent over an hour inside reading story after story. I smiled at the sweet memories and cried at many of the goodbyes. I sat in the pew with my sweet dog on my lap and felt the weight and beauty of how much these animals mean to us. Afterwards, and we headed back outside and met a few new dog friends. Then we headed to the gift shop and gallery. The space is full of Stephen Huneck's work, including prints and wood carvings and tons of other stuff like dog accessories, plushies and even furniture. The woman who works in the gift shop was warm and welcoming and absolutely loved the sweater that our fur baby head on. It said "Obedience School Drop-Out". She must have taken a dozen photos of it and she was giggling the whole time. It was so sweet. She was also kind enough to introduce us to Sally, the great-granddaughter of the original Sally the black lab that is the inspiration of much of Huneck's work. She was such a sweet girl and I was so excited to get a photo of our two beautiful black doggies together. (Below) It was so nice to spend time in a place that is so devoted to celebrating dogs. The love here is tangible and we really enjoyed our afternoon in this place. We picked up some treats for our dog and a few souvenirs and headed out just as the sun was setting. This is a magical place and I left feeling very grateful. Grateful for my dog, grateful to have shared in the experience of all those who who left a piece of themselves here and grateful to have had the opportunity to spend time in a place like this that honors dogs so beautifully.

The craved wood staircases, the built for the ages book coves, and the wooden floors that seem to speak. But the library has two other wonderful surprises. The up-to-date collection of books, magazines, and other publications. The locals must love this place as I, a visitor, immediately loved it. Last but not least is the Art collection. The Library itself has several well-placed paintings that blend in with the furniture and neighboring books. The separate Art collection, in a separate climate-controlled room, was a wonderful well-thought-out collection of masterpieces. As a frequent art museum visitor, especially in my hometown of Houston Texas, I was surprised to find the same artist's work here in St Johnsbury as in the art museum in the 4th largest city, especially in the U.S. The Athenarum's stated mission "is to promote life-long learning through art, literature and information services, and to preserve its National Historic Landmark building, art collection, and furnishings." Although the forecast was for rain(heavy at times) we donned our rain gear and gave it a go. Happy to report the rain, for the most part, held off and St. J is coming back. The greens were consistent, the course was in good shape yet blind shots reign supreme here. Also, the elevation drop is huge back to the clubhouse. Glad to see the new owners are addressing needs and StJ will be back on our rotation. Good bbq wings and plenty of drafts offered after our round before heading home.
