Came to the movies with my friend and all of our kids to watch the mine craft movie and were in the theater when the previews started and blew our ears out. It was SO OBNOXIOUSLY LOUD AND HURT MY EARS SO BAD. It almost felt like an evil disgruntled employee did that on purpose to mess with the customers. There is NO WAY TO that other people watching the movie would have been happy with the volume because it was painful! I have other options when it comes to going to the movies because they're all far from me, not sure if I'll consider going to this one again. The STAR Theater is still open after all these years! It has 3 screens and does have new releases. The place is crying to be updated and cleaned up. I can not guarantee you won't stick to your seat from years of corn syrup and grease buildup. This is the only theater in the area within a 45 minute drive (Other than Catamount Arts up the Street which shows independent and foreign movies) that shows mainstream Bollywood flicks. This is the movie theater of my childhood/adolesence. The thing that has always baffled me is that there is CARPET ON THE WALLS. Do they vacuum that crap? Jeez. There's probably 30+ years of dust and whoknowswhat stuck in there. Besides that bafflement, they play fairly new releases and prices are reasonable for this small town. It is more of a family-like place, so they usually don't play overly "raunchy" movies and usually 2 of the 3 screens are children's movies. read more

The small and rural nature of this theater is both its strength and weakness. Even as ticket prices have crossed well into the double digits everywhere else, they remain at $6 for a normal show and $4 for a matinee ($1 extra for 3D.) Having grown up here I probably fairly acclimated to the rather dated overall look and feel, but I don't think it's a major detriment. However the fact that there are only three screens means that they don't always get every major movie that comes out, and even if they get a movie it's unlikely to stick around for more than a couple of weeks. This is especially true in the summer. Overall, while I would never praise it as any kind of exceptional theater, it suits the area it's located in and has a smaller town charm while still maintain a good cleanliness and presentation quality standard. read more

I really wanted to give this theater 3 stars, but after some soul-searching, I think the only reason why I did was because it's the only theater around! (Is there such thing as a 'sympathy star'?). Anyway, as mentioned by previous reviewers, this place is an awesome place in that it shows relatively new films.... Comparatively speaking, however, this place really needs a scrubbing and a 'make-over'. What really irks me the most (and this is just me) is that the popcorn is ALWAYS tough and borderline chewy, hence suggesting that it is not fresh at all (Discalimer--I've only been to this theater 4 times, but everytime that was the case). Anyway, I will continue to patronize this theater only because it's the only one in St. J. But if given a better choice (cleaner, modern, better popcorn, etc.), I'd probably switch. read more

It's a pretty good local theater. The thing that bothers me is that there is no venting to get the popcorn grease smoke out of the theater.

i gave this theater four stars, because it has a good sound system, seats are comfortable, staff is friendly, and it has 3d. this theater keeps its prices down and tailors itself to small town the Star Theater at least tries to accomodate according to its size and age; whereas Newport, vt doesnt even turn the heat on. koodos to the star theater. keep up the good work. sandra, derby line read more

Ah, nostalgia. I went here for my first movie theater experience as a kid, it was my hang out spot as a teen, and now I am a weekly patron, thanks to the awesome 50% off deal they run on Tuesday night. It hasn't changed much in all those years. When you walk in, you'll find 3 arcade games you can play if you find yourself waiting in line, although there is almost never a line on Tuesday. Next you'll meet the friendly and knowledgeable staff, who are fast and efficient as they get you set up with your ticket and concessionary desires. They always remember what we want ( 2 large sprites, no ice and a large popcorn). They make their popcorn fresh, contrary to the claims of my fellow yelpers, and they proudly top it with Cabot butter, which is the real deal from our local creamery. Then you make your way in to the cozy cinemas that are well air conditioned in the summertime and heated nicely in the winter. While you wait for the movie to begin, they flash billboard ad's for other local businesses, which has helped us find lots of great new places. The sound and lighting systems are nicely done. They don't run everything that comes out, but will run most, especially if it comes out in 3D. Concessions stay open late in case you want to refill your large purchases on the way out, if you haven't already and they're always happy to answer any questions. The only thing that has changed over the years has been the cleanliness, that has improved by far from the years I spent there in my youth. They take credit and debit cards, but if you want to use an atm there is a bank across the way. read more
