When I…read morefirst started searching for marketing degrees in Birmingham I was surprised that they taught it the University College Birmingham and not Birmingham University. However, I soon learnt that where the lectures take place didn't matter as the degree was still accredited by the University. I'd say the main advantage of choosing UCB is that it's the college where young chefs learn their trade. Part of their course would allow them to run the student canteen which meant that we were spoilt daily with restaurant style food but charged student prices. One day I had a lemon chicken risotto with home-made apple crumble and custard for £2! If you live locally, you can walk in to the reception and ask to be let through to the onsite bakery where you can purchase fresh bread and cakes for 50 pence. Definitely worth popping in.

For the past month or so I've been going to the college on Wednesday's supporting a fashion design workshop. The college is actually pretty big and looks like it has a diverse number of courses. It also has a fabulous gym, for those who love exercising a lot. See that's not for me!! I'm more interested in the vending machines, where I can find my daily supply of chocolate. The fashion lab the Talent 2012 participants have been working in at the college is really nice and it has so much equipment facilities. Also, if you are wanting to study fashion at the college, then ask for a lecturer/teacher called Sally; she's amazing.

Class sizes are small and students get on well with their tutors and peers. Many of the students here are international and live in accommodation provided by the college. Some teachers also live in this accommodation and are there to offer support and guidance to those who need it. There is a great atmosphere in the college, friendly and calm. It's a great place to work and I'm sure the students feel the same. Especially as they get to lounge about over St Paul's Square on breaks!

It's a little intimidating when your walking in and there are quite a few young youths hanging outside the main entrance in a mini gang, it puts you off a bit (but I can't imagine that they have much trouble as there is a police station 50 yards away). There is a nice helpful reception area, and just a few minutes walk from the city center. It has very good transport links, is currently enrolling and having friends who have studied a few short courses here comes recommended.

When you go in you are greeted by a large reception desk which you immediately turn to first. You can't get into the college without signing in at reception and there is security standing near the door. I thought this was really good because it means no one who isn't meant to be there can just wonder in. I was treated with respect and courtesy by the reception lady (unfortunately I've forgot her name) but she was really helpful. At least this time I actually had one of the students I know say they saw some of the flyers I'd left handed out to the students as sometimes this doesn't always happen.

I highly recommend those that want to go to a secondary school to go to this one as the teachers are very inspirational and uplifting. There is also loads of fascinating trips you can go to, and reward schemes implemented for you to achieve your full potential. The dinner there is just awesome too, you will be spilt for choice! Everything will most likely be halal as the chool is like 98% of the lovely Muslim community.

The teaching staff are friendly and on the most part really approachable. Whenever I have had questions or concerns I have always felt listened to. Indeed, any small suggestions I have made have been welcomed and I feel involved in the school. I would say that if there are any areas for change it would be on improved communication about every day information and lesson content. I also feel that more formal opportunities for parental involvement might work well in the future. There are a lot of parents out there who would like to be more involved but who aren't sure how to go about it, so maybe the Wheelies PTA needs to be more prominent. Overall though, a good school that has really happy children, which I think is the most important thing in the end because if your child isn't happy, they won't learn.

I can say, hands down, that Hall Green School is the nicest I have ever worked in. Pupils are polite and respectful (well, they were when I was there) and there seemed to be a mix of able bodied and disabled pupils who all got along fine and looked out for eachother. It was like being in another world and I would have loved to have gotten a long term placement there, even though it took me forever to get there each day from the Jewellery Quarter.

Teachers and supporting staff are happy and conscientious and do whatever is possible for each pupil to achieve their best (in exams but also as a well rounded person). Exam results are amongst the best in the country. It's a school for boys from Yr7 to Yr11 and mixed in the Sixth Form. The old Moseley Art School us one of 26 listed buildings on Moseley Road - which is an impressive…read moreamount of listed buildings for one road, if you ask me... I know that it is no longer an Art School, but I have to admit, I don't have the foggiest idea what this building is used for now - if anything. It would be an awful shame for it to merely decay - in fact, as a Grade II Listed Building, is this even allowed to happen? Who's responsibility is it? Lots of question marks surrounding this building ... What I do know is that it was opened in 1900 and then closed again in 1975. It's a beautiful example of Victorian architecture - complimenting the equally controversial Moseley Baths which are directly opposite. Combining red brick with stone columns, large windows and fancy gates, it was probably a lovely place to study art. But for now - who knows?...
