White Hart Thatched Inn & Brewery - TV Presenter Sue Powell-Reed with the owners of The White Hart

White Hart Thatched Inn & Brewery

This pub first came to my attention via a book called 1001 Great Family Pubs (Automobile…read moreAssociation). The guide book mentioned that not only was it an ancient thatched free house but had its own micro brewery too. I too am a member of CAMRA (Carmarthenshire Branch) and a beer taster/tester for the Evan Evans brewery plus a regular attendant of food and beer festivals in the area, so with that premise I decided to investigate the White Hart further via their website and a recent visit to them. The White Hart is located near to Carmarthen itself & very close to the Botanical Garden of Wales. The pub itself is a traditional 600 year old thatched cottage with thick stone walls and heavy beams plus a converted barn restaurant. The interior is very cosy and full of antiques and a large log fire. The inside is strewn with farming implements, mugs, tankards, old fashioned photos, local scenes, stag antler hat rack, a suit of armour, horse brasses, medieval/gothic looking benches & chairs, so much paraphernalia the place is a museum unto itself. There is even a tropical fish tank and a grey & pink parakeet/parrot in one passageway, but I digress. Let's start with the beer & food. The Coles family that own the pub brew several beers & ciders inc. beetroot ale, liquorice stout, nettle ale, golden ale, Merlin Stout, Cwrw Blasus (bitter), brown ale, Llandarog ale etc. (Maybe even a black lager in the future too. !). All cask beers are brewed locally, in addition to the traditional ingredients of barley, hops and yeast they use their very own water from a well 300 ft under the White Hart, it is a hard water so it gives the beer a bit of bite/substance (in a good way). You have the option at the bar of having a third of a pint beer taster too. As for food there are a range of snacks, sandwiches, bar meals, roast dinners & daytime specials. Dishes such as duck in orange sauce, swordfish, Welsh lamb chops, Black Beef steaks, cod, lava bread, various pies. On my own visit I have a lamb and apricot pie with chips and peas (really nice). Bar meals/grills are around the £10-£15 mark and the bar snacks like jacket potatoes, sandwiches are about a fiver, this may seem a little pricey but then the meal portions are large and you have local produce too. Speaking of which The Coles family have farm too and sell their local free range eggs, jams & chutneys over the bar to take away plus you can but ale gift packs too from the small shop corner of the pub which showcases the range of bottled ales. The pub also boasts a patio garden & children's play area too. The kitchen is open plan also so you can actually see your food being cooked as well. Pre-booked coaches and parties are welcome also. I found the place very welcoming, the hospitality & service was good, fairly quick being served and table cleared away regularly. The bar man does know his beer and the licensing trade inside out as I tested him with my own meagre knowledge as a CAMRA member & Evan Evans beer taster. Cannot recommend this place highly enough, it is a hidden gem and one of Wales' best kept secrets. Go and discover it for yourselves and see if you agree.

It posseses open fireplaces, and a choice of cozy tables for 2 or 4, and long tables for larger parties in the back. HRH Prince Charles, Dylan Thomas have both visited here, to sample the beer still brewed on the premesis. The food is pricey, but what a meal you get for your money! A huge plateful that would be enough for two! the most reasonable is the Roast dinners, approx £10 a head. The walls and ceilings of the Inn are covered in memorobilia, from horse brasses to farming tolls, there is enough to occupy your mind while you wait for your meal. On your way to the loo you will encounter a full suit of armour, and in the back are fish tanks, and a talking parrot!

The Ferry Inn is a very popular gastropub in an enviable position on the River Teifi. (The views…read moreare fantastic.) It has a cosy bar area, three inside eating areas with river views, two outside eating areas and a terrace to really enjoy the view. They are happy to accommodate diners with dogs (there are also dog-free areas) and it's very child-friendly (there's a children's menu, and some tables seat eight). The menu offers starters at £7.50-£7.95, mains around £18 (except fish and seafood at £24 and steak at £29), desserts at £7.50, as well as a choice of ice creams and sorbets (£3.50-£7.50). They offer a range of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. We chose Sea Bass served with Lemon Parsley Caper Butter, Herb Roasted New Potatoes, Garden Salad with Buckwheat & Broad Beans with Honey Mustard Sauce & New Leaf Microgreens (£24); and the one of the vegetarian options: Glamorgan Crumble a tower of Leeks, Carrot, Breadcrumbs & Mature Cheddar Cheese, Garlic & Herb Roasted New Potatoes, Glebelands Salad, Quinoa, Bean, Vegetable Salad & Fresh Herb White Sauce (£19.95). We followed this with Dark Cherry & Marzipan Bake Vanilla Ice Cream £7.50. Overall, the food was very good, except that the seabass was (disappointingly) over done and therefore falling apart. I always think it's a little odd serving a cold side salad on the side (or in my case underneath) a hot dish, although overall the flavours did work well together. The Glamorgan Crumble was very tasty. Service was a little manic: some staff seemed to run around all evening, and we were served by four different people during the evening. (One was very nice, two were a bit brusque.) They were busy, but we had booked (and were expecting) a table in the downstairs area with a river view, but were shown to a different part of the restaurant area. There were, however, a number of reserved tables which remained empty through the evening, so it seems like they had a few no-shows. Overall we had a nice evening: with two glasses of wine, the bill came to £75 for two, excluding service. It's firmly worth four stars, and of course you're paying for the location, but at these prices, getting the fish right and calmer service would land a five.
