The emergent curriculum is a relief is a sea of preschools where kids are forced to do worksheets, this is truly a play-based preschool. The kids spend TONS of time outside, rain or shine, and the playground is magnificent. There is a strong focus on the children learning independence, which I really appreciate. Teachers empower children to resolve issues and challenges themselves, which has given my children great skills that make them ready for Kindergarten socially. They have a lot of agency, which grows their confidence and is a good outlet for the "I do it myselfs". Plus, there is a focus on healthy living, as the Schoolhouse only serves fresh fruits and vegetables for snack! Being snack-helper is one of my kids' favorite activities. This school is a great fit for any family that wants their kids to be kids, experience true play-based learning, and spend lots of time in nature.

It's possible a lot of these parents heard the reputation of the school and just think their kids are being difficult, but buyer beware for this one. The other families are great. The parents are generally in it for the right reasons.

I first met her through her prenatal yoga classes and they quickly became my weekly highlight, especially as I progressed through my second and third trimester. I liked her style of teaching yoga and when I found out she was a doula, even though at that point I wasn't sure what a doula was or if we needed one since we were planning on a hospital birth, but she graciously and patiently answered all my questions. In the last few weeks of my pregnancy, knowing that Jess would be there for the entire labor and delivery process (and providing me with lots of great information beforehand) completely shifted my mindset about my upcoming birth. Instead of feeling anxious and afraid, I began to feel calm, prepared and even a little bit excited about the experience. When the big day arrived, she was enormously helpful with helping me through the contractions in the early phase. Although my son's birth went nowhere near what we had envisioned, she helped me tap into a well of strength I didn't know that I had. She also worked with my husband in a way that made the 3 of us feel like a team. Her information beforehand and support in the moment helped my husband and I partner with the doctors to make the best medical decisions for me and my baby. As a result of having Jess there, I felt empowered and informed and was able to advocate for what I wanted. What could have been a traumatic birth experience ultimately wasn't, and a big part of that was her presence. When I look back on the day, there are many aspects of the birth that I am proud of and were a beautiful experience. In short, I would highly recommend Jess to anyone, regardless of what kind of birth experience you want to have (hospital, birth center, home etc.)

The childbirth education course gave me a really clear picture of what to expect from my hospital birth and what some of the choices I might have to make would entail. The knowledge I gained from the class allowed me to advocate for myself effectively during labor and ask clear questions of my medical team when they made a suggestion. This allowed me to have a really positive birth experience as a first time mom! The breathing techniques covered in both the childbirth and yoga classes and the mindset work we did were also immensely helpful in managing my pain.

Dr. Whitelaw has raised the bar in terms of what to expect from piano lessons. She is SO amazing with us -- my kids have a ball with her and have grown as little pianists in just the weeks that we have been seeing her. I was a little worried about learning piano as an adult, but Dr. Whitelaw assured me that it is more common than you'd think and I feel much more comfortable knowing that she has years of experience (and a ph.D in musicology!) wow. Having her come to the home is especially convenient with our busy work/school schedule. I am SO happy she expanded to Cornelius and my neighbor is starting with her next week!

We decided to go inside and check out the public library. The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is a library that looks and feels a lot like the ones I grew up with. When you enter the checkout desk/librarian area is right in front of you. On your left is the adult area of the library. On the right is the children's section. We hung a right and went to explore the kids stuff. There were shelves and shelves of books and magazines for kids to check out. There were a few on display around the area as well. One corner contained some toys and comfy chairs. My daughter, and some other child that she met while there, grabbed the toys and arranged them for a little story time. She then brought me a dozen or so books to read to her, her "friend" and the toys. We read through each one of them. The two of us then took a walk around the rest of the kid's area. Another corner contained more comfortable seating that were portable so kids could move them to a spot of their liking. There were three or four computers lining the far wall that kids could use for various things. Stretching across the front of the kids area were tables and chairs that were occupied by tutors and students. Overall I felt that the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library was an a-ok place to spend a rainy afternoon. Why not more? Well, like I said, it reminded me a lot of the libraries of yesteryear. In our hometown, Tampa, we have some absolutely gorgeous libraries which not only house books and magazines and DVDs and CDs but also house tons of technology and legos and hands-on learning opportunities and museums and local art. They also put on performances and offer educational classes and spearhead recycling initiatives and basically make the library a vibrant part of the local learning community. These are gold standard libraries. The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library isn't bad, it just stands a couple notches below what I've seen a library can be at its absolute best.
