I wish I knew the following before I paid: 1. There is one indoor pool used for everything and they close it for 15 minutes every other hour. You can't even be in the pool room during that 15 minutes - you have to leave the building. It's also closed during all swim classes and homeschool swim time. 2. The kids who attend summer camp use the pool daily around lunch time so it's PACKED. Good luck finding 2 square feet to swim in. Bring ear plugs for use during this time. 3. The pool slide they advertise is only open on Sundays from 1-4pm *IF* there are 2 lifeguards available. On the Sunday we went, it didn't open until 2pm. If your child can't pass their swim assessment and must wear a life vest, s/he can't use the slide... no one could explain to me why a life vest makes use of the slide unsafe. 4. The lifeguards will get on you if you do anything but float around above the water level. Don't even think about having fun like kids do. 5. People are allowed to go into the pool in their street clothes. Gross.

My brother and sister in law decided to sign both of my nephews up for the basketball program through the Lincoln county YMCA and I have never witnessed such an unfair program with disrespectful leaders. To start out, the woman who was over the games CLEARLY favored certain teams over others, this allowed the teams she favored to BULLY the other players on the court with no repercussions. I've personally witnessed her almost every game I've gone to TALKING through the prayers before the games. As a representative of this establishment, she should at least remain quiet during a time of prayer to be respectful to those participating in prayer. Secondly, the team she seemed to favor over all the others was stacked with really good players that never went to tryouts. This was done purposefully so that these good players would be put on the same team. In any sport, if you don't go to tryouts, you DON'T get to play! There should be no reason for this to be allowed. Fouls would be called excessively for the teams playing against this particular team, and the same calls wouldn't be called on the stacked team. I've watched the boys on this team shove girls, with no fouls called on them. But if the girls try to defend themselves they get called out in front of the whole gym for playing too aggressive and get a whole speech about it. I truly hope that this establishment can get their stuff together so that the players can be placed equally on the teams with coaches that care so that these kids can learn the sport like their parents are PAYING for. All of this takes a toll of n the kids that are being treated unfairly. My nephews got into the car after the last game today so upset because they felt cheated out of learning more about basketball, a sport they thought they loved. Things like this cause kids to not want to play sports, lower their self esteem and can lead them down dark paths. I am so disappointed.

We spent almost a year touring preschools in Los Angeles and then almost another year getting accepted into one of the best ones, which was in extremely high demand. In Asheville, there were fewer options comparatively. We toured several schools that had been highly regarded by different friends but as soon as we went to Roots + Wings School of Art and Design and met Ginger Huebner, the founding director, we were sold. The school was not only the perfect fit for our 3 year old and our family, but after attending a semester, it easily exceeded the ridiculously hard to get into school we were excited to attend in Los Angeles. Roots + Wings is a beautiful blend of creative art driven education with just the right amount of structure, set in a truly wonderful space to learn and grow. Throughout his first semester at Roots and Wings, our son grew so much - emotionally and intellectually. By giving him a comfortable and positive space to explore art and his surroundings, he learned problem solving, interpersonal skills with other children and teachers, and became much more independent. Most importantly, he had a blast doing it all. When we picked him up from school, he was always so excited to show and tell us all the amazing things they'd done that day. The kids created incredible art projects, had animals in the classroom, played music and had plenty of outdoor time. Our teachers were incredible - it's clear that Ginger is very careful when selecting who will be working at her school. The classrooms themselves are also beautiful. Tons of natural light fill every corner, the design and choice of every element in their classroom from the furniture to the wall colors to the flooring is spot on. Roots + Wings feels like a school you'd read about in Sweden (to be fair, the décor at Roots and Wings is Scandinavian modern). Ginger beautifully conceived our end-of-semester celebration, with all the kids artwork and projects elegantly displayed and a sweet and poignant ceremony. Overall we couldn't be happier with Roots + Wings and if you're looking for a creatively stimulating environment with just the right amount of structure for your preschool aged kids, I'm sure you'll love Roots + Wings as well. We can't wait for the next semester to start and for our other kids be old to enough to start attending!!

Where do I even start?? First of all, I don't have a choice to go here, and I've been here since…read morekindergarten and in high school right now and wanted to inform parents on why your child would miserable here or heck, they could be fine with it which is rare. Elementary wasn't all that bad except for the pointless dress code that is supposed to teach the students to "dress properly" even though they are kindergarteners and can't retain things like that and if they learn they have to dress a certain way at such a young age, they will turn out to be blobs for the rest of their time here at Lincoln Charter and perhaps beyond that. The teachers, the material, and the whole atmosphere of elementary was not too bad. And then middle school comes along, and everyone starts groaning about all the nagging and nitpicking that comes from the staff which they claim as "helping you get ready for high school" which is nothing like how high school has been so far for me. And now comes one of the most dreaded systems in the entire school: The talon system. The talon system is not just something that the bad student's hate, everyone does. The talon system is where a student has a folder called a Talon Folder where they are given a certain number of "talons" which is 10 and if they make one little screw up, one little mistake, they lose a talon and if this happens multiple times, it adds up and can turn into more severe punishments as you lose more, it's stupid. And guess what? I have someone who has made entire google doc based on Martin Luther's 95 theses that's titled "Theses on why the Talon System is Flawed" and it's great (screenshots below). The new dress code is apparently supposed to more "lax and have more freedom" which is completely absurd considering that you can wear sweatpants, but you can only wear jeans on Fridays. And you can't have any logo "bigger than a credit card" which I don't get. I saw this girl the other day who got written up for wearing jeans on a Wednesday and she had to call her mom to bring her a change of clothes and which if I was the mother I would've been P I S S E D. And you remember the nice and ready-to-help teachers from elementary school and playgrounds and enjoyment itself? Yeah, well you don't get that from here on out. Now, you're stuck with staff who act like they are a better person than you and shame you for such a little mistake which means if you aren't on your point 24/7 365, you WILL get in trouble for stupid reasons. And I hate when parents fall for the "we're just trying to help out your son/daughter" line and tell their child to be better when it's mentally hard for them to be when they are constantly put down by these teachers and staff who think they're at the top of the food chain. So yeah, middle school sucks. I could go on but I would be typing for a while. Now, the golden age of your school experience, high school. High school isn't as bad as middle school right now as far what I've mentioned especially since the dreaded dress code policy and talon system are no more! Though you still can't wear anything inappropriate obviously and if you goof up one time it's just a straight write up. But, the teachers that I've had in high school are super chill (at least most of them) and let you go at your own pace and let you do everything which makes me more at ease with the work even when there is more work than middle school. The problem though is with your grades and how if you screw up freshman year, you got a lot of ground to make up (which is at a lot of schools). Well, that's about all I got and I guarantee I missed some things regarding the Lincoln Charter experience and the pros and cons and if I think of anything else, I will add it. If this was helpful, then... great! Have a day.
