I walked in and began to browse the records. I realize quickly that they just aren't overpriced, they're criminally overpriced. I have bought my records that are in the same condition for less than half the price. I don't understand why people would shop there unless they're totally ignorant of the price of vinyl records. Yikes, what a tourist trap. I get that record stores have to charge a little more to stay in business, but everything here was way overpriced. Sure, there's a wide selection of items, but they don't really have anything rare, and the whole time you're browsing, the guy behind the counter will just be mean-mugging you like you don't belong there. I was excited to find out this place also had a video game section, but it was just as disappointing. On top of the steeply priced Game Boy shovelware, their classic PC games (Windows 95 era) were almost all either bootlegged or rotting from disk decay. I guess the moist saltwater air doesn't do physical media any favors. Honestly, I'd just avoid this place. If you have a record store back home, give them your business instead. read more

Lots of 12" vinyl in mint condition. Found a super rare 12" 1977 pressing of Bee Gees' Stayin Alive extended version original RSO Label. Sweet! Definitely worth the trip. Gentlemen behind were pretty helpful and fun to talk to. Looking forward to flying back to California and enjoy the analog version, including pops, of this wax. read more

A little rinky-dink, but they have some cool cheap stuff. Not in the best condition but it's worth digging through you might find something cool. I got an OOP Blu-ray that's worth over $100 on eBay for only $5! Be cautious, Some of the Blu-ray's are previous rentals (meaning scratches from tons of use) but not advertised as such, just the box art is shown. Staff is very nice. read more

Definitely the best vinyl record store in Myrtle beach. They have new and they have old. Their prices are super reasonable and not over priced. They have lots of choices and it's super organized the whole ambience is really nice. They have cd's, movies, vinyl records, some games, and more. Let me start by saying this is a fun store to shop in, but awful customer service/trade-in system. I recently visited this store twice with my teen daughters. We were paying customers the first time around and really enjoyed our shopping experience. We decided to bring a large box of CDs (81 to be exact) for trade in and were told we'd be contacted in a couple days with both a trade in and cash offer. After about a week we hadn't heard back, so we decided to call in and were told half of the CDs (41) we brought in were eligible for the 2 for 1 trade in, the rest would be returned to us. Well, we arrived at the store and it turns out the owner had misplaced our CDs and was unable to return the other 40 to us, yet he was also unwilling to increase the number of trade credits to compensate for his mistake. He wasn't at all concerned with customer service, or even apologetic, he pretty much just told us "too bad". I'm giving this store 2 stars because I do like the store itself, and the woman working behind the counter is lovely and tried to help us resolve this situation, but unfortunately the owner is rude and unprofessional. I get making a mistake, but that shouldn't be at the customer's expense. We would have been excellent customers to have, but sadly we won't be returning ... read more

Your classic vintage music store. Vinyls, cassettes, cds, DVDs, the whole nine yards. Swung through just to browse and walked out with a couple vinyls that I "couldn't live without". Tons of solid vinyl, new and used, past RSD stuff. It's my understanding that everything has been cleaned and tested, which is a bonus. Located just off of Broadway, keep your eyes open because it will sneak up on you. A wee bit confusing to get to with some oddly angled intersections. Just follow your GPS and you'll be well rewarded. read more

Since writing my previous review years ago, I have found other places in Myrtle Beach (and the greater Grand Strand) that offer records and other forms of media. However, Gary, Gary and Crystal are still the best on the beach. They recently celebrated their 15th year anniversary and I'd gladly wish them 15 more. This record store is the ONLY legit record store in Myrtle Beach. I've been buying records from these guys for about 6 months now. I've found some unbelievable gems digging in the $2 bins and found a couple must-have's that I paid $25-$35 dollars for. All records are cleaned sonically and priced more than fair. Last time I visited this place, they told me they were moving. I will definitely be tracking them down at the new location!! read more

Not quite sure about the negative reviews on this shop. My girlfriend and I came here while visiting my parents in Myrtle Beach, and we really liked the shop. They were a bit low on some staples (no Sabbath, Zep, Floyd, etc), but everyone's looking for that stuff so I wasn't too surprised. I came away with a Ronnie Laws I've been looking for for a while, the Plan 9 From Outer Space soundtrack, an Alan Watts reissue from Numero and some deep psych from a band called Id. My girl got a pic disc 10" from Tool. We walked away happy. In addition to the stock of new and used vinyl (including tons of 45s), they also had lots of other cool stuff. I was especially digging the old Rat Fink models they had. If you're in the area, definitely check them out. Prices were good and the guy working that day was nice and helpful. the lady at the counter asked for earrings i had picked up as she has saw them in my hand earlier, when i told her i put them back she didn't believe me and continued to accuse me of stealing them and that karma comes around and that the cops are going to get me As my friend was purchasing 40$ worth of records she still has the audacity to accuse me. I quite enjoyed this store. First, it's the only place in Myrtle Beach, so far as I know, to offer a huge, comprehensive collection of used CDs (including rarities and the like). My pursuit of such was what led me to the store, and I was not disappointed in this regard. What's more, I discovered the store to stock a diverse array of other goods and products, all of a distinctive "hobby-shop" flavor, from vintage video games to boutique memorabilia. Also, the outfit struck me as having "soul," that intangible quality that is so hard to describe yet immediately perceptible. All in all, I left Kilgor Trouts not only with a bag of good CDs, but a wonderful sense of "transportation." Rather satisfying, this. So, a big thank-you to Kilgor Trouts and the folks behind it. This place is cool, there is a decent amount of mech and the vinyl that I bought was immaculate. My low rating comes from two points, the clerk was non responsive at best, and actually rude if you asked anything. That combined with the lack of COVID awareness made me second guess what I was rating. I would not go to browse for very long.. what a shame, in 2021 customer service is really important. read more

Visiting Myrtle Beach and had to make a stop at the closest record shop. Nice place with lots to pick through. Very large selection of used was, though not much on the new release side. Prices were a bit on the high side, but I suppose when you're the only gig in town you can mark the prices up a bit. Overall, nice place and I got my vinyl fix 10 hours away from home. I LOVE THIS PLACE! Been coming here for 3 years, 3 times a week and have become a regular to this place. Amazing records and memorabilia for less than market value and other places in my area. Always willing to give a discount and their sale days are great too! I don't know how some people find them unfriendly, every time I come here the owner is always so nice to me! I really do not understand the one 1 star review this record shop received. I could not spot a bootleg anywhere in this place, and the guy behind the counter was really cool. In fact, I walked in and the guy stated that everything used was 25% off in the store. First off, there is a lot of older 70s and 80s rock here, and a really swell soul/R&B section. They have everything organized pretty nicely, with recent used arrivals nearest the entry to the store. The prices were about 20% higher than I an used to seeing for older 70s and 80s LPs, but pulling them out to look at them, all of the records I looked at were very clean, and in plastic bags. This store felt like the kind of place you could stumble upon a real gem in the bins in the back of the store. Myrtle Beach is not exactly a bastion of hipsters and vinyl-heads, so I walked in hopeful I would stumble across something. I pulled some 80s new wave and a couple of disco LPs from the back in the "cheapy" bins. The real find was a Wheatus 12" single for "Teenage Dirtbag" I found in the back. The best thing? It was buy one single get one free, and I got this for free. It's worth about $35. Score! I'll check this place out each time I come back to Myrtle Beach, it's worth a visit. read more

I really enjoyed dealing with the staff & owner. I had a fairly large, varied collection of vinyl records & cassette tapes (mostly 70's & 80's). Also had player equipment. Wasn't sure how much I could get for them, but anything is better than nothing. Think Gary the owner was fair, and maybe some of my collection will make someone else happy like they entertained me when I was younger. A really welcoming store that buys and sells at fair prices and will always help you as much as it can. Returns most welcome if an item is scratched. There is always a steady flow of 'new arrivals' music LP's which are worth stopping in for after your first visit - the more collectible items are put on the store website. Ho-ly COW, do I love this place! If you're a retro enthusiast like me and prefer only authentic or compatible reproduced classic goods, than this place is the icing on the cake for you buffs! This place has everything you can think of! Every generation of video games from the original 1977 Atari 2600 all the way to the brand-new 2020 XBOX Series! Every format of audio released to consumers, from the earliest 78 Vinyl records to the latest and greatest. Every video format from Beta to Blu-Ray is also available for you to purchase! The best parts? Optical media like CDs/DVDs/Blu-Rays are cleaned during your purchase, the material sold all are in decent working or playable shape, and to top it all off, it's DIRT CHEAP! I managed to purchase the original 14-Record set of the very first release of the 45 RPM Introductory Album from 1949 for only $12! The same product in the same condition and without the original catalog, much like mine, is going for $200 on eBay! I even got an 8-Track tape of the complete "Close To You" album by the Carpenters released in 1970 for only 50 cents! Again, the same product in identical condition was valued at $4 on Discogs! This place nails it when it comes to balancing decent service, quality of goods, and easy affordability! To say I greatly enjoyed this place would be an insultingly low understatement! read more

I always check out at least one record store when traveling and Kilgore Trouts was close to our lunch stop. This is a gem of a shop with a good selection of vinyl that requires a crate diggers mentality to get the most of you visit. They have a huge selection of used cd's and videos/DVD as well. FRAUD ALERT ..... FRAUD ALERT .... These guys knowingly sell counterfeit goods. They bet on tourists buying their fakes and not realizing it until they get home, when it is not worth the time or effort to do anything about it. I went in the store while on vacation in Myrtle Beach. I purchased what they advertised in store as a mint condition copy of Contra Force for the NES. The seller went on and on about how he really did not want to sell it because it was so rare and such a fun game to play. He said just the day before he has spent 3 hours playing it. The price was not amazing at $100.00 but the game is rare and I had been looking for it, so I purchased it. When I got home and plugged the game it, it turned out to be a fake. It was not Contra Force but actually Skate or Die, a $3.00 game. Somebody, probably our good friends at Kilgour Trouts had put a Skate of Die board in a Contra Force case. It could also be a fake Contra force case, but it's hard to say. If the sales guy had not told me how he had played the game for 3 hours just the day before and it was hard for him to sell, they may have got away with ignorance of their stock, but the fact he went on and on about the game shows he dam well knew it was a fake. I tried to contract Kilgour Trouts multiple times by email and phone to get my money back and they refused to respond. This is not buyer beware, these guys are committing fraud on tourists... avoid this store. read more
