A seaweed bath was something I had been wanting to do for a long long time…read more I have been a fan of all things seaweed and have been using various seaweed based cosmetic for many a year now. So while driving through the wonderful surrounds of Killary Harbour we spot Connemara Seaweed Baths. 25 EUR for an hour. Sold! I return the next morning and enjoy an hour of wonderful hot seaweed soakage. Step 1 steam room for 10 minutes. Step 2 soakage for 50 minutes Step 3 they knock on the door to let you know an hour has passed... cold shower time! There was no hurry for my visit. The message was always "take your time, no hurry". If I am honest the décor is a bit shabby with cracks in the plaster and paintwork that could be redone, but that didn't stop me leaving feeling like a million dollars. To quote another review I saw about Connemara Seaweed Baths: Affordable luxury. Highly Recommended.

I returned the following day which was perfect timing as I heard this treatment was perfect for tired body/muscles so I timed it nicely after a 40km cycle of the Connemara Loop, I felt worthy of this and justified spending my euros :-) First stage is a steam room, you go there to open the pores then after 10 mins you head to your private seaweed bath room. They have private single bath rooms or double/couple rooms. Single ones get you a view of the amazing Killary Harbour, Double room = no view but hey, I took the Double so me and the hubby could unwind together. We relaxed in a hot steaming bath filled with fresh seaweed. The sensation is weird initially particularly if ye normally spend your time dodging seaweed when in open waters... Ha ha. After a long soak, there is a cold shower that you activate which closes the pores, the result is an hour later you feel rejuvenated, skin feels amazing and the tired muscles have been given some love! Warning; your skin can feel a little slimy afterwards and without separate changing area, the room can be hot so come wearing lose clothing, ain't no way ye slipping the skinny jeans on after it! The place itself, little rough on the edges. Could do with a lot of TLC to make it a luxurious place to visit but, for what it was and at €25... Was a bargain and so glad I went. Staff were welcoming and friendly too

I've had Indian Head Massage on back arms neck and head this was one of the first Treatment's I got in Kenkō Health and I've had this treatment done many times with holistic practitioners, in spas many places but Kenkō Health was by far the best I went in tense stressed and overall just tight in my body Anna's Treatment was from start to finish extremely professional starting with a hot cloth on my feet which it's only small but really it's so satisfying to amazing frankincense oil which she uses in all the treatments I've had so far it calmed my body and mind straight away and her repetition of the treatment on both arms and sides of my back were to a T she didn't miss so much as one movement when I left there I felt alive refreshed so calm and my back and shoulders where so relax that tight horrible feeling had just gone. I also have had hopi ear candle treatment which I have never had before and it was a treat!! But yesterday I decided to stop on my way home to go Charlestown where Kenkō Health is based in the heart of the town and got a full body massage the energy of the place as you go in is so inviting, the treatment room is beautiful with a heated treatment table loads of towels so you won't get cold, beautiful relaxing music in the background and as Anna does the treatment you feel completely at ease. Anna at Kenkō Health does a multitude of treatments which you can see in her brochure and all her certifications are on the wall for you to see She is very experienced at what she does and knowledgeable. I would give this charming and relaxing place five stars and say if your looking for something to treat yourself too that Kenkō Health is the place to go or pick up a voucher for someone and if you are traveling from to the west stop of at Kenkō Health in Charlestown you won't regret it I promise.

Twin room was pretty small with a large bathroom and entry hall. We ended up storing our luggage in the hall. The soap and shampoo dispensers were really hard to use so we were left using a small bar of soap I happened to have with me. The shower did not drain well so I had to pause halfway through my shower to allow it to catch up. There is a towel warmer but we could not find the switch to turn it on. There is an electric kettle, but it's huge and difficult to fill from the absurdly small bathroom tap. I had a seaweed bath in the spa. Very enjoyable but I had asked at booking if I should bring anything with me and was told no. So I got in the jacuzzi buck naked. Fortunately I was the only one there but when my bath was ready, the spa matron informed me I should have brought swimwear for the communal portion of the facility. I think the restaurant is their strongest element. Breakfast buffet was excellent. One could assemble a full Irish or any portion of thereof. Dinner is price fixed either 2 or 3 courses. Simpler fare can be ordered in the adjacent bar. I especially enjoyed the Chicken Supreme with apple pie and ice cream for dessert. My vegan companion enjoyed the tofu appetizer and the vegan chocolate cake with lime sorbet. The bar menu is comprehensive including a sophisticated selection of wines in any price range.

It was dark when we arrived but we could tell the hotel was an stunning and impressive old building. We checked in to our standard double room which we felt was very spacious with a good-sized bed (King perhaps?) The long drive meant we didn't explore the hotel that evening but it was up early the next morning to head down for breakfast. The dining area was separated into two buffets- one 'cold food' section with breads, hams, cheeses, cereals and pasties, and one hot 'food section' with typical fry items such as eggs, sausages, bacon and beans. I had a fry and, because I was on my holidays, treated myself to a sweet pastry to finish. (As if I needed an excuse!) It was then time to explore the grounds and to walk off the big breakfast. Barry and I headed off towards the "forest walk" trail. It was a dry but cold morning so we spent about 1 hour walking around the parkland. As part of the deal, we were welcome to a complimentary spa treatment each in the hotel's "Breaffy Spa". Barry wasn't keen on receiving one so I was lucky to have both. We could pick from three different treatments and I selected the 30 minutes Dry Float (normally €30) and the 20 minute Hydro Bath (again, costing €30). The Dry float felt like I was on a warm cosy water bed, while the Hydro Bath was a specialised bath with over 200 jets messaging from shoulders to toe. After I had both spa treatments, I joined Barry in the hotel's lesuire facilties which included a 20 metre indoor swimming pool, gym, sauna, jacuzzi and steam room. Bliss! (An really enjoyable afternoon!) We then headed back to the room to get ready to go down to the restaurant for dinner. Again, as part of the package, we were able to avail of main course each. I selected the Roast Irish beef served with potatoes and vegetables, while Barry chose the spinach and ricotta ravioli. We decided not to have a dessert (as to be honest, we thought the mains were just ok) and instead went to check out the hotel's Healy Mac bar where we had a few pints of Healy Mac's own beer. The bar has a good atmosphere so we stayed for a few hours. We enjoyed our stay at Breaffy House, particularly the pool & spa but were slightly disappointed with dinner! A nice weekend though!

We booked to stay on the island for two nights and we specifically booked because of the spa facilities. We had to book the spa separately, although this is just a booking, there's no monetary exchange pre treatment. We decided to go for back massages at £40 each! Although this seems expensive at first glance, booking a treatment gives you full use of the Spa's sauna, steam room, pool and hot tub so you can really make a day of it! On first entrance to the spa we were greeted by the lovely receptionist/masseuse she made us feel really welcome and gave us a mini tour of the spa. Going to these places for the first time can always be a wee bit awkward, especially if you don't know the procedure but she made us feel more than comfortable! We were taken to the 'relaxation room' first and although it was relaxing it could have done with a bit of TLC (there were old wooden chairs in there that made it resemble a classroom). Next up we were taken for out massages one by one. This kind of left the person waiting at a loose end. The massage itself was excellent, I felt totally relaxed after mine! As mentioned we then made use of the facilities staying for around two hours in total. This aspect of the spa was excellent and we never felt pressured to leave, probably because it was so quiet. Overall the spa was great but not perfect, it could really do with a few smaller touches to gain that extra star! Definitely give it a go if you're on the island, the pool is excellent and really well maintained!
