She keeps taking in new clients, leaving them sitting for hours, spending their entire day at the salon just to get their hair done. I came to Hair Therapy as someone who has struggled to maintain my 4B/4C hair. I arrived with my hair in its natural state under a bonnet. When it was time for the stylist to wash my hair, I removed my bonnet, and as soon as she saw my dry natural hair, she began showing visible signs of dissatisfaction as if she didn't want to do my hair or had never worked with Black hair before. This was shocking, especially since she is a Black woman herself, working in a Black-owned salon. She looked at my hair in disgust and immediately grabbed some detangler, saying she would work through it dry. I told her, "All you need to do is run some water through it and it will loosen up," but she continued huffing and puffing, clearly annoyed. Her body language made it obvious she didn't want to deal with my hair. When I asked if she was okay, she said she was fine but moments later, without any explanation, she walked out of the room and went to the front of the salon like she was about to pass out or cause a scene just to avoid finishing my hair. The situation felt disgusting and discriminatory. I was left sitting there with my neck tilted back in the wash bowl, starting to cramp, until another stylist came over to finish washing my hair. When I asked what was wrong with the first stylist, she brushed it off like it was nothing. I've never felt so uncomfortable in a place that was supposed to be welcoming to someone like me, as a Haitian-American woman. It was absolutely the worst salon experience I've ever had, and no woman should ever have to go through that level of unprofessionalism. The owner claims her salon is "inclusive" and "different from others," yet even during my negative experience, she bragged about how she could move to newbury street and raise her prices because people "keep complaining" about them when, honestly, for the quality of service provided, the prices are not worth it. In the end, my silk press only lasted two days. Overall, it was a terrible experience that has haunted me since.

She just closed down her own business for commuting reasons and her experience shows. She gave me the express Keratin treatment (I think they called it a Keratin Blowout) - for about $120 - which has made my thick, frizzy hair SO much more manageable and smooth during this horrible heat and humidity. She also gave me a nice haircut, taking out a lot of the weight in my thick, thick hair and giving me some nice layers. The salon is a little hard to find (on the second floor above the Indian restaurant) but is stylish and comfortable. The prices were really reasonable. I'm not naming the stylist because she is genuinely kind and gives great haircuts. But she talks a lot during appointments and seems to lose track of time, and I believe that's exactly what happened here. There was no timer used, and my hair was washed out in sections, far too late. From the beginning, I made it very clear that avoiding damage was my top concern. I even said I'd rather tone darker and use less bleach if needed -- and that was totally ignored. After the rinse, I parted my hair for the cut and immediately noticed stringy, broken strands. I panicked and expressed my concern, but was told this was "normal," which I know from past experience it is absolutely not. I continued pointing out the damage, and rather than acknowledging it, the stylist became visibly annoyed and shifted the conversation to distract me. I was devastated -- and still am. I only received a 10% discount and a take-home treatment, which I honestly don't think will help at this point. I paid $278 and was in the salon from 12 to almost 5 p.m., which is excessive, especially considering my hair isn't even that dark anymore. It had grown out to medium brown with some coppery foils left -- this shouldn't have taken that long, and it definitely shouldn't have left me with missing hair.

I called again, spoke with someone and made my appointment for a mid week, mid morning appointment. My appointment day comes, I get to the salon 20 minutes early. They seemed off guard by this, but I was always told to come early for an appointment, especially when trying a new place. I also didn't know who my appointment was with. They told me the appointment before me was late so they may take me earlier. Ok, I have a seat and enjoyed the high energy music. They busy themselves on the computer. No one else is there. 15 minutes later, Jessica introduces herself to me and we get going. I'm quickly informed that toner was not included (aok) and it was suggested that I use a processor to cover my grays for $45. I declined and she went to mixing. When she came back, she suggested doing highlights and low lights to better blend for $20. I agreed. I appreciated her advice and it was totally a great move! Jessica was friendly and personable. The phone rang a few times and she would stop what she was doing to answer it. I have never been to a salon where someone would stop working on your hair to answer the phone or to chat with a sales guy who walked in. That was just weird. Soon I was ready to cook. Jessica said they got a new steam chair that she wanted to try on me. She fiddled with it, said it was on and then went back to the computer. After a few minutes, I asked if it was on since I felt or heard nothing. Francisco came to check on it, and sure enough, it wasn't on. Once it got going, it did feel nice and I can see the steam heat did wonders. I was under it for a while, and when I started to feel drips, I asked her to come check on me.
