Watching my 3 year old jump into the deep end from the observation room.
Lauren G.

Hmm, no reviews seems like an injustice for this place. So, I was randomly driving to kill about 20 minutes and decided that I'd never really paid attention to the strip of Rt 1 between 43 and Honeygo. I usually either get off at Rt 43 or get on going north at Honeygo. Starting at Honeygo going south, Kids First Swim caught my attention on the right, so I decided to go it. I'm really glad I did because they were having a December special class - two 30 minute classes a week for 3 weeks for $55. What a steal, so I signed my daughter up. We're not through that special yet, but we've already signed her up for the next session. She's learning so much and having so much fun, she cries when class is over. Also, a pretty cool feature of having her enrolled in the class is on weekend nights from 7-9 there's family free swim. The pool area is clean and the temperature nice. The changing rooms are a decent size and pretty clean (only earning a 'pretty clean' because I'm grossed out by hair and sometimes there's noticeable hair on the floor, but this should be expected considering....but still). The bathrooms aren't fancy, but clean and functional. All in all, the December deal is what sucked me in and it worked. Now we're happy customers.

It's a great facility for the summer time since it is only open from Memorial Day until Labor Day. There's aqua Zumba and water yoga available for an extra fee if members are interested and they seem to be very popular. You can also bring your own food in, which most pools don't allow, but Jennifer doesn't sell food so that's a plus as well. One parent goes in with her and does all of the activities holding her. She just moved up to the next level, meaning the instructors will start to do more with her while we observe nearby. It's made her more comfortable and used to water. Some cons - the instructors rotate so she hasn't bonded with anyone. We also don't know anyone's names - there are 0 introductions to the instructors or other parents/kids. Also, the administrative side of things isn't the most organized. Her class was cancelled on Saturday, but then we got an email 40 min later saying it was back on and there was no one to answer the phone. The times offered aren't the most convenient either, especially for a little one with an early bedtime and naps. Wish they would offer classes on Sundays!!

Goldfish Swim School was not a good fit for our family. During our 4-year-old daughter's first (and…read moreonly) lesson at Goldfish, she was dunked underwater multiple times, which left her so upset that she refused to go back. Our 8-year-old was so uncomfortable with what he saw that he wouldn't even get in the water. The pool also felt overcrowded, with too many kids in the class for the level of attention and comfort our children needed. A few days later, we contacted the school to explain the situation and request a refund. We were told that refunds are not provided under any circumstances and that there was nothing they could do. I get that we agreed to the policy when we signed up but there should be exceptions. Goldfish may work well for some families, but it was not the right environment for our kids, and our experience left us very disappointed.

Visited Goldfish Swim School for a birthday party. Prior to arriving we filled out an online waiver…read morefor my son. Forced me to create an account, provide details about where we live and leave a phone number. The process was a bit confusing as they also asked for credit card to be on file even though we weren't purchasing anything, just trying to attend a party. Thankfully the host of the party had sent out a detailed text letting the party attendees know how to accurately fill out the form. The party itself was cool. We arrived at the allotted time and were greeted by an employee who seemed the party host. She took our gifts and we went in and mingled a bit while others arrived. Once they were ready to start, the kids were taken to the pool area, which was separated from the non swimmers and party area by a floor to ceiling glass wall that ran the length of the pool. Keeping the wet and dry separate.... brilliant idea! The host gave them instructions, lifeguards did a quick swim test and then the kids got to swim. After swimming, pizza was served, cake was served, birthday songs were sung and games were played. The host and lifeguards served the pizza, cut and served the cake and got the games started. There were ample changing areas (I believe at least nine) so that kids weren't standing around wet and waiting to change. Once the party was done the swim school provided goody bags that included a balloon, cotton candy, a coloring page and a couple trinkets. I'm not sure if during the waiver process I filled in the wrong thing but I have received at least one call since the party asking about swimming lessons. I don't love that. Goldfish Swim School hosted an excellent party. Registration was a bit tedious and it remains to be seen how much solicitation will occur post party, that's what makes this a four star instead of five star experience.

This particular center is the closest one to my house so I was sad to find that it was closed for repairs. I was watching it like a hawk! I kept checking to see when it was open and it seems like the date kept being pushed further back. But fast forward and I saw an advertisement on Facebook about joining the Dundalk swim center. Imagine my excitement! I went in for a tour a couple days ago and I was even more excited when I saw the pool in person. I was given a tour, some insight on the best times to swim, and information about future swim lessons. The staff is very friendly and they're waiting for you all to come swim! It's not a very big pool, but the secret is that not many people know it's open. So today I had it all to myself aside from a few women who were doing water aerobics. The water is nice and warm but not too warm. I swam 2,000 yd and didn't feel like it was hot. Will, the operations director/life guard, is very friendly and will answer any questions you may have. By the way, it's a 25-yard pool. The locker room is nice with plenty of lockers, bring your lock for the day. They also have one of those machines to dry out your swim gear. Overall, it's a great pool and I'm glad that it's open! I'll be back regularly!

Another customer (who witnessed the interaction) literally came up to me afterwards and said "it's not just you..." and commiserated with me. I want my daughter to continue attending these lessons because I think they're important and because her teachers are wonderful, but there is serious room for improvement in management - it can be very off putting and is a business concern.

So if you just wanted to try it out you'd have to do a full month and then pay for another month to cancel for the following month. Also, they make you sit outside the pool are and told me I'm "distracting other children" when not a single other child cared about me except my own. As well as making you pay monthly rather than per class, if your child completes a skill set or you feel your child can swim well enough based on your own observations & you don't plan to go back, they make you pay for the full month. That part just doesn't make sense to me. I definitely won't be coming back or paying for another month once our next class is completed. I also believe they teach things real slow intentionally to keep people coming back and doing barely anything in their 30 minute classes. 4 classes a month. This was definitely a bad experience, I've had better at other places and been able to pay per class.

Update: 27 July…read more Although I thought my son would be consistently able to attend the swim sessions with the manager of the school on the weekday evenings, it's become apparent that this is not going to happen. I've found it hard to get in touch with the instructors/manager to pay for my sons session and it's too much work to do as a paying customer to feel like you have to chase down someone to get a class scheduled. I'm in a few social media groups for autistic parents and one of them are affiliated in Baltimore. Many of the parents of autistic children shared the same sentiment of the Goldfish Schools that either instructors keep leaving or they cannot find instructors who are qualified with working with children with special needs. Should we all stick with one on one swimming lessons, maybe, but some special needs children learn faster in social settings to mimic their peers and also shouldn't be subjected to isolation to learn a life saving skill. Sadly we will be going to another swim school.

I too feel like it's an inviting supportive atmosphere hence our lengthy run with them, however there are a few aspects that could make it a 5 star experience. 1) Longer Classes or smaller groups per lane. With only 25 minutes of actual instruction (the last 5 is talking about each child's progress) and 4 kids per lane, each child really gets maybe 5 or 6 minutes and that's providing everyone actually gets in the pool on time AND is prepared not still adjusting goggles while everyone else waits etc. 2) Better visibility/monitoring of the changing area by staff. The staff is either all behind the counter or in the pool area so many parents will hold up inside the dressing rooms instead of going in to hear about their swimmers progress leaving the rest of us to stand in line and wait for their child to get out and come "find" the room being reserved for them. Shame on those parents! Having some staff support to alleviate that issue would go a long way!
