Walking past the Dovercourt Recreation Centre on my way home from another appointment, I decided to…read moredrop in and see if John Rapp, executive directer of Dovercourt, was in his office. Dovercourt was bursting at the seams with, as John told me, over 1,000 children and youth registered in their summer programs. It was busy! Dovercourt's fundamental goal is to make room for everyone. And, they certainly do. They has been hosting the KLEO Book Sale for many years, supporting our work with the Karen refugees in Ottawa. John reassured me that they would once again be happy to offer us space. We spoke for only a few minutes but as usual John had some interesting insight about supporting refugee. It went something like this; support for refugees is when everyone arrives with the bells and whistles, a short term parade. Community development is the work that is done for the long haul until the reigns can be handed on to those who have been helped. A special thank you to Dovercourt for helping KLEO to be here for the long haul.

I let my First Aid and CPR expire, but needed it for a job, so I had to take the whole course over…read moreagain. I chose a weekend-long course at the Red Cross on Catherine Street. It was really easy and fast to sign up for the course. There ended up being just six people in the class, so it was a nice size for the instructor to work with. She was super-nice and explained things in a way that made us understand. The classroom was great for acting out scenarios etc. It turned out that a couple of people in the class were in the same situation as me (repeating the course) and others had had some training in high school, so our instructor let us go early on a couple of days, since six hours of First Aid can be quite long! The test did not feel intimidating and our instructor was so helpful and approachable. I will definitely go back here to renew.

I'm a fan!! I am new to CF, having recently joined this gym to work more with weights, and have…read moreenjoyed the experience. The owner, Everett, has been extremely helpful, thoughtful, and teaches really well. He demonstrates the moves, and is aware of how the body works, and how folks learn. He does not sacrifice form for reps or weight and is focused on moving in healthy ways. He suggests various modifications for those who need them, and is easy to work with. He is definitely aware in the emotional/cognitive aspects of health - a trait that makes him stand out. The classes have been extremely unique, with varied exercise routines each time, and challenging to all parts of the body. The people at this gym are friendly and helpful, and easy to approach. The more experienced members help out the newer people...it's great to be welcomed in this way. This gym is clean, reliable, and low-key. There is sufficient equipment for the classes, it's neat and accessible, and there are thoughtful touches such as a pile of cloths and cleaner to use for wiping down equipment, a 'dirty cloths' pail to discard used cloths (so they are not hanging around all over the equipment), and plenty of fresh air circulating. All of these might sound like minor details, but these are things I feel and notice when I'm spending my time in a gym. Crossfit Bytown has these small touches mastered. It feels like my home in there. Finally, there is a social aspect to this gym that extends beyond its walls: Social media connections, email, and text messaging are added touch points that keep me and other members in the know, and I can opt in to whatever amount I want. I feel very supported! Nice work, CF Bytown!

What a great YMCA this one is!!! I grew up in Orleans and went to this very Y when I was a kid. I…read moreremember when the basketball courts were upstairs and there was no swimming pool. These renovations are top notch!!! The weights got a huge upgrade. The machines are brand new and there are soo many of them. They even have a play pin for little kids to play in. This is excellent for the parents who want to do a quick 45min work out while their kids are playing in the jungle gym. The pool is absolutely gorgeous. I've been to many pools, such as the goodlife on st.laurant mall, the downtown ymca, and the ray friel centre in Orleans. This pool beats all of them by a mile. The water is clean and fresh. Look at the picture I took. The pool is 20 metres in length and always as a lane to swim in. Since it is a city run facility, the price of membership is fairly good for low income families and individuals, and students. Though, the price is comparable to a Goodlife or the Athletic Club. The staff is unbelievable. They are super friendly and polite. Even higher management is an email away. The only thing that keeps this from being a 5 star review is their washrooms/changing rooms. With all the new renovations this place had, I wish they upgraded their washrooms a bit. By no means is their washrooms terrible. Maybe to have actually shower heads in their showers would be amazing. Overall, I love this YMCA and it's the one gym I'll go to in Orleans.

The gym itself has a variety of equipment and the equipment works well and is fairly up to date. They also have a room with free weights, mats and medicine balls where you can stretch and workout (if there's no class happening). I really like this ymca because the few times I've gone it hasn't been too too busy which means I got to work out on the machines that I wanted without waiting around-huge plus.
