I was told they didn't offer that until age 8, only to find out when we were there that they DO have a hip hop class for that age group, but it's for boys only. When I walked in, the owner was not very friendly. The entire establishment was completely unorganized. I called the owner shortly after leaving asking about the hip hop class, not understanding why the boys can do ballet, tap and jazz, but why my daughter couldn't join the hip hop class. I understand it is her establishment and she can do what she pleases with it. But I, personally found it very sexist. She was rude, unprofessional and dismissive. Needless to say my daughter will not be attending the dance classes.

The actors change, the games change, and funny changes. So let's be straight up honest, it is at 10:00 p.m. for a reason. They sometimes have an early show that is always family friendly. The later shows are still clean, but get a little PG-13 from time to time. Were it me, I'd leave the kids at home with grandma, and take my man out for a night of funny, in your face, comedy fun. The shows recently moved to the Midvale Performing Arts Center which has a great big stage for these comedians to play with. The teams are usually well matched in improv funny. I love that you can see the facial expression of the performers and are so close to the stage. This may not be the fanciest house in town, but there's something about being able to say you've been coming to this theater for generations and the nostalgia that comes along with the place.

There was much discussion some years ago about what to do with the building (it used to be City Hall, then was somewhat shuttered) and thanks to a large grant was turned into a theatre and offices. As a theater, it's quite adequate. The chairs were brought from a local high school auditorium that was being remodeled, so the orange and brown are not so sexy, but are not meant to be permanent. There are ongoing projects like upgrades to the sound system, and they certainly need to keep working on the lighting system. It's better than it was when the building was first re-purposed, but they're still working hard on funding a more robust setup. I've seen many shows, concerts, and other events here and it suits the purpose perfectly. You're apt to find the mayor in the audience some nights; it's just a community theater. While I'm not in love with the setup of the stage (it's not bad from the back, but starts to feel kind of high the further towards the front you sit) it's just great to have little places like this available to community groups. You can rent the theater for a modest fee, or see what shows are running there. Typically you will find community theater productions by The Midvale Arts Council, or shows produced by Pinnacle Acting Group, who do some lesser-known shows with some talented actors. Parking is limited, so you may have to park a block down at the new city hall and hoof it. Grab some food from the Taco street vendor before, and hit up Mexican food Leatherby's afterward. It runs about 400 a month, 6 hours a week, on a one-year contract. There are also incidentals like costumes, dancewear and t-shirts. There's also a mandatory tour in the summer that will run you about $1,200. My daughter knew no one when she first began but every single time I dropped her off she radiated with excitement. She never once complained about her teachers or her classmates. She made lifelong friends and her talent blossomed. She auditioned with a self tape and halfway through the year, I had her sing the same song that she auditioned with. The difference was night and day. COPA is not just an after-school party. The teachers and curriculum are demanding and the care that they take with these kids couldn't be more professional. My daughter learned so much during her year there and we would have loved to continue except that the commute was killing us. If they ever decide to put a Copa in Park City before my daughter goes to college, we would re-sign in a heartbeat!

But Quick Wits has been at it for a while and depending on who's there it can be pretty entertaining. If you'll reach back to the recesses of your mind, you'll recall that this location used to be the Comedy Circuit. It's set up just like you'd expect a comedy club turned theater would be. And sure, it's had shinier days, but they do continue to light the marquee out front and since becoming Midvale Main Street Theater a few years back it's in good repair. Parking is on the street (perhaps in back? Don't quote me on that one) and I'm a fan of old Midvale Main. It's not the hip hop happenin' place it could be, but it's a unique place to grab some laughs.
