An iconic range of macs with the most fantastic linings are by the far the best thing in the shop. However, as much as I'm tiring of cheap looking, plastic jewellery, I don't want to be snorted at EVER when I'm buying something and using up the last of my change? What did you want me to pay with? Jay Z's credit card. Would be a perfect shop if the staff weren't quite so up themselves.

I tip my beret to that. But, like Alice, there're a few things I don't like about the store. As much as I am more sympathetic towards independent designers charging a ton for their clothing, it's still unaffordable for many It's not just that I can't even stretch to buy a scarf from here...I can see a lot of people being shut out by the price tags. The clothes are elegant, gorgeous and impeccably well made, but the accessories are marred by tacky Totty Rocks logo's sewn on to the front. If there's something I loathe, it's designers brandishing their name over otherwise gorgeous clothes. All the high end fashion movers and shakers do it but no one has seemed to clock on to how hideous it looks. It reminds me of when people used to moronically scrawl their name over desks in high school. Just in case you forget where you bought it, there's the name handily written on the front for you! Like you wouldn't recall spending a frivilous amount on such a purchase. If you like it enough to pay 40 quid for it, you're going to remember where you bought it. I felt like Pretty Woman in here, when she's frogmarched out a shop in LA for looking cheap. The staff have a bit of an icy exterior that makes me petrified to ask for anything. I don't know if it would be different if I had money. If you can afford it they have some beautiful, sophsticated dresses that are modelled on the glamour eras of the 40s and 50s. I like their summer collection because it was full of free spirited whimsy. A bit like Kate Moss's range when she was into her chilled out country clothing, only arguably much better in design. But I felt like I was trespassing in a richer territory that I just can't afford. And even if you can't afford anything, you shouldn't be made to feel as though you're wasting time browsing in a store.

Especially if you want to see the volcanic plug under the castle. The best views of it are from here. It's also where you can make your way up the Vennel Steps to see the old defensive walls of the city. There are even two or three different ways that you can get to the castle from here. The Granny Green Steps are located on the west side of the square. It will take you up to Johnston Terrace where you can take another set of stairs called Castle Wynd North up to the castle. The second option is to take the Castle Wynd South path in the middle of the square which will lead into the Patrick Geddes Steps and directly to the North Steps. Another way is to walk up West Bow from the square to Victoria Street (also in Grassmarket). Take the stairway up to Victoria Terrace and then make your way up to the steps at Castle Wynd North or to the Royal Mile. You'll get a different perspective of the Grassmarket area and the castle from all angles. We visited it daily. We even passed through it on our way to Greyfriars Kirkyard via Candlemaker Row. The National Museum of Scotland is also easily accessible from here. The square in Grassmarket is the perfect meet up location. There's a lot of dark history here as well. It was one of the public execution sites that included the unsuccessful one of "Half-Hangit Maggie Dickson" in 1724. There's a bar at the square named after her. You'll also see a memorial written on the stones of the square for the last person (James Andrews) to be hanged at the gallows there on 4 February 1784. All creepiness aside, it's a very lively and active place that you'll pass through at some point. I mean, how could you not? It's an area full of beauty and history. *Updated on 5/5/2026 to correct a name.

They have a lovely selection of shoes and the whole place was decorated really tastefully. However, the shop is small and space is limited, ... shoes are therefore limited. I would be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed that there were only a few pairs of shoes out. They were lovely shoes too - heels, flats, boots - I bought a gorgeous pair of brown patent ankle boots. I also bought a really nice, unusual purple belt which I always get compliments on. It was a nice shop and has a great deal of potential, I just wish there was a greater selection. I've not been back since that first visit - partly because I had a feeling it would be the same stock and partly because I know I would spend more money if I did, but I peer in the window now and again to keep an eye out. It;s definitely worth a visit if you happen to be in the area, but don't go to any trouble.

They have an excellent range of different types of shoes and at the moment the shop is filled with sandals and wedges which range in price from about fifty pounds to eighty pounds. I bought a pair of black high heels in this store last year for £60 which I have worn a lot as they are suitable for both going to work, and going out in the evenings, so they were definitely worth the money. The shoes are of excellent quality, which is why they are a wee bit more expensive than similar shoes which you could find in the high street stores. Ooh! Ruby Shoes also sell a selection of scarves and handbags, which are made of pure leather and are completely gorgeous, but quite pricey. The staff are always friendly and don't overcrowd you when you are in the store - the perfect combination! Ooh! Ruby Shoes is the perfect little shoe shop for any girl with a shoe obsession.

Armstrong's is sprawled out in a vast space, but I quite liked being able to pick through the packed railings in here without having to travel too far! Garments are nicely ordered, well displayed (as you would expect from an Armstrong's store) and have the same fun, frilly vintage appeal. There are spangles galore, not to mention a decent selection of beaten up cowboy boots. It's worth noting that the clothes shipped off to this outlet are considerably cheaper than in Armstrong's proper, with sparkly 70s disco boob tubes coming in at a fiver! They had some nice leather jackets cheaper than I've seen elsewhere, and a good selection of clothing for guys. They had some great offers on denim shirts - if you buy a denim jacket you get one for free! The shirts were dirt cheap as it was and with denim making a big comeback this season, I can see their Lee shirts selling out faster than a speeding bullet. The staff were friendly and relaxed, going about their business while leaving me free to browse. It's a bit more laid back than Armstrong's and with more bargains. Love it!

The Rusty Zip is quite small but crammed full with garments, trinkets and accessories. I personally am a fan of their leather post man bags.My flatmate loved their shoes, which were in very good condition, and not to mention affordable, considering they were leather boots. Their cashmere jumpers are quite nice, and they have a good selection of men's clothing as well. Prices vary depending on the garment in question, and their are some true vintage pieces in here. Whether or not you would ever wear them, or if you question if vintage shops are just over-priced second-hand shops I will leave that to you. I still like the quirky finds in this shop and it's down-to-earth attitude to it's stock. (they even have 70's disco glitter boots for your Abba fever party- not just brand stuff)

They had a huge section with wooden and fabric food and I was tempted to buy a cuddly banana but seeing as I'm not under 3 I thought it was best not to as I'd probably end up wondering why I'd bought it in the first place. They also had a wooden cake stand with a wooden cake display on it, it was gorgeous! There was also a good selection of Eric Carle toys and books and as I love the Hungriest Caterpillar this was a huge plus for me. In addition the children's clothing and toys there's also a small ladies fashion section with a rail of pretty tops and dresses. In addition to this there's a little vanity table that has Paul and Joe make-up displayed on it beautifully. I also have to mention the staff who were lovely and really friendly, when I popped in it was two girls working and they couldn't have been nicer, chatting away to all the customers and making everyone feel really welcome indeed, very knowledgeable about the products and seemed to really like working here too. Definitely deserving of five stars.

My friends and I always try very hard not to ogle the shop on our walk from Scotmid to my house and vice-versa. We avert our eyes because things in there are pretty and not cheap at all. Sometimes, though, there are those rare occasions when there's something at a reasonable price. My flatmate and another friend bought me a gorgeous dress for only 15 pounds, while most dresses there are in the 40 pound price range, if not more. They also sell children's clothes. I'm not sure if this is specific to the Marchmont area (there are lots of middle-class parents in this area as well as students). The women who work there have always been really kind to me. The dress my friends bought me had a tiny fault and they sent it off to get repaired at the tailor's for me. I don't know if this was standard, but I'm just glad I didn't have to argue about it at all. I'm not a fan of confrontation, you see. So if you do have some money to spend, this is a great place to get something, as the shop advertises, bohemian and dressy.
