Their selection of baked goods is greater than other Loblaws. They also have a Starbucks inside. Their prepared foods area is also a lot nicer looking than other locations. This Loblaws is huge. There's a big Joe Fresh clothing section. They have a good cheese section. Their floral section is also good, like they have lots of flowers, not just some wilted carnations like at some smaller locations. This location reminds me a lot of the present-day Loblaws on St. Clair Avenue West at Bathurst Street in Toronto. I say present-day because most of my memories of that Loblaws are from when I was a kid and they definitely did renovations since then, because it wasn't much to look at back then, but is super nice now, lol. There is a special place in my heart for the above Toronto Loblaws, so that may contribute to why I really like this Loblaws in Barrhaven. I'm rarely in Barrhaven, but the times that I've been to this Loblaws I've scored some great sales. They have lots of marked down items (50% off) either because they are short-dated or they are discontinued or they didn't sell well. Fortunately for me, I have weird tastes, lol, so I tend to like things that don't sell well, like that wacky chip flavour no one liked, bring it on! That crazy ice cream flavour? Yum yum! And short dated? No problem! I don't like to delay gratification when it comes to food, I mean sometimes packages barely make it to my car before they are opened and my mouth is full, haha. Anyway, I like this Loblaws. If it were closer to my house, I would be there all the time. Lots of free parking in the plaza.

I already had a lot of the ingredients at home, but I was missing a few and didn't want to make the trip across town to the grocery store that was recommended to us. Barrhaven Market was closer and we were doing errands in the area that day, anyway, so we thought we'd pop in. It might've been a little overwhelming had I not had a grocery list with me! They don't have fresh produce, but there are a ton of spices, baking and other cooking supplies, canned goods and shelf-stable items, some baked goods, frozen food, fresh meats, cheeses, and even beauty supplies. There was a whole spice aisle and I was tempted to buy a bunch of things that weren't on my list, but I didn't have much time to browse and had to stick to the plan. I was able to find the mahleb (ground St. Lucie cherry pits), 7-spice, and yeast pretty easily. There was a shade thing that was covering all of the meat and cheese and my husband tried to open it, but it wouldn't give for some reason and we didn't want to break anything. It was a bit hard to see what was behind it, so I asked the only employee there for some help. He pulled up the shade really fast and immediately picked up the akawie cheese I was looking for. He asked if I needed anything else on my list, and I had another cheese on it (kashkaval), but he said they no longer have it because it wasn't very popular or selling very well. I wasn't too worried about the prices, since I was looking for convenience more than value, but everything I got was affordable. The staff member was super helpful, there's a plastic (plexiglass?) screen at the cash, and it was pretty empty in the middle of the weekday, so no issues with crowding. I'll definitely be back!

What a great little find in Barrhaven! Banaue Sari-Sari is a grocery store specializing in Filipino…read moreitems, but they have products from other Asian countries also, as well as a few African items. You can find ingredients to make Halo-Halo and Fufu in adjacent aisles. How cool is that? My husband and I were greeted by Steve, the owner, who was friendly and welcoming. He's obviously passionate about his business and asked if we had any feedback on the items he carried and said to let him know if there's something we would like to see stocked. The store carries shelf stable items, as well as refrigerated and frozen products. They have pre-packaged baked goods (e.g. pandesal and ensaymada, but no kakanin, which disappointed me a bit as I was hoping to get some sapin-sapin). They also have a small prepared foods section (e.g. pancit bihon, and a few stews I didn't recognize). They had a sign advertising empanadas, but they didn't have any the day we went :( The store is clean and while not huge, did not feel cramped. Prices are reasonable and they have a points reward system. Great place to pick up Asian grocery items, especially Filipino products, or African items, although selection is more limited. They are located in a strip mall with free parking.
