The staff is excellent, super friendly, and knowledgable. Of course the regular visits with Daina, one of the hygienists, is always great. Dear Neighbors - I had a broken molar and needed a crown to repair it. I broke it while eating a frozen Snickers candy bar. As a Vietnam War veteran, I had read about Patricia Devore's Veterans Smile Program―a nonprofit that provides low-income veterans with free dental care―in the Kane County Connects Newsletter, written by Jacob Zimmerman, Superintendent of the Kane Country Veterans Assistance Commission. That's how I found Dr. Khanna. Along with Patricia Devore and Jacob Zimmerman, Dr. Khanna is another very bright star in our universe. Out of the clear blue sky, he came along and volunteered for Smile to fix my broken tooth. I must say that I have never experienced a better, more genial dentist than Dr. Khanna. He provided me with first-class dental care. In my judgment, Dr. Khanna is a superior dentist and very much more competent and caring than all the rest I have met put together. At 73, I have met quite a few dentists through the years, never having found one that I truly trusted and felt comfortable with. Until now! Dr. Khanna is also very kind and gentle, and incredibly attentive, not to mention incredibly generous, working a full two hours on my tooth with more to come and calling me at home later that day to see if I was OK. Then I visited Smile's Web site and its Facebook page and I learned I was not the only veteran he helped on Veterans Day. I will have to ask Patricia Devore, the founder of Veterans Smile, How did she find a man like him? He is a very good man and a genuine volunteer in his community with a great, caring heart! Abraham Lincoln was a most principled, knowledgeable, ambitious, caring, and driver man, representing the very best of mankind. And, like him, their concern for veterans is astonishing to me. Lincoln wrote, while at the epicenter of the American experience, in his second Inaugural address, which is today the motto of the Veterans Administration, "...To care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow, and his orphan...," Dr. Khanna, thank you so very much for providing me with a most wonderful crown, and for volunteering to give me a deep cleaning. I really appreciate what you have done for me. My wish is for your continued success and for the very best, most prosperous life. I also wish the same for those who assist you in your volunteer and professional work. You could not have chosen a friendlier, more knowledgeable, and capable staff to complement you and your expert dental work. I have since seen my new general dentist, Dr. Linda Jin, another bright star in our community at the nonprofit Greater Family Health dental clinic in Elgin, a basic dental clinic that does not do crowns or deep cleanings, and she casually indicated that Dr. Khanna's crown was one of the prettiest, most "beautiful" crowns she had ever seen. While she prepared to fill a cavity, I told her about Dr. Khanna's gift to me, which she thought was extraordinary and wonderful, commenting that crowns are so "expensive." Then, while she was drilling, I heard her say, "It's pretty." When she took her drill out of my mouth I asked her what she meant, and she explained, "Your new crown. It's beautiful!" She was simply admiring Dr. Khanna's crown work and paying her professional respects to him and his stellar, unsurpassable achievement. Dr. Khanna, you are truly a miracle and absolutely one of the most decent human beings I have ever met. You deserve hundreds of stars for your gifts to our nation's veterans! If I am certain of one thing, I am sure that all the veterans who you have helped restore their dental health deeply appreciate your concern and the dental care you have provided them. My tooth pain started in August of 2017, and it was unbearable. I went to a general dentist who has a sterling reputation and she said I had a failing crown and that I would need a root canal and a crown replacement. After those procedures, the pain didn't go away; it just moved to a different tooth. She recommended a second root canal, which I did, and the pain moved again. No more root canals. She put me on toothpaste for sensitive teeth and told me to wait and see if it went away. Months went by when I couldn't expose my teeth to cold of any kind; if they got cold at all, the intense pain would return for hours afterward. I even went to an Oral surgeon who gave me a full head CT--a 3D map of my entire skull--and found no issues that should be causing pain whatsoever. He's the one who told me I mustn't have any more root canals. My father-in-law is a dentist, and he was researching my case this whole time. When I went to visit him around Thanksgiving, he sent me to see a friend of his who had taken some Dawson classes and focused on bite problems--basically straightening people's bites to relieve pain. He (very slightly) shaved some of my teeth to get a more balanced bite and told me to return if the pain came back. This time, the pain went away completely--for three weeks. When it returned, it was like it had never left. I called my father-in-law again, and he sent me to the Dawson website and told me to find a Dawson instructor--a dentist who teaches other dentists how to fix bite issues. That's how I ended up finding Dr. Khanna. I've been to a lot of great dentists--we've moved around over the years, and, my wife being a dentist's daughter, finding good dentists is always a top priority for her--but I've never seen equipment like Dr. Khanna uses. My first visit, he spent at least 90 minutes measuring my bite in various ways. His primary tool, at least in my case, is a T-scan (https://www.tekscan.com/dental), which measures, with amazing fidelity, exactly how much force each of my teeth feels when I bite or chew. Six months into my ordeal, Dr. Khanna's T-scan gave him the critical clue in my very first visit. He noticed that when he asked me to slide my lower jaw to the side, one of my front teeth was being hit with a lot of force. It turns out that I was smacking that tooth every time I chewed, and that force was inflaming it, which in turn made it sensitive to cold. After I left that day, I made a conscious effort to chew slowly and make sure not to slide my lower teeth into that same spot, and the pain went away completely. That situation wasn't sustainable, of course, but it was enough to let us know we were on the right track. I've now been seeing Dr. Khanna about once a month for 6 months. After my second visit, he made me a splint, which is basically a special mouthguard for people with bite position issues. This ended up being the long-term solution to my problem. I wear the splint to sleep every night, during the day I chew however I always did, and no more pain. The splint protects the sensitive tooth from grinding during the night, and helps straighten my bite to minimize impact during the day. As a bonus, my TMJ has improved immensely. The reason for the monthly visits is that he's still adjusting the splint--my bite changes, he modified the splint to adjust to it, and every visit he has to adjust a little bit less. At this point I suspect my next visit will be my last (at least for this issue). Working with Dr. Khanna has been expensive--probably about $3k so far--but worth every penny. Never once have I felt like I overpaid. First of all, he takes his time like no dentist I've ever met. If you don't have a medical mystery to solve, this may not be worth it to you, but in my case, all that time for careful study and measurement was exactly what I needed. Second, he has and maintains equipment that no normal dentist does, and if, like me, you need that equipment, you need someone like him. Third, the biggest cost was the splint, which is much more expensive than a normal mouthguard. I checked online, and Dr. Khanna's prices for the splint aren't meaningfully different from others I've found. And on top of that, I paid about that same $3k for two root canals, at least one of which I almost certainly didn't need, that I might have saved by going to Dr. Khanna in the first place. I should also mention that he's just a wonderful person. Great sense of humor. He volunteered to call my father-in-law to give him career advice. At no point have I ever felt rushed, even when I showed up 30 minutes late. Dr. Khanna's office is about 75 minutes from both my home and my office, so it costs me a lot of time to get there--but I keep doing it because at this point there's no one else I trust. read more

I have had very bad luck with dentists. I also have a lot of dental problems. I was not very trusting of dentists. Dr. Khanna and his team were very patient with me. They took the time to explain what I needed and why I needed it. They fixed problems other dentists created and did not know how to fix. They helped build my trust in dentistry again. Gina worked patiently and efficiently to get the records needed for Dr Khanna to study my case. Dr. Khanna took the time to find out what treatment would work best for me in my stage of life. He focused on all aspects of my oral health care and explained how I could get rid of my muscle and jaw pain. After a through diagnosis, he demonstrated a plan moving forward. Dr. Khanna and Gina worked together to balance my bite. Halfway through, I could tell my muscles were starting to relax. I could feel all my teeth touching at once. Hallelujah!!
