I knew it would be on the pricier side given it is in the Hunter Valley but when my partners 250g scotch fillet was placed on the table I felt bad for him. Nearly $40 for a piece of meat on a large plate with a wedge of lemon and a small gravy boat of rosemary jus. I guess I'm not accustomed to 'fine dining' servings but that is ridiculous. Now... pommes frites. $9 for a side of French fries! I didn't inquire. Were they just fancy named chips? Or were they prepared in more detail; twice fried using animal fat? They were tasty but not necessarily special. Also ordered a $9 side of heirloom carrots with labneh and dukkah. I loved the different coloured carrots and have taken a liking to labneh of late. My 8hr slow braised lamb shoulder was amazing. Once again a pricey meal but at least it was a larger serving and came with a big slice of roasted pumpkin with yoghurt. The lamb fell apart beautifully. The atmosphere was nice for dinner with low lighting and soft music. I don't know that I'd return but at least I'll be better prepared if I do.

First glance had me thinking we'd be told the same at Table 1. It is at least twice the size as the previous cafe and I think we scored the last free table. I asked the waitress if there was a wait and was told no, food is coming out regularly. We were given water and a very extensive menu. After a quick look over we agreed on a 'no repeat order' policy when we return as so many things sounded great. The type you could start at the top and work your way through. After both ordering a burger we decided to stopwatch the wait for meals. We received ours after 18mins. May I repeat, the place was packed! My American and partners wagyu burgers were large and delicious. My partner isn't a fan of sweet potato but I loved the mixture of sweet to normal chips ratio that came as a side with ranch sauce. After watching my partner very messily cut his in half I decided on eating mine as they should be eaten. Whole and two hands required! I could not fault it. Cheese never stands out to me on a burger but the American cheddar was terrific. We couldn't help notice the quick turn over and teamwork shown to clear tables ready for more customers. We watched at least 4 and each was cleared, cleaned and reset within about 30 seconds. The price came to $58 for the 2 meals and 2 drinks. I very rarely tip and often feel a little offended at the expectation when I see that jar or tray sitting so obviously at the register. I left a tip here. I'll leave it at that.

My absolute favourite dish is the Pad Prik Sod and it always has the perfect amount of flavour and spice. The Curry Puffs with Cucumber Sauce really are amazing. These puffs have definitely set me up to be a life long C.P. snob. I have such fond memories of this place - it is a great restaurant to catch up with friends and have a fantastic meal. I have been dinning at this fabulous restaurant since 1999 taking friends, work colleagues and clients to enjoy wonderful dinning tastes of this superb food. Never has anyone ever had anything short of an excellent experience. The food is always delicious & prepared superbly. The staff are excellent well mannered & attentive to all customers needs at all times. Even when extremely busy. Benjama's is an experience not to missed while you are in Darby Street Newcastle area. Do yourself a favour & go too taste the wonderful food sensation. You won't be sorry. Keith

The experience was strange…read more The hostess the morning we were there was very aggressively making sure no one took one pair of tables. I'm not sure if it was reserved or not, but every pair of diners who entered the cafe were loudly told those tables were only for parties of 4. Every interaction with the hostess was uncomfortable, as if I was getting into trouble from a headmistress. The menu has a lot of really interesting-sounding Macedonian food, but it's lost amongst an enormous list of usual suspects - like burgers. I chose avocado on toast and a hot chocolate; my dining partner chose french toast and a flat white. My hot chocolate was made cappuccino-style, with foam, and was one of the better hot chocolates I've had in Newcastle. I could see myself calling in for a hot chocolate takeaway if I lived nearby. Breakfast was disappointing, for both the price point. The smashed avocado on toast ($15) was two small pieces of ciabatta with unseasoned avocado and feta on it. It was underwhelming and overpriced for the portion size, especially comparing other cafes in Newcastle, though the avocado was fresh. The french toast ($14) was a single slice of wonder bread-style toast with maple syrup and berries in little jars. Again, it was almost funny because it was so underwhelming. Overall, the meal kind of felt thrown together, or pre-made. Overall, I wouldn't return. The food is basically home-made, in that I can easily make at the same standard at home. Breakfast needs to totally be reconsidered. The cafe is beautiful but needs atmosphere - music, happy staff. It has amazing history, and I think if they trimmed the menu down to focus on the Macedonian dishes, this cafe could be incredible.

It was a cold and windy day, so we had a heartwarming roast duck laksa and green beans with mince. The laksa was delicious and rich and the green beans spicy and fresh. Next time we'll try the house made dumplings that we saw the staff making by hand!!
