The store is fantastic! But the large parrots you keep in the small dirty cages in the back is heartbreaking! You should know better. You can find a parrot rescue group who will rehome them or let them live in the proper environment. This is not ok and is animal abuse. At least move them to the bigger cages you have and move them up front. read more

KEYES critters has everything! I went to the keys last weekend and forgot my dog food! I had the dog shampoo I had the doggie P pads and I had the water bowls, but I forgot the food! I was mortified. How could I do that to my babies? So I sought out a food store for my for babies. This is where I ended up at KEYES critters and I could not believe what they had inside this store. Once I walked through the doors. The first thing I saw were the birds talking to me next to the counter so I had to stop and show them some love first then the sweet girl came from around the corner and asked me if she could help me. I read some of these reviews and was very confused. Because the people I met there were the most friendly and helpful that they could be I brought my canine Belgian malinois in and needed help with dietary and they were the upmost helpful and friendly people as well as gave her many toys to destroy until we found one she could not. I would recommend them to everybody and will have to say they are a great pet store and I'm glad they're only a block from me. read more

This is a gem of a business right here in the Upper Keys. All staff are super helpful and knowledgeable while the owner Robbie is super invested in pleasing customers and caring for animals. He's always smiling and generous with information. Hi I shop in your store frequently and I live here and I just wanted to say that I was a little disturbed by two bunnies that we're stuck in a little tiny aquarium I don't think that is a very good environment for two little bunnies to be in a little tiny fish tank actually Cruel I'm thinking that I will not be shopping at your store Again just seeing this and I will not bring any of my family or friends and again.. very upsetting to see that. I really hope that you take it to heart to have an animal stuck in a little cage two huge snakes in a small cage is not cool either just think about if you were something would you like to be stuck in something so small. Critters of the keys couldn't have a better name. Mostly because of all of the roaches. I went in to get a dog cage, picked up what they said was the biggest cage they had, got home opened the box, and it was clearly not the biggest. So I drove back over there, and the manager found me the right cage. When I got home and opened the box, it was infested with roaches. There were at least 30-40 of them. I'm just glad I opened the box outside. To say the least, I wouldn't be shopping here again. read more

I can't ignore the state of fish systems. Previous reviewer noted the stench when entering.The fish systems here contribute to the overall unpleasant odor. Always dead and rotten fish in one of the 3 systems. Not just one or two bodies....days worth! Unacceptable!! Feeder goldfish on the bottom of central system..... really? Cold water fish on same system as tropical fish. Come on man!! Systems need more consistent water changes and attention.! We no longer shop here because of this. read more

The animals are kept in tight living quarters together. I purchased a rat from here that was dead within a week. I had gotten him home and noticed that he was breathing pretty strange. They also give misinformation as well. I was told when I came back for my second rat, that if I wanted my pet to bond with me, I would need to just keep 1 rat instead of buying him a companion. Everyone that has ever raised rats knows that they are very social animals and will go into a deep depression if they do not have a company of their kind. read more

Our favorite vacation spot is key largo and we were so glad to stumble upon Keys Kritters just to check out a new pet store! Our favorite hobby in NC is designing and caring for our fish tanks so we always love to see new and different options! The owner was very friendly and gave us lots of magazines to check out new designs and showed us around the store and taught us about lots of new and different animals and products we aren't familiar with. You people who are complaining about the size of the store and the aesthetics, Get Over It! This is a home town pet store; What do you expect? When I was growing up I visited in pet stores and spent a good deal of time there. This store is a great example of a real pet store. What do you expect when there are all kinds of animals, rodents, lizards, fish involved that have to be fed and cared for. Yes, there will be smells and sometimes bugs crawling around. If you want a high class sterile designer store go to Manhattan next to the Gucci store and pay their prices. Keys Kritters is a great local store with great staff. Get off your high horses and use some common sense. BTW: When you have an issue why not speak to the owner in person? Too much trouble? You might get a reasonable answer! read more

Absolutely horrendous small animal care. The cages were caked in layers of poop and wet bedding. They had a hairless guinea pig that was labeled as a breeding experiment that wasn't for sale. They had 8-10 syrian hamsters in a small 10 gallon tank. There were NO chew toys, NO wheels, NO enrichment in any of the tanks. All they had to do was take turns chewing on the water bottle. The gerbils all looked greasy or wet. Only giving two stars because the employees were pleasant. read more

Small shop with a decent selection. It always feels dirty though. On one occasion I bought dog treats that smelled as if they had gone rancid. This may have been the manufacturers fault but when I returned them the employee was annoyed and ripped open 3 other bags to show me they all smelled the same as if that somehow meant that there was nothing wrong with all of them. I had bought these treats before and bought them after this incident elsewhere and know what they are supposed to smell like. They gave me another bag but I still was not happy and because of the employees attitude I did not speak up for myself (my fault). I have bought lots of other treats and kibble there with no problem so this may have been an isolated incident but I did not appreciate how they handled it. Aside from that incident I generally do not find it to be an enjoyable place to shop. It is cramped and impossible not to hear the small town gossip or political commentary that goes on in there. If I need something in a hurry I go here and they often have what I need including a good selection of the 'better' dog food options. The prices are more or less MSRP which is fair but given the store atmosphere I prefer to shop online and pay less. As with most keys small businesses their store hours are not good for people with jobs. I get that these small businesses can't afford to stay open late but as much as I want to support local business I often can't get there during store hours. read more

What an amazing fish selection! They have at least a hundred tanks and all the exotics. I have never seen an unhealthy fish in there and when the kids to art class a few doors down I love to come in and peruse the fishes! The dog and cat toy selection is something to behold. I was actually not aware there were so many choices. The staff is friendly and they always greet you when you walk in, which to me, means everything. I always feel welcome and when you go over to look at an animal a friendly staff member soon comes up and asks if you would like to hold the creature and/or tell you all about it. It certainly doesn't seem dirty to me and always smells pleasant when you walk in, which is really saying something down here where most buildings have that essence of mildew in them. They take good care of the place and make it a nice atmosphere. My dog has skin allergies and they were A LOT more helpful than the vet was and didn't experiment with my pocket book. I love this local family owned business. They carry great products for my golden retriever. The people are super nice. Every year they do a Christmas party for the animals to benefit charities. I recently moved to Key Largo I found that this is the only pet store available in my area. I've been in a few times and purchase some items for my new puppy. He is a miniature schnauzer 8 weeks old.the prices were kind of high I did not mind since I didn't have to drive out of my way and the staff seem friendly. After purchasing a bag of Blue Buffalo puppy for small breed puppies and feeding it to my miniature schnauzer he became extremely ill vomiting diarrhea Tremors and could not hold his pee. I slowly transitioned my puppy from the food that was given to me by the breeder to the Blue Buffalo over a period of three days first day a tiny bit of vomiting I thought that was normal because I was changing his food. Day two loose stool by end of day very bad diarrhea. Morning 3 my puppy was lethargic shivering all over vomiting and trying to diarrhea but nothing would come out he was extremely ill and had to be taken to the vet. I called the pet store and spoke with the owner asking if I could return the bag of dog food. A simple no a bag cannot be returned after it's open would have worked but instead he insisted that my puppy had eaten an iguana or something. Insisting that there's nothing wrong with the dog food. Funny as soon as I quit feeding it to my puppy he was better by the next morning. And after reviewing Blue Buffalo online there are thousands of the same complaints. Owner of the pet store said those are all lies. So I guess my veterinarian is a liar -? Either way I will never go here again they will not get another dime of my money and I will make sure everyone that I speak to know that they are promoting a dog food that makes animals extremely sick just look at the reviews for Blue Buffalo. I guess they're all just lies as well! read more

If I could give a worse score, I most certainly would. I grew up in the keys and have unfortunately had to deal with this pet store many times. From the over priced merchandise to the sexually assaulting owner. I used to drive an hour out of my way to avoid him. Recently I bought at least a dozen fish to add to a tank that I've had for at least 6 years. Healthy fish, great water quality, I can't even tell you the last time I had a fish die. I purchased fish from this establishment on Tuesday. By Friday night my fish started looking and acting weird. Saturday morning the fish I've had the longest, my beloved, original clown Loach died. Then there was a slew of deaths to follow. The slime coat on all of my fish is severely damaged. I'm watching them die one by one and there is nothing I can do. Of course I'm not a total idiot, I check my water quality. As I said, I've had this tank for at least 5 years. I was very upset, so I called to talk to the owner. He was incredibly, unbelievably rude. Took absolutely no responsibility, no condolences, no refund, no exchange. He just kept repeating the same thing over and over. Don't ever waste your time, money, or animal's welfare by visiting this terrible excuse for a pet store. What a incredibly horrible experience and a pathetic piece of scum they call the owner. read more

I've been going to Keys Kritters for almost 9 years. I've bought fish, birds, and more. I can't believe any of the terrible reviews here...dead fish, sick pets, etc.?? I've not seen it in 9 years in visiting at least once a week. I'm sure negative incidents happen at any pet shop, but its definitely not a regular thing at Keys Kritters. The staff...all the staff is amazing. The store is amazing. They do have a great selection of kritters, pet food, and supplies for a store their size. Their fish and coral selection is amazing. The corals and fish are among the best I've ever seen. Robby, the store owner, has been in the pet store business since he was a boy (his dad sold to pet stores). He frequently offers good, free advice, and when I've ignored it, I've sometimes paid the price. His staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Most of them have been with him for years, and that says something. Many high schoolers worked at Robby's for years before they went off to college and began their lifetime love of saltwater tanks because of their work. If anyone is not giving Keys Kritters five stars they either showed up and saw a one-time bad event or just haven't visited enough pet stores. The Keys is lucky to have Keys Kritters for decades and I hope we continue to have it for decades. read more

Came into the store just to look around at the reptiles. Saw the crested geckos in a small tank. The pair were hatchlings. The male had gotten the female gravid. The tank was absolutely horrible. Bought the animals so they wouldn't die in these conditions. Took less than an hour to clean something that they obviously had never done. The substrate was dry as a rock and they were eating dried baby food. Found hordes of spiders and dead bugs in their tank. Overall, they had a hatchling pair have an incest gecko, gave them no food, never cleaned their tank, and left multiple layers of stuck shed on them. Never go to this store. You will come out with a pet that you're trying to keep alive. The two geckos are extremely loving and could have been well kept with less than an hour of work. read more

Just a heads up for Keys Kritters customers. I had an amazing retractable leash for years. I recently purchased another one (not from Keys Kritters) & it broke after the 4th use even though my pet is 65lbs & the strength of the leash is for 110 lbs. The other business allowed me to return the defective leash. I asked Keys Kritters about their return policy before I made the purchase of a leash I was interested in. I was informed that it must be in the package, unused. I asked if I could return it if it turned out to be defective, like I had with the leash purchased else where. I was informed I could not. I did state, you know you would have sold this right now if you had a return policy that would allow me to bring back a defective item. I was informed they would rather not sell it to me if I plan on returning it anyway... Only planned on returning it if it was broken. So I left my other items at the counter & walked out. Yes, I do think I have the right to return a defective item & I do KNOW that the vendor will allow returns. Typical Keys crappy customer service, thinking you have a monopoly on everything. These pets are our children. I wouldn't have my child in a defective car seat. I am lucky to have the internet where I can purchase products with return policies. Better prices too! read more
