    My last jar...
    Mike O.

When on vacation, did you ever wish you could take something back with you to experience at home and remember a certain pleasure? Well, in my annual trips to Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the item to bring back would be a jar of Keweenaw Kitchen's Triple Berry Jam. As I recently opened up the last jar from last summer's trip, it got me thinking. In Chicago, it seems people have no knowledge of the UP, so let me explain Keweenaw to everyone. Look at a map of Michigan and you'll see the UP is like a hand, palm side up. The Keweenaw peninsula is the thumb. It's a beautiful and scenic, sparsely populated terrain, lush with wild berries growing in endless miles of forest. Along the way, there's several jam shops like the monks at Jampot in Eagle Harbor or "The Thimbleberry Jam Lady". But in this economically depressed region, I doubt locals will ever spend $10-12 for a jar of jam. These are your touristy jam shops. Keweenaw Kitchen sells their jams in UP grocery stores and throughout northeast WI. I find it every year at the Ace Hardware in Iron River right near the entrance, so I know it must be a local favorite. And for about $4 a jar, it compares to the premium national brands in price. However, the comparisons end there. Made by the Yoder & Byler families of Baraga, the jam has no artificial colors, flavors, corn syrup or additives. Just the fruit or berries, sugar and pectin. The labels resemble a home-made, handwritten design that separates them from the mass-produced jams instantly. Besides triple berry, they have raspberry, strawberry rhubarb and a few other flavors I still haven't tried. Opening up the jar with a fresh pop and skimming a tiny scoop off the top, smooth and undisturbed, is a taste of pure heaven. Once more, I remember the dusty dirt roads by our cabin, the sun coming up over the trees in the morning and the sound of the loon on the lake. The raspberry and blackberry bushes will be in bloom once again...

Just opened a new jar of jelly I got in twin harbors mn and it had mold on it. Hope the other I gave as a present didn't have mold on it.

Save your money on their jams/jelly! They using too much pectin (?) and the result is like paste!! Too thick and glue like. Ugh!

I love the raspberry jam, and my kids down state love the triple berry and raspberry too. Where else to purchase but Kens in Indian River?

The Jampot was on my UP bucket list of places to visit and that came true today!…read more The Jampot is a bakery run by a community of Byzantine Catholic monks, known as the Society of Saint John. They are famous for their homemade jams, jellies, baked goods, and fruitcakes, which are sold under the name "Poorrock Abbey". The Jampot started in 1986 as a way for the monks to support their monastery, Holy Transfiguration Skete. Fun fact... the individuals that started the monastery had a black Great Dane. After a short wait, we were able to purchase a handful of goodies. Thimbleberry jelly is out of stock until late July but lots of other options were available. For jellies, I picked up a jar of rosehips jelly and sugarless wild blueberry jelly. For snacks, we purchased a carrot cake muffin, chocolate chip muffin, cinnamon sourdough bread, and a cream cheese muffin which was warm out of the oven. We purchased a couple of drinks too - cold pressed blueberry juice and cold brew illy coffee. The cream cheese muffin was my favorite! It was a combination of pound cake and cream cheese with hints of pineapple. How can you go wrong? Plus it was warm! The best! I really enjoyed the carrot cake too. It was full of nuts, raisins, and carrots. Very hearty, just the way I like carrot cake. There is parking, picnic tables, and a dog run on site. No bathrooms. Closed restrooms are 1.6 miles away. The monks were so friendly! Great place to stop in you're in the Cooper Harbor area. Just check the hours to make sure they are open.

The little shop inside has a video that explains the process (flooding the fields, floating the cranberries to the top, collecting them, etc) and you can walk through the bog and check out the berries growing at your leisure. Inside the store it's all cranberries all the time. Cranberry salsa, cranberry jam, dried cranberries (like 8 different kinds!), baked goods, candles, decor with cranberries all over them, etc etc. Lots of samples too, so you can try a few things before you commit to buying them. In particular we really liked the salsa and the plain cranberry jam, so we bought a jar of each of those. And 4 different kinds of the dried cranberries (regular, cherry, orange and mango) which I'm looking forward to snacking on and baking with. Plus, when they're in season, (which they are right now) you can buy fresh cranberries in a variety of sizes (1lb, 5lb, and more!). I picked up a 5lb bag because cranberries freeze really well! Prices are reasonable for the lovely products. Staff person on site the day we were there was really friendly and gave us great recommendations of things to try. A fab place to stop if you're into produce and production, with tasty things to enjoy to boot!

Either the bread, the condiments, the temperature (what's with heating the sandwiches) something is always wrong. Originally I am from northern New Jersey so I am used to NYC style delis, which consistently speaking, are the best in the country. That's how sandwiches should be. Anyway, ole girl and I were doing a road trip, this place had good reviews. The sandwich was absolutely delicious and made with LOVE! I would absolutely go back, and absolutely highest recco! I certainly did not expect to find morels or lion's mane mushrooms! I got two sandwiches and a pickle from the deli. The pickle had a good snap and wasn't overly salted or spiced. It was refreshing on the trail. The sandwiches I picked out were the Gratiot River and the Brockway Mountain. I liked the Gratiot River more as the avocado gave the sandwich good moisture, while the Brockway Mountain was rather dry. They were well packaged for portability. The bulk foods section is extensive, and they have a good variety of snacks and frozen food that punches above its weight given the smaller size of the store. If you're in town, definitely stop by to pick up something new!
