We are in the process of moving back to Tucson after many years away. I had never gone to the St…read more Philip's Plaza Saturday Market in my previous residences, so we decided to check it out on a recent weekend when we were back in town finding a place to live. I am surprised to read some negative reviews for the market: there were a number of interesting vendors there. It is true that most were not food related: definitely more arts, crafts, supplements, etc. But still lots of fun shopping to do in an adorable venue. We talked to lots of nice folks. Someone else mentioned in a one star review "no coffee". I assume this means there is no longer a coffee vendor in the market (we didn't see one) but the market takes place in the same plaza where Ren Coffee is located and their coffee is amazing! We grabbed a cup from there prior to walking around the market. All in all a lovely experience: I'd be tempted to go a little later in the day next time so I could grab a margarita at Reforma after our shopping experience concludes.

We asked staff to not associate us with these individuals but they would not. We tried to ask for help. Instead the bartender cut off the AGGRESSOR and then cut us off and followed us around the establishment. It seems like Union managers/Philps plaza would work more diligently with the aggressors. However, me and my crowd was POC and it seems like they did not want us there. So they cut us off accordingly. We paid $30 each but however got cut off due to AGGRESSORS actions. The management refused to listen to our pleas - it was like we were seen as drunk POCs and not people w viable civil claims. However, the solution was to ban me and my POC friends AFTER the aggressor left. Please note the aggressor NEVER got reprimanded- only the POC girls. Don't attend this bar or plaza if you're alone as a POC girl

These are the Tohono O'Odham people, native to this area for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. 5 stars for native farm raised produce. First, to find the place, be sure to expand the map which is not very specific. When first encountered it looks like a farm implement place as many machines are stored there. It is at the first road north when going west from I-19 at the San Xavier exit toward the mission. You will see a fence on the northeast corner which can be entered from the San Xavier Mission road or after turning right on a dirt road and then right into the first gate. The store is closer to the south end of the property against the west fence. You will probably spot the plants sitting outside for sale before you see the store. (Look at the photos at the top.) The people in the store are extremely courteous (which is a Tohono O'Odham cultural trait). They will explain everything they sell, and find someone to help you if they don't know the answer. They offer fresh produce from their farms as well as native foods like mesquite flour, cholla buds. They also sell some of the grains introduced to them over 400 years ago by the Spanish. They also usually have some cookies, tortillas and bread for sale. Almost all the beans we eat came from their culture. They have been farming here for well over two thousand years and likely much longer.

I absolutely loved everything I have tried from Tucson Village Farm's outdoor midweek market…read more Today's market was the last one for the season but they will resume it on September 9th (They post updates, menu for their prepared foods as well as the produce they will be selling each week at the midweek market on their Instagram account). I don't go very often because of the lines to pay but whenever I did go I LOVED what I tried. Today I got their delicious, fluffy, fresh and garlicky focaccia which was my favorite focaccia I have bought in Tucson. I also got their baba ganoush, something I am fairly picky about since I make it myself by roasting eggplants on a fire and this one was delicious. It had a touch of spiciness to it which I really enjoyed. I also really enjoyed sampling their mulligatawny soup and enjoyed the complimentary Hibiscus- Creosote drink they served today. Produce wise it was fun to find some sweet potato leaves today and I am looking forward to using them in a West African stew. I also got some eggplant and tomatoes. They had some nice looking garlic, onions, and squash. Last time I was there was last summer and they had delicious, fun, creative prepared dishes then too like a sunflower seed, basil pesto with purslane, a refreshing curtido and a green curry. The fluffy focaccia was $5 today and the baba ganoush was $5 as well. Tucson Village Farm offers various programs to support their goal to "reconnect young people to a healthy food system, teach them how to grow and prepare fresh food, and empower them to make healthy life choices. I am a genuine fan of Tucson Village Farm. I've been to their Wednesday markets a few times, and…read morehave popped in to check out an event. It's fun to see what they are growing, and to take a peek at the farm animals. It's a relaxed and family-friendly environment, and seems well managed and cared for. I stopped into their Wednesday market this week to try their wood-fired pizza. They were also selling plant starts, beautiful veggies they had grown on site, and a variety of prepared foods made in their kitchen. They had samples of most of the prepared foods--typically, they offer a soup, focaccia bread, cookies, and dips. Everything I sampled tasted great. It seems like everything offered is vegetarian, with many options also being vegan-friendly. The market is staffed by welcoming volunteers, and many young folks. They also had a musician playing farm and food related songs, which was a nice touch. There are picnic tables available if you want to eat your prepared foods on site, in the open air while enjoying the music. They accept cash or credit cards for all of their market goods. The wood fired pizza had two veggie options on the night I visited--one option was essentially a simple cheese pizza, while the other featured sweet potatoes, chiles, and arugula. The young folks making the pizzas explained the process very clearly. It takes a while for the pizza to be prepared (they are all made to order,) but the atmosphere was very pleasant, so the wait was enjoyable. The pizza featured a soft crust that was a bit charred from the wood fire on the top, but the bottom was well cooked and not charred. The pizza had a nice, simple flavor. Overall, I really like the vibe of the Wednesday markets at TVF, and would recommend getting on their email list so you can check out their menu for the week.
